Description / Table of Contents:
Summary The clinical, histological and cytogenetic findings of 9 patients 19–28 years after Thorotrast administration are presented. The patients complaints were fatigue and epigastric distress. One patient had lymphosarcomatosis. In 4 patients the only hematologic finding was a low red blood cell count. In 6 patients a needle biopsy of the liver was performed. In all of them Thorotrast was detectable on microscopic and autoradiographic examination. Only two patients had cellular infiltration and fibrosis of the liver. In all of 4 bone marrow biopsies Thorotrast was detectable. Twice a significant increase of fatty marrow was seen. Lymphocyte cultures from peripheral blood showed abnormal chromosomes in all of the 9 patients, while there were no chromosomal abnormalities in bone marrow cells among the 4 patients examined. Possible explanations for this difference between peripheral and bone marrow cells are discussed.
Notes:
