    Notes: Abstract The extent to which the appearances of nitrite reductase (NIR; EC 1.7.7.1) and glutamine synthetase (GS; EC 6.3.1.2) are coordinated was studied in mustard (Sinapis alba L.) seedlings. It was established by immunotitration that the increased activities of NIR and GS in the presence of light and nitrate can be attributed to the de-novo synthesis of enzyme protein. The bulk of the NIR and GS was found in the developing cotyledons. In the absence of nitrate in the growth medium there was no coordinate appearance of NIR and GS. While light strongly stimulated the appearance of GS, the level of NIR was hardly affected and remained low. On the other hand, in the presence of nitrate in the medium the appearances of NIR and GS were strictly coordinated, the GS level being considerably above that of NIR. It is argued that phytochrome-controlled synthesis of GS in the absence of nitrate is part of the mechanism to reassimilate ammonium liberated during proteolysis of storage protein and metabolism of the resulting amino acids, whereas the strictly coordinated synthesis in the presence of light and nitrate indicates the dominance of nitrate assimilation under these circumstances. The fact that the level of GS was always considerably above that of NIR appears to be a safety measure to prevent ammonium accumulation.

    Notes: Summary Various endocrine and metabolic disturbances associated with long standing uremia persist after kidney transplantation or arise from the use of immunosuppressive drugs. Hyperlipidemia for long time being implicated as the cause of corticosteroids is also observed in renal transplant recipients treated with cyclosporin A monotherapy. After conversion from cyclosporin to azathioprine serum cholesterol and triglyceride concentration fall, and elevation of LDL-cholesterol may also be reversed. There is a tendency for higher HDL-cholesterol in azathioprine and prednisolone treated transplant patients. Those patients who are at risk for clinically significant cholesterol elevations can be predicted by their pretransplant lipid levels, specifically the LDL-fraction. Risk-benefit ratio of conversion and of treatment with lipid-lowering drugs, especially with lovastatin, should be carefully examined, also in view of glucose intolerance. Higher incidence of diabetes mellitus requiring insulin therapy in cyclosporin treated transplant recipients has been reported. Cyclosporin may cause toxic effects on pancreatic beta-cells resulting in inhibition of insulin secretion. High doses of cyclosporin induce inhibition of glycogen synthesis in rat liver. Glucose intolerance is reversible after reduction of cyclosporin dose or conversion to azathioprine. Therefore glucose metabolism in kidney transplant recipients treated with cyclosporin should be carefully followed. Immunosuppressive therapy may affect reproductive function, arachidonate metabolism and renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system as well as posttransplant calcium and phophate metabolism. Endocrine and metabolic abnormalities are associated with long standing uremia. After successful kidney transplantation several observations are normalized but further complications arise from the use of immunosuppressive drugs. The present paper reviews various endocrine and metabolic disturbances described following renal transplantation.

    Notes: Abstract Investigations were carried out by means of an autologous, heterotopic model for kidney transplantation applied to dogs. Duration of cold ischemia was 48 h. Four experimental groups were arranged. During the first 20 min following revitalization of the transplanted kidney, group 1 (HTK solution/80 cm perfusion height) showed a significant glomerular and tubular malfunction. In group 2 (HTK solution/120 cm perfusion height), only four urinary proteins with molecular weights of 25 kDa, 67 kDa, 100 kDa and 〉100 kDa were found. The excretion of higher molecular proteins receded over the 20-min period of observation. In both group 3 (HTK/aspartate solution) and group 4 (HTK/tryptophan solution) the quantity of excreted glomerular and tubular protein was well above that of group 2. As opposed to the “Tryptophan” group, a complete restoration of renal function was observed in the “Aspartate” group after 4 weeks. In general, the “standard” HTK protective solution delivered with 120 cm perfusion pressure gave the most favorable results, with the lowest levels of proteinuria and a satisfactory recovery of renal function after revitalization.

    Description / Table of Contents: Deposition of conductive and nonconductive hard coatings on metallic and ceramic materials by RF-PA-CVDConductive titanium nitride and nonconductive aluminium oxide layers were deposited on conductive and nonconductive substrates by a RF-PA-CVD process. The influence of substrate material, pressure, plasma power and the components of the gas mixture on the layer properties was investigated.TiN coatings with a homogeneous structure could be deposited by using TiCl4 as precursor. The properties of the layer are strongly influenced by the substrate material. An increasing pressure causes a faster deposition rate and a higher chlorine content. A lower chlorine content and at the same time a faster deposition rate can be achieved by increasing the r.f. power.Aluminium and aluminium oxide layers could be deposited on steel and Si3N4 substrates by using AlCl3 as precursor in dependence on the CO2 content in gas mixture. Higher CO2 content facilitates the deposition of aluminium oxide.
    Notes: Mit einem Hochfrequenz-Plasma-CVD-Verfahren wurden elektrisch leitende TiN-Schichten und nichtleitende Al2O3-Schichten auf leitende wie nichtleitende Substrate aufgebracht. Der Einfluß des Grundwerkstoffes sowie der Versuchsparameter Druck, Plasmaleistung und Prozeßgaszusammensetzung auf die Schichteigenschaften wurde untersucht.Mit TiCl4 als Precursor konnten TiN-Schichten mit einem homogenen Schichtaufbau hergestellt werden. Die Schichteigenschaften sind deutlich vom Grundwerkstoff abhängig. Eine Steigerung des Systemdruckes hat einen Anstieg der Abscheiderate und des Chlorgehaltes zur Folge. Eine Erhöhung der Plasmaleistung führt zur Senkung des Chlorgehaltes bei leicht gesteigerter Abscheiderate.Mit AlCl3 als Spendermedium konnten in Abhängigkeit vom CO2-Prozeßgasanteil Aluminium- oder Aluminiumoxidschichten auf Stahl- und Si3N4-Substraten abgeschieden werden. Höhere CO2-Anteile begünstigen die Abscheidung von Aluminiumoxid.

    Description / Table of Contents: Summary Anosognosia for hemiplegia (AHP), i. e., unawareness of motor deficits and associated disorders, has been frequently reported, predominantly following right hemispheric lesions. To a smaller extent, there are case reports of patients who give accounts of a feeling of strangeness concerning the contralesional limbs and sometimes attribute them to other persons. This “positive-variant” of AHP has been labeled “somatoparaphrenia” (SP). We report a case of SP in a 85-year-old woman with infarction of the right posterior cerebral artery and posterior parts of the right thalamus. She showed AHP and described her left side alternatively as her handicapped nephew and a clumsy cat. Misidentification of her daughter also occurred. With respect to the literature the predominant neuroanatomical features involved are lesions including right parietal cortex and/or posterior parts of the thalamus. Theories concerning the pathogenesis of this phenomenon comprise a denial of the illness, a lack of awareness caused by reduced sensory feedback and neglect, a misidentification or disturbance of the active discovery process considered necessary for realizing one's disorder.
    Notes: Zusammenfassung Anosognosie für Hemiplegie (AHP) im Sinne einer mangelnden Bewusstheit einer Hemiparese und assoziierter Störungen ist in Folge überwiegend rechtshemisphärischer Läsionen ein häufigeres Phänomen. Seltener wird kasuistisch über Patienten berichtet, die zusätzlich ein Fremdheitsgefühl kontraläsioneller Körperteile angeben und sie z. B. anderen Personen zuschreiben. Diese “Plusvariante” der AHP wird als Somatoparaphrenie (SP) bezeichnet. Wir schildern den Fall einer 85-jährigen Frau, die nach einem rechtshemisphärischen Infarkt der A. cerebri posterior und posteriorer Anteile des Thalamus eine SP entwickelte. Bei bestehender AHP äußerte sie abwechselnd, ihre linke Körperseite sei ihr körperbehinderter Neffe oder eine ungeschickte Katze. Passager traten auch Fehlidentifikationen der Tochter auf. In der Literatur werden überwiegend Läsionen unter Einschluss des rechten parietalen Kortex und/oder des rechten posterioren Thalamus angegeben. Erklärungstheorien umfassen u. a. psychodynamische Ansätze im Sinne einer Krankheitsverdrängung, ein Wahrnehmungsdefizit durch einen mangelnden sensorischen Feedback und Neglekt, eine Fehlidentifikation, sowie eine Beeinträchtigung eines zur Bewusstwerdung körperlicher Störungen notwendigen aktiven Aufdeckungsprozesses.
