Notizen: Summary We studied five cases of central nervous system neuronal tumor, one gangliocytoma and four gangliogliomas, both ultrastructurally and immuno-histochemically, using antibodies to neuroendocrine markers including tyrosine hydroxylase (TH), serotonin (5HT), somatostatin (SOM), met-enkephalin (MEK), leu-enkephalin (LEK), substance P (SP), gastrin, vasopressin, oxytocin, vasoactive intestinal polypeptide, adrenocorticotropic hormone and calcitonin. In all cases, the presence of dense-core vesicles (60–250 nm) in the neuronal elements was the characteristic ultrastructural finding. Synapses were observed in two cases. Immunohistochemically, variable numbers of neuronal cells showed positive staining for SOM in five cases, TH, MEK and LEK in three cases, and 5HT and SP in one case each. The others were negative. Positive immunoreactivity for multiple markers was shown in all cases. SOM, TH, 5HT and SP were present in the small- to medium-sized cells, while MEK and LEK were almost exclusively confined to the large cells. Our study clearly indicated that these tumors contained neuronal cells which were not homogeneous with regard to neuroendocrine markers.

Notizen: Summary The origins of calcitonin gene-related peptide immunoreactive (CGRPI) fibers in the cochlea were examined in rats. Parasagittal transection of the brain just medial to the principal sensory trigeminal nucleus resulted in the ipsilateral disappearance of CGRPI fibers in the cochlea, indicating that the origins of these fibers lie in the central nervous system. Next, we used a highly sensitive method combining retrograde tracing and immunohistochemistry to identify the origins of the CGRPI fibers in the cochlea. After injection of biotin-wheat germ agglutinin (b-WGA) into the cochlea, CGRPI neurons in the ipsilateral lateral superior olivary nucleus also contained b-WGA granules. These findings indicated tht CGRPI efferent fibers are major components of the olivocochlear bundle.

Notizen: Summary Two cases of the anterior inferior cerebellar arteries originating from the cavernous and precavernous segments of the internal carotid artery are reported. In one case the course of the anomalous artery was confirmed by autopsy. This anomalous artery is considered to be a variant of persistent primitive trigeminal artery. The clinical significance is discussed briefly.

Notizen: Summary The occurrence of urotensin I (UI)-like immunoreactivity is demonstrated in the midgut of the cricket Gryllus bimaculatus and the cockroach Periplaneta americana. The immunoreactivity is restricted to endocrine cells dispersed in the epithelium of the midgut. The UI-positive endocrine cells are numerous in the cricket, but much fewer in the cockroach. These UI-positive cells are different from bovine pancreatic polypeptide (BPP)-immunoreactive cells which represent a dominant cell type in the midgut of both insects. This study suggests the possibility that the neuropeptide UI or a closely related substance may also occur in animals other than fishes.

Notizen: Summary The localization of mitochondrial (m-) and cytosolic (c-) aspartate aminotransferase (AAT) was examined in the vestibular ganglion neurons and sensory cells in the vestibular end-organs of rats by an indirect immunohistochemical method using antibodies specific for m- and c-AAT. Neurons in the vestibular ganglion were stained by both m- and c-AAT antibodies, but the vestibular sensory cells exhibited only m-AAT-like immunoreactivity and were not labeled by c-AAT. These findings suggested that aspartate is a neurotransmitter in the hair cells of the vestibular end-organs.
