Notes: A model of cw argon ion lasers excited by low-energy (50–200 eV) direct current electron beams at current densities between 1 and 50 A/cm2 has been developed. The electron energy distribution in the electron-beam-created plasma is calculated by numerically solving the Boltzmann equation for electrons. Optical gains, powers, and laser efficiences were computed for the 4765-, 4880-, 4965-, and 4658-A(ring) Ar ii transitions for a wide range of discharge conditions. Laser efficiencies comparable to those of a conventional Ar ii laser (∼3×10−4) are predicted for these laser transitions when electron beam excitation is used.

Notes: Abstract: Measurements of the activities of the two key enzymes in cerebral GABA metabolism—glutamate decarboxylase (GAD) and GABA-transaminase (GABA-T)—were performed in normal rabbits and in rabbits with hepatic encephalopathy due to galactosamine-induced liver failure. Furthermore the uptake of GABA by synaptosomes was studied. Hepatic encephalopathy was associated with a marked decrease in the activity of GAB A-T. This decrease in activity was already apparent in galactosamine-treated rabbits before the onset of hepatic encephalopathy. Sera and serum ultrafiltrates of rabbits with hepatic encephalopathy but not of normal rabbits or of rabbits with uremic encephalopathy were shown to inhibit GABA-T activity in vitro. Cerebral GAD activity and synaptosomal GABA uptake in rabbits with hepatic encephalopathy and in untreated animals were not different. These later findings indicate that hepatic encephalopathy is not associated with alterations of presynaptic GABA nerve terminals in the central nervous system. The demonstration of a decrease in cortical GABA-T activity provides indirect evidence for decreased GABA turnover in the brains of rabbits with hepatic encephalopathy and thus is compatible with augmented GABA-ergic inhibitory neurotransmission contributing to the neural inhibition of hepatic encephalopathy.

Notes: Extractability of total, nonpolar, or polar lipids from five hard red winter (HRW) wheat flours increased linearly with extraction temperature. Any increases in amounts of total extracted lipids, by varying solvent or extraction temperature, were mainly due to increases in the extracted polar lipids. Proper selection of solvent and/or extraction temperature was of major importance for polar lipid extractability. Extractability of lipid-phosphorus increased with temperature more rapidly than extractability of lipid-galactose, and the effect of temperature on the extractability of lipid-galactose was more pronounced with Skellysolve B or benzene than with acetone or 2-propanol. The amounts of polar lipids extracted with 2-propanol by a shaker at 75°C or by a Soxhlet were the most effective in differentiating the HRW flours according to their mixing times. The ratio of nonpolar to polar lipids extracted with petroleum ether or Skellysolve B, which extract free lipids, or the galactose content of free lipids best differentiated the HRW flours according to loaf volume potential.

Notes: Abstract In October 1977 an investigation was initiated of the qualitative and quantitative composition of the fauna of the eelgrass (Zostera marina) beds at Roscoff. Samples were taken in 2 seagrass beds at different tidal levels in order to follow numerical changes in the course of the year. In March 1978 the area of study was struck by the oil slick of the tanker “Amoco Cadiz ”. For this reason sampling has been continued at the same frequency. The tabulated results show clearly that the oil slick had a profound but selective influence on the various animal groups; some of them disappeared while others were apparently unaffected. Rapid recovery of some species has taken place, but re-establishment of other species, particularly the filter feeders has not been observed. The very diverse amphipod fauna has disappeared, and has been replaced by a population ofPherusa fucicola andGammarus locusta; the latter was absent in the year before the oil disaster took place.

Notes: Abstract Selective isolation procedures were carried out on decaying leaves of Nymphoides peltata (Gmel.) O. Kuntze in order to study the pythiaceous fungi (Peronosporales) associated with the decomposition processes. In addition to Pythium marsipium Drechsler and P. pleroticum T. Ito, a number of Pythium species were isolated with filamentous non-swollen sporangia. Under special culture conditions (in water under a day/night rhythm) sexual reproductive structures of P. diclinum Tokunaga and P. apleroticum Tokunaga were also obtained. However, several isolates designated as Pythium ‘F’, remained sterile. Within this group three types could be distinguished according to their temperature-growth relationships. As the species recorded have been found very rarely and only one was represented in the CBS collection, detailed descriptions with short discussions are presented.

Notes: Abstract The genus Apodachlya Pringsheim is revised and restricted to three species, of which descriptions and illustrations are given. On the basis of a study of pure cultures, it is concluded that A. punctata Minden is identical with A. brachynema (Hildebrand) Pringsheim.

Notes: Summary The irreversible neurotoxic action of β-bungarotoxin (β-BuTx) can be prevented by preincubation of the toxin with manoalide, a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agent. Manoalide was also found to inactivate purified phospholipase A2 and thus prevent hydrolysis of phosphatidylcholine. PLA2 is a component found in several neurotoxic venoms and is also a rate limiting enzyme important in phospholipid metabolism and prostaglandin synthesis in man.

Notes: Summary Second generation mice were exposed to normal (50 ppm, Group I) or excess (2000 ppm, Group II) zinc in the maternal diet during gestation and lactation, then weaned and continued on the mother's diet until sacrifice at 8 weeks. Tibia zinc reflected dietary intake. Group II had reduced plasma copper, body weight, and hematocrit; the second coat of hair appeared late and was lighter in color than Group I, possibly as an effect of copper and pigmentation development and hair growth.

Notes: Summary Luffariellolide (2) is a sesterterpene from the Palauan spongeLuffariella sp. that has useful anti-inflammatory properties. In contrast with the irreversible action of manoalide (1) on phospholipase A2, luffariellolide (2) is a slightly less potent but partially reversible PLA2 inhibitor.
