Notes: Abstract A rapid-frequency-scan dye laser was developed for the measurement of the velocity-distribution functions of impurity atoms sputtered due to the high-temperature plasma-surface interaction. In order to confirm the effectiveness of this rapid-scan technique, measurements of the Doppler profiles of Fe atoms sputtered by Ar ion-beam bombardment with energy 3 keV were performed. A scanning range of more than 40 pm at λ ≈300 nm was obtained with a spectral bandwidth of 1.5 ∼2 pm and good linearity. Doppler profiles were determined in various scattering conditions, and excellent performance of this technique was demonstrated. The distortion error caused by line saturation was analytically discussed, and it is shown that the effect of this error is not so serious (less than 10%) even for highly saturated excitation.

Notes: Abstract Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) diversity was investigated in 38 isolants ofCladosporium carrionii in Africa (3 isolants), Australia (10), China (15) and Venezuela (10).C. carrionii was classified into 4 mtDNA types (Type I to Type IV) based on the restriction patterns withMspI,Sau3AI andHaeIII. All the 15 strains in China and 9 of 10 strains in Venezuela showed Type I, while all the 10 strains in Australia showed Type II. These results suggested a correlation between the mtDNA types and geographic origin.

Notes: Abstract Restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) was examined in 36 isolates ofExophiala spinifera (8 isolates from Brazil, 9 from China, 15 from Columbia, 1 from the United States and 2 from Venezuela).E. spinifera isolates displayed a high degree of mtDNA diversity in RFLP patterns and were clustered into six genetically heterogeneous groups (Group 1 through Group 6). Isolates of Group 2 including the type strain seemed to have a worldwide distribution. RFLP patterns ofE. spinifera were also distinct from those of other dematiaceous fungi, such asE. jeanselmei, E. moniliae, E. dermatitidis, Fonsecaea pedrosoi, Cladosporium carrionii andPhialophora verrucosa. These results indicate thatE. spinifera may be a taxonomic complex and that RFLP patterns will be useful in the identification, typing and epidemiology of theE. spinifera variants.

Notes: Abstract To investigate the relationship between the emphysematous changes and bronchodilator responses in patients with chronic airflow obstruction (CAO), we studied the correlation between bronchodilator response to 10 mg inhaled metaproterenol and the extent of emphysema, using selective alveolobronchogram (SAB). Fifty-one patients with CAO were classified into 3 groups by the extent of emphysematous changes detected by SAB. In group 1, no or mild emphysematous change was observed on SAB (n = 9); in group 2, there were significant emphysematous changes but the involved area was less than 75% (n = 17); in group 3, emphysematous change was extensive and covered more than 75% (n = 25). The post-bronchodilator forced expiratory volume in 1 sec (FEV1) of patients in group 3 was significantly lower than in groups 1 and 2. The mean value of changes of FEV1 as a percentage of predicted FEV1 of patients in group 3 was significantly lower than in groups 1 and 2. These results indicated that the extent of emphysematous change correlated positively with the severity of fixed air-flow obstruction, and negatively with the bronchodilator response.
