Notes: Abstract Mitochondria from Vicia faba L. exhibit two pathways for the oxidation of endogenous NADH. One pathway is rotenone-sensitive and includes three phosphorylation sites, the other one is rotenone-insensitive and by-passes site I. This by-pass is located in the area of flavoproteins, but several lines of evidence suggest that the rotenone-insensitive oxidation of matrix-NADH is not mediated by the external NADH dehydrogenase. With saturating substrate concentrations the two pathways are superimposed in state 3 while in state 4 the electrons are transferred only via the by-pass. The rotenone-resistant electron flux is obviously regulated from the substrate side. We suggest that the function of the by-pass is to regulate the NADH/NAD+ ratio of the matrix space.

Notes: Abstract 1. Respiration rates of broad-bean (Vicia faba) mitochondria were studied as a function of temperature. Arrhenius plots of all membrane-bound enzymes, as obtained with saturating substrate concentrations, revealed a break in the lower temperature range. That break was considered to indicate a phase transition of membrane phospholipids, characteristic for chilling-sensitive plants. A second discontinuity at 30°C occurred only with activities linked to energy conservation. — 2. The activation energies for the oxidation of NAD+-linked substrates differ between states 3 and 4. State 3 respiration of NAD+-linked substrates is the result a superimposition of two branches of electron transport, which can be separated by different sensibilities to rotenone. A characteristic temperature dependency of the respiratory control, as well as a shift of the low temperature break in the Arrhenius plot toward a higher temperature after state 4 to state 3 transition, are calculated to be caused by the superimposition of the two branches. — 3. The temperature dependency of the oxidation of extra-mitochondrial NADH and of succinate differs remarkably from that of the oxidation of matrix-NADH. It has been concluded that the rotenone-resistant oxidation of matrix-NADH and the oxidation of external NADH are mediated via different pathways with individual regulation sites.

Notes: Abstract To investigate the value of the extrafoveal pattern electroretinogram for evaluation of local retinal defects, electroretinographic responses to contrast reversal stimulation were recorded at various locations in the central and midperipheral retina. Normal values were established in 20 eyes, and spatial selectivity at different retinal eccentricities was determined in four eyes. The response amplitude was found to decrease steeply from the fovea until about 12° eccentricity and to decline only slowly thereafter. For central stimulation a clear attenuation for coarser patterns was observed. At 20° and at 30° eccentricity the spatial tuning function exhibited a bandpass characteristic, with the maximum amplitude shifting to lower spatial frequencies. Despite the relatively low peripheral amplitudes a satisfactory signal to noise ratio of the second harmonic responses can be obtained by Fourier analysis, which improves clinical applicability. The comparison of sensitivity in the upper and lower retina revealed a considerable asymmetry, with responses in the upper retina approximately 20% higher. No significant difference, however, was found when the temporal or nasal retina was stimulated. The reproducibility of these results is high enough to encourage clinical studies. A case of retinal venous branch occlusion exemplifies the applicability of this technique in eccentric fundus lesions.

Notes: Summary The report presents a transluminal angioplasty (PTCA) of a severe stenosis of the left anterior descending artery (LAD) behind the anastomosis; the internal toracic artery (ITA) graft was used as a conduit. Before and after the PTCA the changing of velocity flow patterns under rest and stress conditions with a handgrip-maneuver were measured with a noninvasive transthoracic ultrasound Doppler system. The mean diastolic velocity, which represent coronary perfusion through the ITA graft, increased after successful PTCA at rest and under stress conditions. An additional increasing of the mean diastolic velocity at rest and under stress conditions was seen after six months before the catheterization proposing no signs of restenosis. For this reason the vessel could be classified prospectively patent. This could be confirmed during coronary angiography. We also present a review of the published reports concerning PTCA of ITA grafts and PTCA of the native vessel using the ITA as a conduit. In this review 286 cardiac interventions on 273 patients with a primary rate of success of 87% could be counted, the documented rate of complication was approximately 1%. The PTCA in ITA grafts or of the native vessel via ITA grafts, respectively, represent an alternative to reoperation. The ultrasound-duplex measurements are gaining an increasing significance for the noninvasive patency rate and post-interventional monitoring of the long-term PTCA result. With the augmentation of the ITA as a coronary bypass and expected increase of postoperative interventions, a noninvasive tool is necessary.

Description / Table of Contents: I.R.-Spectroscopic Investigation of the Interaction between Ni-containing Y-Zeolites and Carbon MonoxideBy the interaction of CO with reduced NiNaY or NiHY samples adsorbed CO on Ni2+ (2 215 cm-1) and on Ni+ (2 085 and 2 095 cm-1, respectively) and two species of adsorbed Ni(CO)4 are formed. Ni(CO)4 is produced in a slow, reversible reaction. Both species are in an equilibrium which is influenced by the acidity of the samples.
