Notes: A maximization test (after Magnusson & Kligman 1970), a single injection adjuvant test (SIAT) and a modified Draize test procedure for assessing contact sensitization potential in guinea-pigs have been compared for their ability to detect 19 known human contact sensitizers. The results show that the modified Draize procedure is a good screening test particularly for strong sensitizers. The maximization procedure is a very stringent test of sensitization potential, able to detect some marginal sensitizers. The sensitivity of the SIAT procedure is sufficiently similar to that of the maximization test to act as an alternative for routine testing, particularly in view of its practical advantages over the maximization procedure.

Notes: Abstract Multiple coincidence rates have been measured using a detector system consisting of a Ge(Li) spectrometer and eight NaI(Tl) or eight liquid scintillators. Reactions induced byα-particles with energies of 51–55 MeV and 118 MeV12C ions are studied. The data are analysed to give the first and second central moments of the distribution of the number ofγ-rays feeding individual levels in the final nuclei. When these numbers are compared to spin distributions calculated with the statistical model code GROGI the relative importance of dipole and quadrupole deexcitation modes can be ascertained. In particular, in the122Te(α, 4n)122Xe reaction theγ-decay prior to the entry into the ground band is well described as a statistical process proceeding to 50% by dipole and 50% by quadrupole radiation. In the166Er(α,4n)166Yb and192Os(α,4n)192Pt reactions the relative amount of quadrupole radiation is larger and it seems that the dipole and quadrupole decay takes place via separate cascades. In the164Dy(12C, 7-8n) reactions the average multiplicity is independent of spin, suggesting that the nucleus forgets the spin of the entry state before the process enters into the ground band. In the176Yb(12C, 8n)180Os reaction, finally, the nucleus definitely retains memory of the entry state during the decay. In this last case the multiplicity measurement is combined with aγ-ray singles measurement to give an average excitation energy prior to theα-decay and the average moment of inertia characterising the decay of the high-spin states.

Notes: Summary In Pima Indians with Type 2 (insulin independent) diabetes mellitus, HLA-A2 allele frequencies were inversely associated with age, (0.72, 0.59, and 0.52 in those less than 35, 35 to 54, and 55 years old and over, respectively). This suggests that there may be a gene closely linked with the HLA-A locus which plays a role in the expression of diabetes in the Pimas by contributing to an earlier age of onset. HLA-A2 was found in 65% of 69 non-diabetic and 81% of 191 diabetic subjects (relative risk = 2.2).

Notes: Abstract The high spin level structure of the three-neutron nucleus149Gd has been investigated by in-beamγ-ray and electron spectroscopy with (α, xn) reactions. The observed levels are characterized as members of the shell model multipletsνf 7 2/3 ,νh 9/2 f 7 2/2 ,νf 7 2/3 ×3−,νh 9/2 f 7 2/2 ×3−, and tentativelyνf 7 2/3 ×(3−)2. The energies of theν f 7 2/3 states agree only moderately with those calculated using empirical two-nucleon interactions taken from148Gd, which indicates the importance of long range contributions already atN=85.

Notes: A square tensile sheet with symmetric edge cracks is analysed by the finite element method to demonstrate the accuracy obtained with polynomial elements when the mesh patterns are chosen on the basis of the element's interpolation functions. Numerical results are provided for the accuracy of the total strain energy, the stress intensity factor, and the numerical condition of the global stiffness matrix. The stress intensity factor is determined to within 1.0 per cent accuracy using quadratic (linear strain) triangular elements with only 138 degrees-of-freedom.

Notes: The main objective of the work is to explore the problem of producing polymers of any desired molecular weight distribution (MWD) in isothermal, solution, “living”, anionic polymerizations carried out in continuous tubular reactors. For this purpose, a novel control scheme was designed and implemented, which involves the periodic operation, of the monomer solution flow rate, with the flow profile automatically derived from the required MWD and other data. For experimental validation, a polymerization rig was especially built that included a process computer and an automatic gel permeation chromatograph. The chromatograph permitted the measurement of the MWD of the reactor effluent in a matter of minutes and the process computer was employed to implement the control policies and to perform the chromatograph data acquisition and reduction. In spite of the practical problems encountered, experiments showed at least a semi-quantitative validity of the method.

Notes: A real-time computer system is described which minimizes the total analysis time in gel permeation chromatography by automatically acquiring the data, performing the necessary calculations and displaying the molecular weight distribution and molecular weight averages as soon as the polymer peak has eluted. The calculation method described here is valid for linear homopolymers only, and does not include corrections for instrumental peak broadening. The experimental results show good reproducibility and precision. On-line changes of the constants and other parameters may be implemented by means of an auxiliary program which runs in parallel with the data analysis program. A system such as that described here is suitable for utilization as a measurement technique in process control applications. The programs are written in CORAL 66 for a Ferranti Argus 700 E computer.
