    Notes: The rate of catalytic CO oxidation on Pt(100) and (110) surfaces at low pressures (≤10−4 Torr) and under isothermal conditions may exhibit sustained temporal oscillations which are coupled with periodic transformations of the surface structures between reconstructed and nonreconstructed phases, the latter exhibiting higher oxygen sticking coefficients and hence higher reactivity. With Pt(100) the two surface phases exhibit a much larger difference in reactivity (=oxygen sticking coefficient) than with Pt(110), which effect accounts for the qualitative differences in the oscillatory behavior: if two of the control parameters (say pO2, T) are kept fixed, the third (pCO) may be varied with Pt(100) over a fairly wide range without leaving the oscillatory region. Minor (〈1%) fluctuations of the partial pressures associated with the varying reaction rate are hence without any noticeable effect. Coupling between surface reaction and diffusion causes wave propagation of the surface phase transformations and therefore spatial self-organization, as demonstrated by scanning LEED experiments. With Pt(110), on the other hand, the oscillatory region is very narrow. In this case mass transport through the gas phase as caused by the small pressure variations associated with the reaction lead to synchronization between different parts of the surface. Computer simulations with the cellular automaton technique confirm qualitatively the experimental findings and support the conclusions reached.

    Notes: The previously observed phenomena of temporal and spatial self-organization during the catalytic oxidation of CO on a Pt(100) surface were computer simulated by use of the cellular automaton technique. The underlying model is footed on the knowledge about the individual reaction steps (adsorption, desorption, surface structural transformation, etc.), which in turn formed the basis of a previous theoretical treatment in terms of the formulation and solution of a set of coupled differential equations. The present result nicely show the formation and propagation of two-dimensional patterns, and they reproduce qualitatively well all the experimental observations. The development of macroscopic patterns even with an a priori perfectly homogeneous surface is a particularly interesting effect.

    Notes: Four monoclonal antibodies against antigens expressed differentially by the normal thymus epithelium, which define the cortical, medullary and subcapsular compartments, were used for immunohistological characterization of the epithelial cells in 14 thymomas. Furthermore, thymoma-associated lymphocytes were studied with monoclonal antibodies directed against T-lymphocyte differentiation antigens (CD1a, CD3, T-cell antigen receptor). Only four of the 14 thymomas could be classified into either medullary or cortical type thymoma based on the immunophenotype of epithelial cells. Ten cases escaped immunophenotypical classification due to co-expression of medullary and cortical antigens by the tumour cells. This aberration from the normal phenotype might indicate the failure of differentiation of such tumours. The immunophenotype of the associated lymphocytes, on the other hand, made it possible to classify the tumours as cortical (5 cases), mixed (2) and medullary (3) thymomas. Four thymomas escaped this classification scheme due to the absence of lymphocytes (2) or to a hybrid immunophenotype (2). Nevertheless, thymocytes of cortical type clearly predominated and were seen in all thymomas with associated lymphocytes. This feature may constitute a good diagnostic tool in differential diagnosis since, in 28 mediastinal or extramediastinal metastasis of tumours not derived from thymic epithelium and associated with various numbers of lymphocytes, none of them were found to contain CD1a positive lymphocytes.

    Notes: Summary A patient with peripheral T-cell Lymphoma and aquired, systemic osteosclerosis is described. Bone histology showed a spectacular activation of osteoblasts accompanyed by massive new bone formation. Alkaline phosphatase in serum was elevated and increased to 〉2000 U/l when the lymphoma became refractory to chemotherapy. In the patient's serum an osteoblast-activating factor could be demonstrated using a rat osteogenic osteosarcoma cell line (ROS 17/2.8). The factor was absent during remission of the tumor. We conclude that osteosclerosis was a paraneoplastic syndrome in this patient due to the secretion of an osteoblast-stimulating factor by the T-cell lymphoma. This situation is similar to the secretion of osteoclast-activating factors described in B-cell lymphomas, particularly multiple myeloma. The characterization of such a factor could be of therapeutic relevance.

    Notes: Summary Using the monoclonal antibody EGFR1, normal mammary gland and a series of 213 unselected primary breast tumours were investigated immunohistochemically for expression of epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR). In normal breast EGFR was expressed in variable patterns in lobular, ductal, and myoepithelial cells. In fibroadenoma, EGFR was detectable in variable numbers of ductal and myoepithelial cells and in stromal fibroblasts. The myoepithelial compartment of 2 cystosarcomas phyllodes also expressed EGFR. Among the 197 carcinomas tested only 20.3% contained EGFR expressing tumour cells which represented a minority in 12.2%, the majority in 2.1%, and the entire neoplastic population in 6.1% of the cases. Again, non-neoplastic ductal remnants often contained EGFR positive myoepithelial and ductal cells whereas stromal fibro-blasts expressed EGFR only occasionally. We conclude that in contrast to the normal state, EGFR-expression is a rather rare phenomenon in breast carcinoma cells, positively correlated with a declining grade of differentiation (p〈0.025) and at least occasionally associated with squamous metaplasia within the tumour, that EGFR expression is not exclusively restricted to cells of the epithelial lineage, and that EGFR may have other functions not related to proliferation, since it is commonly detectable in myoepithelial cells.

    Notes: Summary This is a report on 8 mediastinal tumours that occurred in young adults (19–43 years, mean: 29.4); predominantly in females (6/8). Initial symptoms consisted of thoracic pain and venectasia and in only one case in B symptoms. After surgical tumour reduction, radiation and/or chemotherapy, local recurrence was observed in each case under clinical care; abdominal spread is presently suspected in 3 patients; 3 died 11, 13 and 22 months after diagnosis. None developed leukaemia. The tumours are B-cell neoplasms with a characteristic immunophenotype: leucocyte common antigen+, common acute lymphoblastic leukaemia antigen−, B 1-antigen+, surface and cytoplasmic immunoglobulin−. Flow cytometry revealed DNA-diploidy in 7 cases and a moderately (3.2–3.8%) to extremely high (8.0–20.6%) S-phase component. The proliferation associated antigen Ki67 was detectable in 10–60% of the tumour cell nuclei, thus stressing the considerable or rapid growth. Histopathology is characterized by a diffuse growth pattern and a clearness and abundance of cytoplasm of the pleomorphic tumour cells, which vary in size and nuclear morphology from patient to patient. Apoptoses are more numerous than mitoses. Fibrosis and focal necrosis are common, sclerosis is present in 3 cases. We suggest that primary mediastinal lymphoma of B cell type is a novel B-lymphoma variant.

    Notes: Summary Branched histiocytic cells of the epidermis, the oral and anal mucosa, the tonsillar crypt epithelium, the thymus and of the T-cell-dependent areas of lymph node, spleen, and tonsil were examined with immunohistochemical single- and double-staining techniques. The markers used were a monoclonal anti-T6-antibody, a monoclonal anti-HLA-DR-antibody, heteroantiserum to S-100 protein and peanut agglutinin. Anti-HLA-DR and peanut agglutinin reacted with a considerable number of branched histiocytic cells, whereas anti-T6 and anti-S-100 protein only stained relatively small subpopulations. Concerning the population of branched histiocytic cells, double-staining revealed that the tissue distributions of all the markers used overlapped each other to various degrees; this was demonstrated by the different numbers of double-stained cells obtained in the experiments using all six possible combinations of primary reagents. The number of branched histiocytic cells co-expressing the markers varied depending upon marker combinations, types of tissue and microenvironment. We suggest that much of the immunologic phenotype of branched histiocytic cells is dynamic rather than static.

    Notes: Abstract We calculate ground-state properties of nuclei in the Z≧100 region. The most stable superheavy elements are predicted for lower neutron number than in previous investigations, namely 110 288 X and 110 290 X, both with a calculated half-life of around 200 days. A new feature is a local minimum in the ground-state shell correction at Z=110 andN=162. Elements in this region are therefore expected to show increased stability relative to some earlier expectations.
