Notizen: The skin of a patient with giant axonal neuropathy was studied by light and electron microscopy. Enlarged melanocytes protruded into the papillary dermis. An increased number of microfilaments (100 A), which accumulated in rounded or irregular clusters was the main pathological feature. Melanosomes and melanisation were normal.A similar increase of microfilaments was seen in axons and Schwann cells of peripheral nerves, fibroblasts and endothelial cells. This suggests that this metabolic, probably inborn and genetic disorder, does not only affect the nervous system but also the whole microfilament system (cytoskeleton).

Notizen: Summary In Macaca nemestrina inoculated intracerebrally by a pin-point injection with a strain of kuru Kupenota (2nd passage), the lesions consisted of spongiosis of neuropile with severe astrocytic hyperplasia, located in the grey matter of cerebral hemispheres (cortex, neostriatum). In all cases, the distribution of lesions was asymmetrical, predominating on the side of injection. These results suggest that kuru agent could be replicate around the injection site, but the influence of the host and/or the strain could not be excluded.

Notizen: Summary A rare case of esthesioneuroepithelioma infiltrating the right frontal lobe is reported in a 41-year-old man. This tumor composed of compact lobules with tubular arrangements, ultrastructurally showed two different cell types, both devoid of neurosecretory granules and reminiscent of neurons and sustentacular cells of the olfactory epithelium. These features are distinguished from those generally observed in olfactory neuroblastomas.

Notizen: Summary We report a morphological study of three cases of infantile hypsarrhythmia. The cerebral cortex lesions consisted of a diffuse neuropile microspongiosis, corresponding ultrastructurally to vacuolized and enlarged neuronal processes, particularly postsynaptic bags. The morphological aspects and the high cell fusion index in one case resemble those described in transmissible subacute spongiform encephalopathies.

Notizen: Summary The authors report the morphology and topography of CNS lesions in experimental kuru (third passage) in the rhesus monkey. The main lesions encountered are spongiosis of the neuropile with neuronal vacuolization, moderate astrocytic gliosis, and slight neuronal depopulation. In all cases, lesions predominated in the grey matter of the cerebral hemispheres (cortex, neostriatum). Lesions were minimal in cerebellum and brain stem. The authors compare their results with these observed in human kuru and experimental kuru of other species of Primates (chimpanzee, spider monkey, marmoset, squirrel monkey).

    Thema: Medizin
Notizen: Summary An ultrastructural study of four pinealomas was carried out to precise eventual specific markers. Dark and clear cells joined with zonulae adherents, extensive and pleiomorphous processes, a complex vacuolar system, and characteristic organelles (lysosome-like structures, clear and dense-core vesicles, vesicle-crowned rodlets and related structures, microtubular sheaves and centriolar derivatives, membranous whorls, fibrous bodies, microtubules, heterogeneous cytoplasmic inclusions) offered a typical pattern. No correlation could be made between the histological and ultrastructural features. The authors stress the ultrastructural similarities between the human tumor cells and the mammalian pineal cells. Pinealomas appeared as a morphological entity distinct from neuronal and astrocytic tumors.

Notizen: Summary A typical case of acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) has been clinically and morphologically studied. This homosexual man whose past history was significant for i.v. drug abuse and sexually transmitted infection presented several opportunistic infections with a profound impairment of cellmediated immunity. Autopsy showed an intense lymphoid depletion, CMV-generalized infection, and a primary large cell immunoblastic lymphoma of the brain. The present case is discussed in the light of recent literature.

Notizen: Summary The authors report two cases of a rare tumor in adults which were inserted on the fornix and caused a frontal syndrome. By light microscopy, the tumors, highly calcified, were composed of small clear cells forming dense areas in a patchy fibrillary stroma. Electron microscopy revealed a striking neuronal differentiation with numerous synapses. These tumors, for which the term neurocytomas was proposed, were compared with the other CNS neuronal tumors described in the literature.

Notizen: Summary Paired twisted filaments (PTF) forming helices are described in tumor cells of three human pine-alomas. Each filament was 8.11±1.55 nm wide. The maximal width of the helix was 16.62±2.62 nm. The periodicity of the constrictions was 26.63±4.49 nm. These characteristics appeared original, suggesting protein, filaments possibly specific of pinealocytes. The similarities and discrepancies between PTF and Alzheimer's paired helical filaments (PHF) are discussed.

Notizen: Abstract Lafora bodies are described in the retina of a 16 year old female who died five years after the onset of a typical familial progressive myoclonus epilepsy which was diagnosed as Lafora disease by brain biopsy and by autopsy findings. The patient was the offspring of consanguinous parents who had three affected siblings out of nine. The fine structure and distribution of Lafora bodies, which represent a specific non-lysosomal cell storage disorder, is reported for the first time in the human retina. The nature of the abnormal material in the Lafora bodies, which are identical to those present in the brain, heart and liver tissues in the same patient and in her brother, is discussed according to their iodide spectrum. In this respect, Lafora disease might be related to the inborn errors of carbohydrate metabolism and its relationship with Type IV Glycogenosis (Anderson's disease) must be verified by further investigations.
