Notes: Thermal stability of PtSi contact to epitaxial Ge0.5Si0.5/(100)Si has been investigated. The PtSi layer remained structurally and morphologically intact on the epitaxial Ge-Si alloy at temperatures around 650 °C. When annealed at higher temperatures, PtSi penetrated locally into the alloy, although no chemical reaction was observed. The observed stability of PtSi is explained on the basis of a ternary Pt-Ge-Si equilibrium phase diagram. Other choices of contact compounds on Ge-Si alloys are also discussed.

Notes: The food intake, growth, food conversion ratio and survival of yearling pufferfish, Fugu obscurus Abe, were investigated under different water salinity conditions over a 54-day period. Within the salinity regimes of 0 (freshwater), 8, 18, and 35‰, the food intake levels were 0.97%, 1.43%, 1.19% and 1.01%, respectively; food conversion ratios were 1.31, 1.93, 1.61 and 1.36, respectively; and specific growth rates were 0.41%, 1.15%, 0.84%, and 0.35%, respectively. The three data series were reduced with increasing salinity. However, the survival rates did not show the same tendencies, which were 80%, 100%, 100%, and 67%, respectively. There were significant differences among the treatments. In conclusion, the yearling pufferfish optimum culture salinity condition was about 8‰.

Notes: Summary This study was designed to compare the degree of reactive astrogliosis occurring around a puncture wound in the brain of normal rats and at different intervals after a similar puncture wound in rats with a portocaval anastomosis. The gliosis was evaluated by the number of astrocytes, the thickness of their processes and the intensity of the glial fibrillary acidic protein immunoreactivity. After the puncture wound in the brain of rats with a portocaval anastomosis, the gliosis varied at different intervals being: (1) decreased at 10 days, (2) markedly increased at 5 weeks and (3) significantly decreased at 8, 12, and 16 weeks. These findings suggest that 5 weeks after portocaval anastomosis, an active proliferation of the metabolically altered astrocytes occurs with heightened synthesis of glial fibrillary acidic protein in the period of adaptive compensation, the so-called compensatory ‘rebound’. At 8 weeks or more after portocaval anastomosis, these altered astrocytes were considered to be in the phase of decompensation and incapable of maintaining the reactive response which occurred in normal rats. The compensatory rebound and decompensatory ‘decline’ illustrate the dynamic plasticity of the reactive astrogliosis.

Notes: Abstract A helium/air mixture free round jet into still air was investigated using a laser Doppler anemometer and a hot-wire type concentration probe. The jet Reynolds number was 4,300 and the jet-to-ambient fluid density ratio was set at 0.64. Simultaneous measurements of the mixture density and the axial and radial velocities were carried out in both the near and far fields of the jet. A detailed analysis of the turbulent mass transfer and jet characteristics has been presented by So et al. (1990). This paper reports on the higher order statistics and the characteristics of the single and joint probability density distributions of the mixture density and the axial and radial velocities. The behavior of these distributions across and along the jet is analyzed and compared with other single and joint probability density distributions.

Notes: Abstract Five criteria for evaluating the whisker microstructure have been suggested, which include (1) proportion of “perfect” single crystals, (2) morphology and growth direction, (3) length, diameter and ratio ofL/D, (4) the bulk and surface chemistries, (5) defects and their distribution. Three sets of commercially available SiC whiskers made in two countries and the TiN whiskers were characterized in terms of the above criteria.

Notes: The objective of achieving economically finite element solutions of specified accuracy is now within reach. The importance of this objective is finally recognized by commercial code originators and efforts directed at automating the process are meeting with success.Three essential ingredients are here necessary. These are: (i) economical and efficient a posteriori error estimating processes; (ii) close prediction of the refinement necessary for a specific accuracy to be achieved so that numerous trial and error solutions can be avoided; (iii) implementation of the predicted refinement. With h and h-p adaptive processes Step (iii) requires powerful mesh generator facilities capable of achieving meshes of specified density. The paper considers all three aspects, introducing some novel concepts in error estimation and discussing in some detail the problem of mesh generation. As such, it introduces the other papers of this special issue, which discuss various aspects in more detail.

Notes: A methodology for the automatic mesh generation of quadrilateral elements is proposed. The methodology is based on the facts that (i) a region can always be subdivided entirely into quadrilaterals if the polygon which forms the boundary of the region has an even number of sides, (ii) a quadrilateral can be formed by two triangles which share a common side. By taking advantage of the techniques developed in an existing automatic triangular mesh generator, quadrilateral meshes can be generated according to the distribution of user specified element size over the domain of interest. In particular, an automatic quadrilateral mesh generator based on the advancing front technique for triangular mesh generation1 is described. Techniques to improve the quality of the generated quadrilateral meshes are introduced. The robustness and versatility of the mesh generator are demonstrated by a variety of examples.

Notes: A higher-resolution and bounded discretization scheme is proposed for calculations of incompressible steady flows with finite-volume methods. The scheme combines a second-order upstream-weighted approximation with the first-order upwind differencing under the control of a convection boundedness criterion. It is easy to implement for calculations of multi-dimensional flows, and the resulting finite-difference coefficient matrix is always diagonally dominant. Applications to three test problems, two linear and one non-linear, and comparisons with two commonly used schemes, hybrid upwind/central differencing and QUICK, demonstrate the capability of the method in capturing steep gradients while maintaining the boundedness of solutions.
