Notes: Abstract  We report an autopsy case of mixed ductal-endocrine carcinoma of the pancreas presenting as gastrinoma with Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. A 38-year-old Japanese male was found to have Zollinger-Ellison syndrome and pancreatic gastrinoma, and gastrectomy and resection of the pancreatic tumor were performed. However, hypergastrinemia persisted, and the patient died of disseminated carcinomatosis at 62 years of age, 24 years after the onset of Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. At autopsy, the main tumor was present in the residual pancreas, and metastases were noted in many organs. In the pancreas and other organs, ductal and endocrine carcinoma areas were mixed and there was a gradual transition between the two. No acinar differentiation was noted. The ductal elements were positive for mucins and carcinoembryonic antigen but negative for neuroendocrine markers, while endocrine elements were positive for chromogranin A and synaptophysin and to a lesser extent for gastrin, but negative for mucins and carcinoembryonic antigen. The ductal elements comprised about 30% of the tumor cells, and endocrine elements 70%. According to the revised World Health Organization classification, our case was diagnosed as mixed ductal-endocrine carcinoma. Our case is rare because the tumor manifested as gastrinoma with Zollinger-Ellison syndrome and the patient survived for 24 years. To the best of our knowledge, no such case has been reported. Our case suggests that pancreatic endocrine tumors may evolve into mixed ductal-endocrine carcinomas.

Notes: 9  atoms/cm2. In this study, in order to achieve an elementary analysis of each atom on the Si surface, metal atoms on the Si(001) surface are analyzed by STS and the result is evaluated with the first principles calculations of quantum mechanics. As metallic contaminations, sub-monolayer of Aluminum is evaporated on Si(001)2×1. The Local Density of State (LDOS) on the Al/Si(001)2×1 is measured by STS at room temperature. The measured LDOS at an Al dimer is in good agreement with that obtained from the calculation.

Notes: [Auszug] The BSCCO system has many superconducting phases with various values of Tc: examples of bulk materials are the high-Tc phase Bi2Sr2Ca2Cu3Ox ('2223') with Tc^ 110 K and the low-Tc phase Bi2Sr2CaCu2Ov ('2212') with TC = 80K. It is difficult, however, to obtain films of the high-Tc phase 2223. ...

Notes: Abstract A toxic substance (P-II fraction), fractionated from the pedicellariae of the sea urchinToxopneustes pileulus, dose-dependently caused the histamine release from rat peritoneal mast cells. The histamine release induced by P-II fraction increased with time, while compound 48/80 caused a more rapid histamine release. The dose-response curve for P-II fraction was studied with concentration 0.03–2.0 mg/ml. This reaction was dependent on Ca2+ and temperature. When glucose (5.5. mM) was omitted during the incubation step, the histamine release induced by P-II fraction was significantly reduced as compared to that of compound 48/80. Pyruvate reversed this reduction. On the other hand, the histamine release induced by P-II fraction was effectively potentiated by the addition of glucose (11.0 mM), but not that by compound 48/80. These results suggest that P-II fraction-induced histamine release differs from that of compound 48/80 disregards to the effects of glucose, because this histamine release appears to be more sensitive to the glycolytic pathway than compound 48/80-induced histamine release.

Notes: Abstract Dantrolene strongly and dose-dependently inhibited histamine release from rat peritoneal mast cells induced by anti-IgE. Dantrolene inhibited Ca2+-mobilization from intracellular Ca2+-store as well as histamine release in mast cells activated by anti-IgE, the effect on both of these phenomena being closely correlated. These results suggested that the effect of dantrolene on histamine release from rat mast cell might be due to the inhibition of Ca2+-release from intracellular Ca2+-store.

Notes: Abstract We report a case of hepatocellular carcinoma with hypercalcemia. There was no evidence of bone metastasis or increase in parathyroid hormone-related protein. The serum level of intact parathyroid hormone (intact PTH) was very high, and the results of the hepatic venous sampling suggested that the tumor produced intact PTH. Transcatheter arterial chemoembolization effectively controlled the humoral hypercalcemia.

Notes: Abstract  The study was designed to clarify the difference in pharmacokinetics of monoclonal antibodies (mAb) in animal models and humans, and to elucidate the applicability of animal models. 99mTc-labeled murine mAb – against carcinoembryonic antigen (designated BW431/26), and neural cell adhesion molecule (NE150) – and one chimeric mouse/human mAb against nonspecific cross-reacting antigen (chNCA) were administered i.v. to normal mice and athymic mice (370 kBq, 400 ng) xenografted with human cancer cells expressing antigens, and into patients with tumor (925 MBq, 1 mg). The biodistribution of two of the three mAb (not 99mTc-BW431/26) differed clearly in mice and patients. 99mTc-NE150 showed specific uptake in xenografted tumor and otherwise a normal biodistribution; however, clinical examination showed increased uptake in the liver with rapid blood clearance (mean α half-life = 31.1 min) compared with 99mTc-BW431/26 (28.4 h). 99mTc-chNCA demonstrated increased blood clearance and renal excretion in both normal and athymic mice, with accumulation in tumors. Clinical examination showed rapid blood clearance (mean α half-life = 6.4 min) and increased uptake in the liver. High-performance liquid chromatographic analysis of 99mTc-chNCA revealed the immune complex in blood, suggesting uptake of the complex by the reticuloendothelial cells. The biodistribution of radiolabeled mAb in animal and human models was variable and specific for each of the three mAb. The results of animal studies with mAb should be evaluated carefully before being extrapolated to humans, on the basis of the nature of the mAb and interacting substances.

Notes: Abstract Second-order vestibular neurons form the central links of the vestibulo-oculomotor three-neuron arcs that mediate compensatory eye movements. Most of the axons that provide for vertical vestibulo-ocular reflexes ascend in the medial longitudinal fasciculus (MLF) toward target neurons in the oculomotor and trochlear nuclei. We have now determined the morphology of individual excitatory second-order neurons of the anterior semicircular canal system that course outside the MLF to the oculomotor nucleus. The data were obtained by the intracellular horseradish peroxidase method. Cell somata of the extra-MLF anterior canal neurons were located in the superior vestibular nucleus. The main axon ascended through the deep reticular formation beneath the brachium conjunctivum to the rostral extent of the nucleus reticularis tegmenti pontis, where it crossed the midline. The main axon continued its trajectory to the caudal edge of the red nucleus from where it coursed back toward the oculomotor nucleus. Within the oculomotor nucleus, collaterals reached superior rectus and inferior oblique motoneurons. Some axon branches recrossed the midline within the oculomotor nucleus and reached the superior rectus motoneuron subdivision on that side. Since these neurons did not give off a collateral toward the spinal cord, they were classified as being of the vestibulo-oculomotor type and are thought to be involved exclusively in eye movement control. The signal content and spatial tuning characteristics of this anterior canal vestibulo-oculomotor neuron class remain to be determined.
