    Notes: Summary Second generation mice were exposed to normal (50 ppm, Group I) or excess (2000 ppm, Group II) zinc in the maternal diet during gestation and lactation, then weaned and continued on the mother's diet until sacrifice at 8 weeks. Tibia zinc reflected dietary intake. Group II had reduced plasma copper, body weight, and hematocrit; the second coat of hair appeared late and was lighter in color than Group I, possibly as an effect of copper and pigmentation development and hair growth.

    Notes: Summary Autoantibodies to cardiolipin and intermediate filaments have both been reported with increased frequency in rheumatoid arthritis. We evaluated the frequency, pathological significance, and diagnostic relevance of these autoantibodies in a series of 124 patients and controls. We studied 81 patients with rheumatoid arthritis, 23 with osteoarthritis, and 20 normals. Antibodies to cardiolipin were measured by an ELISA method and antibodies to intermediate filaments were measured by indirect immunofluorescence using HEp2 cells. Antibodies to cardiolipin were present in 58% of rheumatoid patients and antibodies to intermediate filaments were present in 55% rheumatoid patients. They were both predominantly of IgM class, and were more frequent than in normal or osteoarthritic controls. Correlating levels of both these auto-antibodies to clinical and laboratory measures of disease activity such as Ritchie articular index and C-reactive protein level showed that no consistent relationships existed. They were not related to other auto-antibodies such as rheumatoid factors and antinuclear antibodies, nor to each other. These results show that antibodies to cardiolipin and intermediate filaments in rheumatoid arthritis are of no diagnostic value, they are not related to disease activity, and have no relationship to other autoimmune disturbances. We suggest that several pathological mechanisms must be involved in the development of auto-antibodies in rheumatoid arthritis.

    Notes: An aflatoxin-producing isolate of Aspergillus flavus was found to be a consistent producer of aflatoxin on all substrates which supported the growth of the mold. In competition with six other selected molds, this isolate was dominant except with one species of Penicillium. Aflatoxin production was parallel to the extent of A. flavus growth whether effected by substrate or competition.

    Notes: A metabolic model of the biological phosphorus removal process has been developed and validated previously for complex conversions during the process under anaerobic and aerobic conditions at different growth rates in sequencing batch reactors in steady state. For additional validation of the metabolic model, the model was applied to the dynamic conditions which occur during the start-up phase of the biological P removal in the presence and absence of non-polyP heterotrophic microorganisms. In a laboratory scale sequencing batch reactor, experiments were performed to examine the enrichment of the population with polyphosphate organisms during the start-up and the subsequent shift from non-polyP, heterotrophic organisms to polyP organisms in the sludge. The effect of different influent loading patterns for acetate and phosphate was studied. In these experiments, the maximal growth rate of the polyP organisms and the behavior of the internal storage compounds could be derived. The metabolic model was capable of describing the experimental results, without the need to adjust the kinetic or stoichiometric parameters obtained under steady state conditions. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
