Notes: Using histochemical methods, morphofunctional aspects of the alimentary tract of larval coregonids were investigated. Larvae of Coregonus lavaretus were reared for 34 days with either zooplankton or one of two dry diets. Ontogeny, localization and diet-related modifications of the following enzymes were examined: trypsin (luminal digestion), aminopeptidase, maltase, alkaline phosphatase (brush border-bound digestion) and unspecific esterase (intracellular nutrient processing). All of the enzymes studied were present in 13-day-old larvae. Except for the intracellularly located unspecific esterase, there was an ontogenetic enhancement of enzyme staining intensities accompanied by a significant increase in the volume of the intestinal mucosa. Enzyme activities differed within and between intestinal regions. This finding suggests that a spatial gradient of nutrient breakdown and absorption already exists in the morphologically and physiologically incompletely developed digestive system of larval coregonids. Digestive enzyme activities were modified in response to the dietary regimen. There was no obvious correlation between enzymic response and growth performance of the larvae.

Notes: Abstract We isolated from Candida maltosa mutants lacking saccharopine reductase (lys9) and saccharopine dehydrogenase (lys1). They accumulated α-aminoadipate-δ-semialdehyde (AASA) in the cell and excreted it into the culture medium. In the presence of 15 g glucose/l, 1.25 g NH4H2PO4/l and 50 mg l-lysine/l in a minimal salt medium C. maltosa G285 (lys1) produced about 80–90 mg AASA/l within 48 h. It is the first report of lysine-requiring yeast mutants that accumulate and excrete AASA. In contrast, Pichia guilliermondii lys9 mutants lacked this AASA overproduction. The AASA accumulation by C. maltosa mutants may be explained by the low feedback regulation of their homocitrate synthase and the equilibrium of the enzyme reactions involved in the lysine biosynthesis.

Notes: Summary Osteocalcin serum levels reflect bone turnover. In renal insufficiency secondary hyperparathyroidism and reduced renal clearance might be responsible for elevated serum levels of osteocalcin. Renal transplantation might improve renal osteodystrophy and therefore could influence osteocalcin serum levels. We determined the influence of renal transplantation on osteocalcin levels in 37 consecutive patients (25m/12f) by RIA. Blood samples were collected prior to, 3 days, 28 days, 6 months and 12 months after renal transplantation. Prior to renal transplantation osteocalcin levels were significantly elevated (x±s: 23.4±12.8 ng/ml) compared to healthy volunteers (4.1±1.4 ng/ml). Following renal transplantation osteocalcin decreased significantly (9.4±8.9 ng/ml) 3 days and (7.1±7.8 ng/ml) 28 days. However, 6 and 12 months following renal transplantation the mean osteocalcin level increased again (8.3±5.7 ng/ml, 12.1±15.4 ng/ml). At 6 months 11 and at 12 months only 6 of 37 patients had osteocalcin levels in the normal range. 12 months following renal transplantation 21 out of 37 patients with elevated osteocalcin levels had parathyroid hormone levels above the normal range. Additionally to increased osteocalcin levels patients prior to renal transplantation had elevated alkaline phosphatase. Alkaline phosphatase had following renal transplantation a similar pattern as osteocalcin with initial decrease and secondary increase 6 and 12 months after renal transplantation. Parathyroid hormone was elevated in all patients before renal transplantation. Following renal transplantation mean parathyroid hormone levels fell significantly, however remained above normal range in 57% of these 37 patients. Osteocalcin serum levels correlated positively with alkaline phosphatase (rs=0.43−0.62;p〈0.011) and parathyroid hormone (0.3−0.66p〈0.07). This correlation of osteocalcin with alkaline phosphatase and parathyroid hormone prior to and after renal transplantation suggests that osteocalcin may be a confirmative parameter in renal osteodystrophy in patients on chronic intermittent hemodialysis and following renal transplantation.

Notes: Abstract A 10-year old, mentally and physically normally developed girl complained of back pain following an accident. Radiological findings revealed an inhomogeneous, coarse osteosclerosis along the endplates and posterior parts of the ovoid shaped vertebral bodies, in the proximal and distal femora-, proximal humeri and tibia epiphyses, and along the lateral aspects of the femoral necks. The pelvis presented a mottled appearance of the trabecular pattern at the symphysis pubis and the lateral parts of ischii and sclerosis in the acetabular region. The only laboratory abnormality was a high serum parathormone level. The family history revealed an autosomal dominant inheritance. The name proposed by Maroteaux for this skeletal disorder is osteomesopycnosis, as the lesions were localized to the spine, pelvis and sometimes proximal femur. The skull, ribs, long bones, hands and feet were not involved in the reported 12 cases. Radiographs of this patient showed in addition changes in the hand. This disease must be distinguished from atypical axial osteomalacia.

Notes: Abstract Gene cloning and sequencing of theHLA-B locus split antigens B38 (B16.1) and B39 (B16.2) allowed localization of their subtypic as well as their public specificities HLA-Bw4 or-Bw6 to the α-helical region of the α 1 domain flanked by the amino acid positions 74–83. Comparison of their amino acid sequences with those of otherHLA-B-locus alleles established HLA-Bw6 to be distinguished by Ser at residue 77 and Asn at residue 80. In contrast, HLA-Bw4 is characterized by at least seven different patterns of amino acid exchanges at positions 77 and 80–83. Reactivity patterns of Bw4-or Bw6-specific monoclonal antibodies reveal two alloantigenic epitopes contributing to the HLA-Bw4 or-Bw6 specificity residing next to the region of highest diversity of the α 1 domain.

Notes: Summary X-irradiation of the head of adult mice leads to DNA repair synthesis (unscheduled DNA synthesis, UDS) in non-proliferating cells of the brain as shown autoradiographically after injection of3H-thymidine and subsequent irradiation. The extent of UDS induced by one and the same X-ray dose varies between different cell types and also between different brain areas. Within the range of X-ray doses studied (2 to 100 Gy) a linear dose effect relationship was observed. No evidence of a saturation effect was found. The slopes of the regression lines for the dose effect relationship differ considerably for the different cell types. Two interesting correlations were found, if the present results were compared with other data in the literature: (i) There seems to be a correlation between the extent of UDS and radiosensitivity of the different cell types, the cells with low DNA repair synthetic rates being more radiosensitive. (ii) The extent of UDS of the different cell types correlates well with the extent of protein synthesis of the corresponding cell types. Apart from radiation induced UDS, spontaneous UDS was found to occur in sham-irradiated animals. The extent of spontaneous UDS also differs considerably between different cell types as well as between different brain areas. The increase of spontaneous UDS with increasing duration of immobilization of the animals during sham irradiation suggests a relationship between spontaneous UDS and stress.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Durch die Phasenverteilung von Flüssigkeit und Dampf ergeben sich im horizontalen Verdampferrohr i.a. unterschiedliche lokale Wärmeübergangskoeffizienten (WÜK) am Rohrumfang.
Notes: Abstract As a result of the non uniform phase distribution of liquid and vapour local heat transfer coefficients vary considerably along the circumference in a horizontal evaporator tube. It was expected that both modes of heating, uniform heat flux ( $$\dot q$$ = const) and uniform inside wall temperature (T W =const), lead to different circumferential averaged heat transfer coefficients (HTC). The experiments show that the circumferential averaged HTC is lower in the case of uniform heat flux compared to the value of uniform wall temperature if the perimeter of the tube is only partly wetted. However, the reduction is affected by circumferential heat conduction. This reduction is a result of both, the higher wall temperature on the top of the tube and the reduction of the wetted perimeter.

Notes: Summary Seven cases are reported that initially presented on endoscopic examination as duodenal polyps originating from islands of gastric mucosa within the duodenal bulb. Microscopic examination revealed mucosal cysts (MC), focal foveolar hyperplasia (FFH), and hyperplastic polyp (HPP). These lesions must be added to the list of neoplastic and tumorlike lesions of the duodenum that may endoscopically present as polyps.
