Notes: Summary: Social structure and sexual size of two populations of Myrmica kotokui were compared. Most of the colonies were polygynous in one population and monogynous in the other. Mean body size of the queens was larger in the monogynous population than in the polygynous population. Although the polygynous population contained many large queens, their wing length was significantly shorter than that of queens in the monogynous population. Some females in the polygynous population were intermorphic between typical workers and queens, while the females of the monogynous population were clearly divided into worker and queen castes without any intermorphic females. The body size of the males showed a large variation and the mean was not significantly different between the two populations.

Notes: Abstract. In adult patients with severe chronic mitral regurgitation, many predictors for estimating postoperative left ventricular systolic function have been proposed. However, none has been defined in children. We analyzed the relationship between such predictors and postoperative left ventricular fractional shortening in children with isolated congenital mitral regurgitation. Eight patients with isolated congenital mitral regurgitation were examined before and after surgery with echocardiography. Fractional shortening, left ventricular end-diastolic and end-systolic dimension indices, and left ventricular end-systolic wall stress/left ventricular end-systolic dimension index in the preoperative status were poorly correlated with postoperative left ventricular fractional shortening. Predictive wall stress, which was calculated from preoperative data of end-diastolic dimension, end-diastolic wall thickness, and diastolic blood pressure, correlated well with postoperative left ventricular fractional shortening (r=−0.90, p= 0.0024). It is important to consider not only myocardial contractility but also postoperative afterload for estimating postoperative left ventricular performance in chronic severe mitral regurgitation.

Notes: Abstract. We reviewed the MR images and pathologic findings of five cases of primary vaginal neoplasms of non-squamous origin. Histologic types consisted one case each of adenocarcinoma, adenosarcoma, melanoma, lymphoma, and neurilemoma. Magnetic resonance imaging was found useful for evaluating the type and the extension of vaginal tumors.

Notes: Abstract High-spin states of148Tb were studied by inbeam γ-ray spectroscopic techniques using141Pr(13C,6n)148Tb and27Al(130Te,9n)148Tb reactions. The level scheme of148Tb was established up to the excitation energy of 11.8MeV. The excitation energy of the high-spin isomer reported previously was revised to be 8.620MeV. The excited states below the isomer could be understood as resulted from the weak couplings of πh11/2 and νf7/2 to those of147Gd and147Tb, respectively.
