Notes: Summary An RFLP linkage map of the potato is presented which comprises 304 loci derived from 230 DNA probes and one morphological marker (tuber skin color). The self-incompatibility locus of potato was mapped to chromosome I, which is homoeologous to tomato chromosome I. By mapping chromosome-specific tomato RFLP markers in potato and, vice versa, potato markers in tomato, the different potato and tomato RFLP maps were aligned to each other and the similarity of the potato and tomato genome was confirmed. The numbers given to the 12 potato chromosomes are now in accordance with the established tomato nomenclature. Comparisons between potato RFLP maps derived from different genetic backgrounds revealed conservation of marker order but differences in chromosome and total map length. In particular, significant reduction of map length was observed in interspecific compared to intraspecific crosses. The distribution of regions with distorted segregation ratios in the genome was analyzed for four potato parents. The most prominent distortion of recombination was found to be caused by the self-incompatibility locus.

Notes: Abstract Pure autonomic failure (PAF; also known as idiopathic orthostatic hypotension or Bradbury-Eggleston syndrome) is an uncommon sporadic disorder, characterized by autonomic failure without other neurological deficits and histopathologically by cell loss in intermediolateral columns and sympathetic ganglia. Few postmortem studies of patients with PAF have been reported in the literature, and none have demonstrated Lewy bodies in distal axons, although this has been described as a feature in Parkinson’s disease with autonomic failure. We report a patient with PAF who had orthostatic hypotension and urinary symptoms for 15 years prior to death at the age of 63 years. Postmortem findings included typical and atypical Lewy bodies in the substantia nigra, locus ceruleus, substantia innominata, and sympathetic ganglia, as well as in autonomic axons in the epicardial fat, autonomic nerve fascicles in periadrenal adipose tissue, and autonomic nerves in the muscularis of the urinary bladder. Sites of autonomic nerve involvement correlated with clinical symptomatology, and thus were a valuable observation in the complete autopsy. Systemic autopsy results should be reviewed carefully in patients with PAF, as Lewy bodies in this disease may be seen in distal axons at a great length from their primary cell bodies.

Notes: Abstract Over the past 5 years we have used the new dimeric, non-ionic, water-soluble contrast agent iotrolan (Isovist-300) in 370 studies of the paediatric gastrointestinal tract. Iotrolan is by far the best accepted and tolerated contrast agent for young children. Because of its iso-osmolality it can be used without dilution. No ill effects were reported in cases of aspiration or perforation. In all studies very high contrast images were obtained and the required diagnostic information was provided. The only disadvantage of iotrolan is its present high price. However, in view of the small volumes required in children (10 ml is sufficient in 59% and 20 ml sufficient in 92% of investigations) this should not be a major obstacle to its use. Iotrolan promotes a much greater readiness among paediatricians and paediatric surgeons to have gastrointestinal studies performed on very small and very sick babies.

Notes: Abstract Report of a pediatric case with pulmonary arteriovenous fistula (PAVF) in hereditary hemorrhagic teleangiectasia (HHT), primary suspected by ultrasound. There is a characteristic sonographic feature of the complex type of PAVF revealing septations in contrast of the simple type. The diagnosis was established by angiography.

Notes: Abstract Canavan disease (CD) is a rare leukodystrophy which is lethal in infancy or early childhood. The underlying biochemical abnormality in CD is a hereditary deficiency ofN-aspartoacylase transmitted in an autosomal recessive fashion. We report on the ultrasound (US), CT, and MRI findings of three unrelated boys with biochemically confirmed CD. At 6 and 9 months of age, two CD patients with rapid neurological deterioration showed markedly enhanced acoustic attenuation of the white matter with the exception of the corpus callosum, giving the appearance of a reversed pattern of echogenicity of cortical gray and subcortical white matter. While gyri and sulci had an almost normal US appearance, the periventricular gray matter featured prominently with increased echogenicity. In contrast another CD patient with a more protracted course had ventricular enlargement when examined by US at 5 and 9 months but no alteration in white matter echogenicity. MRI showed impaired myelinization in all three patients with Canavan disease.

Notes: Abstract From April 1992 to May 1994, 780 patients aged from 1 day to 8 years were examined. Sedation of these patients was conducted by giving chlorprothixene orally and, in some cases, chloral hydrate had to be added. The patients were monitored with a pulse oxymeter. Investigations could begin after 50–120 min. In 710 patients (91 %) the first attempt to perform the examination was successful; 70 patients required one or two further attempts. Only two of the 780 patients (0.5 %) showed evidence of respiratory depression. The total number of pediatric MRI examinations performed in 1 year is almost 1000. In the hands of an experienced pediatric radiologist these examinations can be performed entirely without anesthesia.

Notes: Abstract Observed optical reflectivity in the infrared spectral region is compared with theoretical predictions in a strongly coupled electron–phonon system. Starting from a Fröhlich Hamiltonian, the spectral functions and their temperature dependence are derived. A full analysis including vertex corrections leads to an expression for the optical conductivity σ(ω) that can be formulated in terms of the well-known optical conductivity for a quasi-isotropic system without vertex corrections. A numerical comparison between the full result and the so-called extended Drude formula, its weak coupling expansion, shows little difference over a wide range of coupling constants. Normal-state optical spectra for the high-T c superconductors YBa2Cu3O7 and La2 − x Sr x CuO4 at optimal doping are compared with the results of model calculations. Taking the plasma frequency and ∈∞ from band structure calculations, the model has only one free parameter, the electron–phonon coupling constant λ. In both materials the overall behavior of the reflectivity can be well accounted for over a wide frequency range. Systematic differences exist only in the mid-infrared region. They become more pronounced with increasing frequency, which indicates that a detailed model for the optical response should include temperature-dependent mid-infrared bands.

Notes: Summary Treatment with L-threo-3,4-dihydroxyphenylserine (L-threo-dops), a synthetic precursor of norepinephrine, significantly increased upright blood pressure in patients with multiple system atrophy but had no effect on the upright blood pressure of patients with pure autonomic failure. These results suggest that the site of action of L-threo-dops is central and that its pressor effect requires intact peripheral sympathetic neurons.
