    Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Es werden experimentelle Untersuchungen mitgeteilt, die das Ziel hatten, die Wärmeübertragung an fluchtenden Rohrbündeln dadurch zu verbessern, daß die erste Reihe pyramidenförmige Rauhigkeitselemente erhielt. Gemessen wurde die Wärmeübertragung der ersten Reihe, für verschiedene Rohrabstände. Man fand eine kritische Reynolds-ZahlRe c , oberhalb derer die Wärmeübertragung drastisch um 30% bis 50% anstieg, verglichen mit dem glatten Zylinder, wenn auch der Anstieg im Bereich sehr kleiner Abstände, so wieC y /d×C x /d=1,2×1,2, gering blieb. FürRe〉Re c wandert der Ablösepunkt stromab zu Zentriwinkeln von 120° bis 130°, gemessen vom vorderen Staupunkt, wobei der Formwiderstand abnahm.
    Notes: Abstract An experimental investigation has been conducted for exploring a possibility to improve the heat transfer of tube banks of in-line arrangement, in which the first cylinder was roughened with pyramids. Measured were the heat transfer characteristics of the first cylinder for several cylinder spacings. It is found that there exists the critical Reynolds numberRe c , beyond which the heat transfer rate increases drastically by about 30 to 50% as compared with that for the smooth cylinder, though the increasing rate is small for the case of very narrow spacing such asC y /d×C x /d =1.2×1.2. In the region ofRe〉Re c , the separation point shifts downstream to θ=120° to 130° from the forward stagnation point, and it results in the decrease of the form drag.

    Notes: Fourier-transformed infrared attenuated total reflection (FTIR–ATR) spectroscopy was used to study the adsorbates on 6H–SiC(0001) and (0001¯) surfaces after chemical treatments and after heat treatments in hydrogen. We obtained clear absorption bands attributable to hydrides and oxides on the SiC surfaces. The ATR spectroscopy revealed polarity dependencies of Si–H and C–H stretch modes between the 6H–SiC(0001) and (0001¯). The surface Si–H bonds on 6H–SiC(0001) formed by the heat treatment in hydrogen were found to have a quite long life time against air exposure, and the heat treatment in hydrogen also produced a flat (0001¯) surface with ordered surface C–H bonds. The oxidation characteristics of 6H–SiC(0001) and (0001¯) surfaces were also studied, and we discussed the roles of surface treatments using H2O2 solution and H2SO4 solution at elevated temperature. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Hydrides on the 6H-SiC(0001¯) and (0001) surfaces before and after hydrogen annealing were investigated by infrared attenuated total reflection spectroscopy. The absorption bands of CH2 and CH3 were observed from the 6H-SiC(0001¯) and (0001) surfaces before hydrogen annealing. After hydrogen annealing, a sharp C–H stretching vibration attributable to a monohydride appeared on the 6H-SiC(0001¯) surface, in contrast to a sharp Si–H stretching vibration which can be observed on the 6H-SiC(0001) surface. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Der Wärmeübergang bei konstantem Wärmestrom und die Strömung um einen Kreiszylinder mit Stolperdrähten, die bei ± 65° vom vorderen Staupunkt angebracht werden, wurden in dieser Arbeit untersucht. Das strömende Medium war Luft bei Reynolds-Zahlen, definiert mit dem Zylinderdurchmesser, von 1.2×104 bis 5.2×104. Besonders wurde die Wechselwirkung zwischen Wärmeübergang und Strömung im kritischen Bereich untersucht in Bezug auf die statische Druckverteilung um den Zylinder und die mittlere Schwankungsgeschwindigkeit im Totwasser. Es ergibt sich, daß der Wärmeübergang sehr eng mit der Breite der abgelösten Strömung zusammenhängt.
    Notes: Abstract An experimental study was conducted on the heat transfer under the condition of constant heat flux and the flow around a circular cylinder with tripping-wires, which were affixed at ± 65° from the forward stagnation point on the cylinder surface. The testing fluid was air and the Reynolds number Red, based on the cylinder diameter, ranged from 1.2 × 104 to 5.2×104. Especially investigated are the interactions between the heat transfer and the flow in the critical flow state, in relation to the static pressure distribution along the cylinder surface and the mean and turbulent fluctuating velocities in the wake. It is found that the heat transfer from the cylinder to the cross flow is in very close connection with the width of near wake.

    Notes: Abstract Objective: To investigate whether the antioxidative sedatives propofol and thiopental can improve recovery from acute paraquat toxicity in A549 cells and in mice.¶Design: Prospective, controlled, dose-response, in vitro study and prospective, controlled animal study. Setting: A university animal research laboratory.¶Subjects: Established human lung cultured cells and male SPF ICR mice. Interventions: Paraquat-treated (0.2 mM) A549 cells were incubated either with the antioxidative sedatives propofol (0–0.56 mM) or thiopental (0–2.0 mM), or the non-antioxidative sedatives diazepam (0–3.0 mM), midazolam (0–3.0 mM) and ketamine (0–9.0 mM), as well as the antioxidative drugs, trolox (0–2.0 mM), α-tocopherol (0–4.4 mM), antioxidative-processed food (AOB; 0–1.0 mg/ml), superoxide dismutase (SOD; 0 and 3,000 U/ml) and ulinastatin (0 and 50,000 U/ml), for 48 h. Paraquat-treated mice received i. v. injections of 10 mg/kg propofol, 5 mg/kg thiopental, 4.0 mg/kg trolox, 100 mg/kg α-tocopherol, 10 mg/kg AOB or 5,000 U/kg SOD, b. i. d. for 4 days (n = 10 each). Measurements and results: Post-administered propofol and thiopental, as well as the antioxidative drugs, trolox, α-tocopherol and AOB, improved A549 cell survival in vitro. The non-antioxidative sedatives SOD and ulinastatin were not protective. An i. p. injection of 50 mg/kg of paraquat resulted in a survival rate of 40 % in mice at day 6. Propofol, trolox, α-tocopherol and AOB significantly lowered the mortality rate (80 % survival), while thiopental did not.¶Conclusion: Post i. v. injection of propofol is protective against paraquat-induced damage. Propofol can be given during mechanical ventilatory support after paraquat poisoning.

    Notes: Summary A case of adrenoleukodystrophy showing neurological features of olivopontocerebellar atrophy is described. A CT scan demonstrated marked atrophy in both cerebellum and pons. ACTH stimulation produced no rise in the plasma cortisol level but a significant rise in the plasma aldosterone level. The ratios of C26:0 to C22:0 in fatty acids of sphingomyelin from erythrocyte membrane and plasma were increased.

    Notes: Abstract High-spin states of148Tb were studied by inbeam γ-ray spectroscopic techniques using141Pr(13C,6n)148Tb and27Al(130Te,9n)148Tb reactions. The level scheme of148Tb was established up to the excitation energy of 11.8MeV. The excitation energy of the high-spin isomer reported previously was revised to be 8.620MeV. The excited states below the isomer could be understood as resulted from the weak couplings of πh11/2 and νf7/2 to those of147Gd and147Tb, respectively.
