Notes: Abstract The ionization of alkali atoms on incandescent metal surfaces provides a useful means for measuring mass thicknesses of alkali films if the fraction of ionized atoms is known. For this reason a series of systematic measurements was initiated. The technical advance of this new method is the independent measuring of the number of incident atoms and the number of ionized atoms, the former by means of an ultra high vacuum microbalance. Previous measurements have shown that potassium is nearly completely ionized on hot tungsten and platinum surfaces, the ionization coefficients being resp.β=0.97 for K/W andβ=0.99 for K/Pt. The present investigation gave for sodium on a hot Pt-surface a maximum ionization-coefficient ofβ=0.86 at a temperature of 1250 °K, whereas only 0.5 to 2% of Na-atoms are ionized on a W-surface between 1200 and 1700 °K. This ionization and its dependence on temperature are in accord with the Saha-Langmuir-equation.

Notes: Summary 200 children of 2 to 171/2 years of age who have had a meningococcal meningitis or -sepsis in 1955–1966 have been reexamined. The patients were submitted to an extensive neurological examination with electroencephalography and echoencephalography and a Kramer-intelligencetest. 39,5% of the patients were found to be completely cured, 35% had mild, 19,5% had severe residual damage. With increasing age of the children the severe damage lessened. In 6% of the patients a preexistent cerebral damage which was aggravated by the meningitis could not be ruled out. Letality numbers during this time could not be established as the surviving patients came out of distant areas.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary A case of a 5 year old girl with glykogen storage disease and Fanconi syndrome is described. The multitude of pathological findings suggests the pathogenetic role of more than one enzyme defect. This case was characterized by dwarfism with hepatomegaly, increased lipid- and glykogen content and decreased glucose-6-phosphatase of the liver, hypoglucosemia with glucolability and galactosemia with normal diet, hyperlacticacidemia and hyperpyruvatemia, hyperlipidemia, a compensated metabolic acidosis, vit. D-resistant hypophosphatemic rickets with increased serum alkaline phosphatase, hyperphosphaturia, mild proteinuria, severe mellituria and hyperaminoaciduria. After galactose given orally not only an increase of lactate and pyruvate could be observed but also a long lasting pronounced increase in blood galactose, thus demonstrating an impaired galactose utilization. There was also evidence of increased alcohol tolerance of the patient.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary The serum ferments SDH, MDH, LDH and GIDH have been analyzed in 44 suckling babies who were ill with dyspepsia or toxicosis. The first test was made when they came to the clinic or on the next morning, and the second test after the subsidence of dyspepsia. In the beginning of the enteritis mostly a rise of the activity of all ferments was found, which could not be proved after the subsidence of the illness. It is possible that this rise of the ferment activity is the sequel of a slight fatty degeneration of liver cells. Especially in toxicosis distinct ferment rises could be found.

Notes: Abstract The surface tension of highly purified, liquid alkali metals and its temperature dependence have been measured under ultra-high-vacuum conditions. The results obtained for sodium agree with those ofAddison andTaylor as well as with theoretical values given byStratton andZadumkin, whereas the results on K, Rb and Cs are different from all values obtained hitherto by others. The temperature dependence of surface tension of all alkalis follows theoretical predictions. There is no observable influence of Ar and O2 on the surface tension up to 10−3 Torr.
