Notes: The power loss of Mn-Zn ferrites and its dependency on the microstructural factors have been investigated. The power loss was found to be lowered due to the formation of a high-electrical-resistive boundary layers, which is accomplished by an addition of specific refractory oxides, which are concentrated on the grain boundary and form a boundary layer with CaO. The new material, having a low power loss at high frequency (∼1 MHz), has been developed with the HfO2 addition.

Notes: Ion vibration gives rise to a new pulsing dipole moment which affects the long-range interaction with the target molecule. This pulsing long-range interaction mechanism has been applied to the proton-transfer reaction NH+3(ν)+NH3→NH2+NH+4 in which the vibrational mode-specific depression of the reaction rate is observed. Significance of the vibrationally induced dipole moment of NH+3(ν) has been clarified in such a way that the origin of the depression is ascribed to the interaction of this pulsing dipole moment with the permanent dipole moment of NH3. The results of calculation agree qualitatively well with the experimental result [Chupka and Russell, J. Chem. Phys. 48, 1527 (1968)].

Notes: Experimental verification is made of a new polarization splitter which utilizes artificial anisotropic dielectrics. The splitter is composed of layers of periodically laminated SiO2/TiO2 thin films. The SiO2 and TiO2 films are alternately deposited by rf sputtering and reactive dc sputtering, respectively. The thickness of each layer is 50 nm, while the total number of the layers amounts to 2000. The measured polarization split angles are 5.7° (λ=0.63 μm) and 5.1° (λ=1.3 μm), being roughly the same as those predicted.

Notes: A computer algorithm for tidal analysis is developed, based on a Bayesian method proposed by Ishiguro et al. (1983). The basic assumption of the method is smoothness of the drift. This assumption is represented in the form of prior probability in the Bayesian model. Once the prior distribution is determined, the parameters used in the analysis model are obtained by maximizing the posterior distribution of the parameters. For the given data, ABIC (Akaike's Bayesian Information Criterion, Akaike 1980) is used to select the optimum values of the hyperparameters of the prior distribution and combination of parameters. The program, BAYTAP-G, can be adapted to tidal data which includes such irregularities as drift, occasional steps and disturbances caused by meteorological influences. The applicability of this program is examined using simulated data and real strain data.

Notes: Summary Detailed dissections were performed on 83 pelvic halves from 45 cadavers in order to obtain more accurate data on the composition of the lateral ligament of the rectum and the rectosacral fascia. The middle rectal artery was observed in only 18 out of 81 spcimens (22.2%). The lateral ligament of the rectum was divided into lateral and medial portions, according to the positional relationship to the pelvic plexus. The lateral part consisted of a superoanterior and an inferoposterior subdivision. The main component of the former was the middle rectal artery, while the pelvic splanchnic nerves were contained in the latter. Both components can be considered to contribute to the formation of the medial part, although the middle rectal vessels were not always present. The medial part consisted of the rectal branches from the pelvic plexus and their connective tissue. The rectosacral fascia was formed by dense connective tissue between the posterior wall of the rectum and the third and fourth sacral vertebrae. The main components of the fascia were branches of the lateral and median sacral vessels and the sacral splanchnic nerves which arose directly from the sacral sympathetic ganglia.

Notes: Summary Based upon the detailed dissections of the lymphatic system of four adult cadavers, the lymphatic drainage of the gallbladder was divided into three pathways. 1) The cholecysto-retropancreatic pathway, which can be regarded as the main pathway, had two routes, one running spirally and posteriorly from the anterior surface of the common bile duct to the right, and the other running almost straight down from the posterior surface of the common bile duct. At the retroportal segment, these routes converged at a large lymph node, which appeared critical as the main terminal lymph node of this pathway. We designated this node the principal retroportal node. 2) The cholecysto-celiac pathway was the route by which some of the lymphatics from the gallbladder ran to the left through the hepatoduodenal ligament to reach the celiac nodes. 3) The cholecysto-mesenteric pathway was the route by which some of the lymphatics ran to the left in front of the portal vein and connected with the nodes at the superior mesenteric root. These three pathways converged with the abdomino-aortic lymph nodes near the left renal vein; in particular, the nodes in the interaortico-caval space were considered important.

Notes: Summary The presence of nineteen blood coagulation factors and fibrinolysis factors was immunohistochemically evaluated in human lymph node germinal centers (GCs). Twelve of these factors were detected within lymphoid GCs. The predominant pattern was dendritic with occasional crescent-shaped, ring-shaped or ‘moth-eaten’ appearance. Immunostains of factor VIII-related antigen, factor I, protein C, tetranectin, antithrombin III, type 2-plasminogen activator inhibitor, and α2-plasmin inhibitor were almost entirely absent from GCs, although they reacted in vascular wall and lumen, respectively. The immunostaining to high molecular weight kininogen, kallikrein, factors XII, X, V, II, XIIIa, XIIIs, plasminogen, tissue-plasminogen activator, and type 1-plasminogen activator inhibitor more frequently revealed a positive dendritic pattern. Immuno-electron microscopy demonstrated factor X and factor XIIIa attached to the cell surfaces of lymphocytes, macrophages, and follicular dendritic cells (FDCs); and in the intercellular space within GCs, especially attached to the labyrinthine-like structure of FDCs. No reaction products were observed in the perinuclear cisternae and rough endoplasmic reticulum in either lymphocytes or FDCs. Our data demonstrate that human lymphoid GCs really contain some of the proteins related to the blood coagulation and fibrinolysis cascades.

Notes: Summary This study describes the phenology of sporophytes of the fern Dryopteris filix-mas in relation to whole plant development. Sterile and fertile potted sporophytes were set out at an exposed site and the seasonal development of the fronds was measured from the commencement of unfolding, through the phase of increasing length, up to discoloration. The physiological activity of the fronds was determined by measuring photosynthetic gas exchange. The fronds of sterile sporophytes unfolded in April, about a week earlier than those of fertile plants, but the colour had already begun to turn in September and their life span was 1–2 months shorter. However, between mid-June and the end of August the sterile sporophytes put out several sets of new fronds: these overwintered without changing color and were still photosynthetically active in the following spring. All types of fronds were fully expanded 1–2 months from the beginning of unfolding and, with a natural supply of CO2, had similar maximum net photosynthetic rates of 8–9 μmol/m2 · s. The decline in photosynthetic performance began before symptoms of senescence were visible and was due to decreased efficiency of the mesophyll. It is concluded that the phenology of D. filix-mas changes with transition from the sterile to the fertile phase. Whereas fertile sporophytes are genuinely summergreen, the sterile sporophytes with their summer fronds remain green throughout the winter and should therefore be termed semi-evergreen. The formation of overwintering summer shoots clearly extends the period of photosynthetic productivity of sterile sporophytes.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Komplexe von Molybdän(VI) mit Trioktylamin (TOA, R3N) und Trioktylmethylammoniumchlorid (TOMAC, R3R'NCl) wurden hergestellt, mittels TG und DTA in Luft und in Stickstoffatmosphäre untersucht.
Notes: Abstract The complexes of molybdenum(VI) with trioctylamine (TOA, R3N) and trioctyl methylammonium chloride (TOMAC, R3R'NCl) were prepared by drying in vacuo the organic solutions for the extraction of molybdenum(VI) from hydrochloric acid solutions at low and higher acidities, respectively, by TOA and TOMAC in benzene. The resulting complexes were examined by thermal analysis (TG and DTA) in air and under the atmosphere of nitrogen, and their thermally decomposed products such as volatile matters and residues by gas chlomatography, X-ray diffraction study and infrared spectrophotometry. It was found that their complexes decompose thermally to MoO3 by cracking of alkyl groups combined with molybdenum(VI) ion. Accordingly the thermal decomposition process of those complexes is discussed and the probable structure of the complexes is proposed on the basis of the results obtained.

Notes: Abstract Changes in the phase compositions and microstructures of magnesia-partially-stabilized zirconia (Mg-PSZ) were studied in water at 80–300 °C, 1 m HCl solutions at 80–140 °C and 1 m CH3COOH-CH3COONa buffer solutions at pH 3 and 80–140 °C for 10–40 days. The tetragonal to monoclinic phase transformation and the degradation of the fracture strength occurred in water above 200 °C. On the other hand, although no noticeable tetragonal to monoclinic phase transformation proceeded in 1 m HCl solutions and 1 m CH3COOH-CH3-COONa buffer solutions at pH 3 below 140 °C, the fracture strength of Mg-PSZ greatly degraded. The dissolution of Mg2+ ion was observed in water above 200 °C and in 1 m HCl solutions above 80 °C.
