Notes: Photoion and photoelectron yields were measured for poly(methylmethacrylate) in the photon energy region of 8–40 eV using synchrotron radiation. Further, the valence-band structure was investigated with ultraviolet photoelectron spectra and valence effective Hamiltonian calculations. A significant difference was observed between the photon energy dependencies of photoion and photoelectron yields. The threshold energy for photoion emission was found to be 10.5 eV, while that for photoelectron emission was 8.5 eV, indicating holes created near the valence-band top do not contribute to the ion emission. At the higher-energy region, the ion emission efficiency was found to be enhanced in the photon energy region of 17–28 eV. The difference between the threshold energies of photoion and photoelectron emission and the enhancement of the photoion emission are discussed in conjunction with the valence-band structure.

Notes: Summary An extracranial vertebral artery aneurysm in a patient with neurofibromatosis is described. The aneurysm was treated by endovascular balloon occlusion of the proximal vetebral artery. The details of the therapeutic management are discussed, and the vascular manifestations of neurofibromatosis are reviewed.

Notes: Summary We studied 52 patients with cerebral arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) by selective angiography and found that half received supply from meningeal branches of the external carotid artery. The frequency of meningeal arteral contribution was significantly higher in superficial AVMs, especially in the temporal, parietal and occipital regions. Larger lesions and higher shunt with steal phenomena on angiography were other factors favouring a meningeal arterial contribution. Diffuse AVMs with pial arterial networks around the nidus commonly received meningeal blood supply. In the past, meningeal feeders have been though to be congenital, but this study suggests that they may develop during growth of the AVM.

Notes: Abstract We examined T2 shortening in six children with infarcts due to moyamoya disease to clarify whether there are characteristic patterns of T2 shortening in the deep grey and white matter. Profound T2 shortening in the deep grey and white matter was observed in the acute stage of infarct in two cases, which changed to high intensity in the chronic stage; in this stage no T2 shortening was demonstrated in any case. Neither haemorrhagic infarction nor calcification was seen on CT or MRI. There could be longitudinally different T2 shortening patterns between infarcts due to moyamoya disease and other disorders.

Notes: Summary Two children with congenital rubella virus and six with cytomegalovirus (CMV) infections, were examined by magnetic resonance (MR) and CT. Cranial MR imaging (MRI) with T2-weighted spin-echo (SE) and inversion recovery (IR) sequences demonstrated the following: periventricular hyperintensity (4), subcortical hyperintensity (5), delayed myelination (4), oligo/pachygyria (2), cerebellar hypoplasia (2). This study showed that the more-disabled children had more marked abnormal MRI findings. MRI was more effective in the detection of parenchymal lesion than was CT, although intraventricular calcification was better visualized with CT.

Notes: Abstract A 72-year-old female with intradiploic haemangioma associated with epidural haematoma is reported. MRI finding of the lesion is described. The cause of the epidural haematoma is speculated due to fragile vessels attached directly to dura mater through the pores of the inner table of the diploë.

Notes: Summary We examined the effects of the recently developed calcium antagonist HA1077 on cerebral haemodynamics during the chronic stage of the two-haemorrhage canine model system of vasospasm. Regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF), regional cerebral blood velocity and regional cerebral blood volume in the canine parietal cortex were measured by Laser-doppler flowmeter. On the 7th day after the initial injection of autogenous blood, subarachnoid haemorrhage (SAH) produced a significant decrease in rCBF (59% of control, p〈0.05) and Hood velocity (48% of control, p〈0.05), with no remarkable change in blood volume (108% of control). Bolus intravenous administration of HA1077 (0.1–0.3 mg/kg) dose-dependently increased the rCBF and blood velocity, without significantly changing the blood volume on Day 7 after SAH. HA1077 improves haemodynamic function manifested by an increase in rCBF and velocity in this SAH model, and may be suitable for the treatment of vasospasm in patients with SAH.
