Notes: In high-power AlGaAs window structure lasers with a window grown on facets (WGF) structure, dependence of window effects on Al content of the window layer is examined. When the Al content of the window layer is more than that of the cladding layer, the window effects are found. But, in other cases, the window effects do not occur. A calculation of a carrier leakage from the active layer to the window layer is performed. From the result, we deduce that the reduction of the window effects is caused by the carrier leakage. In the WGF laser with the confirmed window effects, a maximum output power of 350 mW is achieved and highly reliable operation under 100 mW at 50 °C beyond 10000 h is attained.

Notes: Soft-magnetic properties of Fe/Al compositionally modulated multilayer films prepared in the low argon pressure of 2 mTorr with double target dc magnetron sputtering have been studied. Characteristic x-ray diffraction peaks corresponding to artificial structure on [Fe(4–50 A(ring))/Al(8 A(ring))]150 multilayer films were observed. Maintaining a constant Al layer thickness of 8 A(ring), the coercivity in the hard axis rapidly decreases from 50 Oe to 〈1 Oe as the Fe layer thickness increases from 4 to 24 A(ring). When the Fe/Al thickness ratio is around 3, minimum coercivity was obtained. In the region of bilayer thickness ratio δFe/δAl 〈 3.0, the Ms per Fe unit volume decreases with decreasing δFe/δAl. The higher resistivity was obtained in the films of δFe/δAl 〈 3.0, and resistivity decreases as δFe/δAl increases. The internal film stress also decreases as δFe/δAl increases. The [Fe(20 A(ring))/Al(8 A(ring))]150 multilayer film exhibited a low coercivity 0.5 Oe, a high saturation magnetization 1210 emu/cm3, and a high resistivity 119 μΩ cm.

Notes: MnAl thin films with additives were prepared by dc magnetron sputtering. The ferromagnetic τ phase was obtained in the composition of Mn60Al40, which is Mn rich by 6 at. % as compared with the τ-phase bulk one. Excess Mn atoms are considered to occupy the Al site and cause the reduction in saturation magnetization Ms to one-fourth of the bulk one because of their antiparallel spin orientation. We tried to add Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, and Ag separately to replace the antiparallelly oriented Mn atoms in order to increase Ms. A few atomic percent additions of Fe, Co, Ni, and Cu brought 1.7–2.5 times the increase in Ms (i.e., 200–300 G), with the increase of Hc as well except that with the Cu addition. Further addition brought a sharp decrease in Hc. Different types of crystal orientation were observed regarding the film thickness and the kind of additives. For a τ-phase film thinner than 0.3 μm, (111) orientation was observed in every additive. In this case the easy magnetization axis, which is the c axis in the tetragonal structure, is neither in the film plane nor normal to the film plane. Consequently, magnetically isotropic films were obtained. For thicker ones than 0.3 μm, the addition of elements with an atomic radius smaller than that of Mn (i.e., Ni, Co, Fe) directed (110) to the normal plane, and therefore longitudinally magnetically oriented films were obtained. The crystallographic and magnetic properties as a function of anneal temperature were also evaluated and found practically to be invariable with the temperature under 250 °C.

Notes: Molecular-dynamics simulations of liquid methanol have been carried out at two temperatures (T=300 and 200 K) to investigate the dynamics of hydrogen bonding. The mean lifetime of hydrogen bonds (defined in terms of a time-averaged pair energy) is calculated and found to be 5–7 ps at 300 K, through the results depend on the averaging time used in the hydrogen bond definition. At 200 K the lifetime becomes much longer, by one order of magnitude or more. A bonding state is defined for each molecule according to the number of hydrogen bonds, and the mean lifetime of the states and the rate constants of transition between states are calculated. Molecules with two hydrogen bonds have much longer lifetimes than expected from the assumption that forming and breaking of hydrogen bonds occur randomly. Bonding autocorrelation and state autocorrelation functions are calculated, which enable us to have another definition of lifetimes and to discuss the way in which local diffusion occurs near molecules.

Notes: A largely undocumented region of eclogite associated with a thick blueschist unit occurs in the Kotsu area of the Sanbagawa belt. The composition of coexisting garnet and omphacite suggests that the Kotsu eclogite formed at peak temperatures of around 600 °C synchronous with a penetrative deformation (D1). There are local significant differences in oxygen fugacity of the eclogite reflected in mineral chemistries. The peak pressure is constrained to lie between 14 and 25 kbar by microstructural evidence for the stability of paragonite throughout the history recorded by the eclogite, and the composition of omphacite in associated eclogite facies pelitic schist. Application of garnet-phengite-omphacite geobarometry gives metamorphic pressures around 20 kbar. Retrograde metamorphism associated with penetrative deformation (D2) is in the greenschist facies. The composition of syn-D2 amphibole in hematite-bearing basic schist and the nature of the calcium carbonate phase suggest that the retrograde P–T path was not associated with a significant increase or decrease in the ratio of P–T conditions following the peak of metamorphism. This P–T path contrasts with the open clockwise path derived from eclogite of the Besshi area. The development of distinct P–T paths in different parts of the Sanbagawa belt shows the shape of the P–T path is not primarily controlled by tectonic setting, but by internal factors such as geometry of metamorphic units and exhumation rates.

Notes: Luminescence spectra and their variation with temperature have been investigated for solid films of poly(methylphenylsilane) and its branched analogs. Introduction of branching points to the polymers enhances the broad luminescence band in the visible region while suppressing the sharp UV luminescence band due to the resonant recombination of the exciton. The intensity of the visible luminescence is observed to keep on increasing with decreasing temperature in contrast with the nearly temperature-independent intensity of the resonant luminescence. The behavior is interpreted in terms of phonon-assisted tunneling between luminescence centers and nonradiative ones. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The magnetic properties of a SmCo layer on a Cr underlayer, which was prepared by various Ar gas pressure (PAr), were studied. A single line appeared in each X-ray diffraction diagram and its intensity became strong when PAr was decreased from 1.06 to 0.13 Pa. The microstructure observed by using atomic force microscopy showed that the surface morphological structure of Cr underlayers depended on PAr and the surface of the Cr underlayer became smoother as PAr was decreased, while the surface and the grain of the SmCo layer on the Cr underlayer were independent of PAr. The grain size of SmCo layers was as small as 30 nm with the surface roughness of about 1 nm. The coercivity, the squareness ratio, and the coercivity squareness ratio of the SmCo layer on the Cr underlayer prepared at 0.13 Pa were 155 kA/m, 0.92 and 0.92, respectively. Those values suggest that an easy axis of magnetization for the SmCo layer is in plane and the switching field distribution is very small. Although the crystal structure of the SmCo layer has not been clarified yet, it was found that the magnetic properties of SmCo layers can be controlled by the crystal structure of the Cr underlayer and SmCo/Cr bilayer films are promising materials for the ultrahigh density recording media. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Hexagonal strontium-ferrite (SrM) thin films were deposited by sputtering with the target composition ratio N (Fe/Sr) in the range of 8–14. The discrepancy of the composition ratio between the films and the target was found and the deposited films were in Fe-rich. In the x-ray diffraction diagram, the observed diffraction lines varied with the composition of the target and preferential c-axis orientation can be observed in the film prepared with the target, where the composition N is 10. The grain shape as well as size was found to be independent of N. The magnetic easy axis was normal to the plane. The maximum saturation magnetization and coercivity in the perpendicular direction were about 300 emu/cc and 3.5 kOe, respectively, when the film was prepared with the target with N of 8. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We have carried out at 4-K spin-echo studies (of 55Mn, 63Cu) on sputtered Heusler alloy (Cu2MnAl) films with substrate temperature Ts in the range of 50–300 °C in order to obtain microscopic information on the magnetic structure. For Ts =60 °C a very broad spectrum is obtained, revealing incomplete (disordered) formation of Cu2MnAl. For Ts =158, 167, 170, and 210 °C, well-defined spectra are observed with Mn at 227 MHz and Cu at 241 and 259 MHz, respectively. Signal intensity studies reveal a maximum for Ts =167 °C in general agreement with the magnetization results of Morisako, Matsumoto, and Naoe. The signal frequencies are also in agreement with those obtained for the bulk alloy. For Ts =300 °C, the spectrum is broadened but the signal frequencies of Mn and Cu remain practically the same. This spectrum is also quantitatively different from that observed for the film with Ts=60 °C, where a low-frequency tail is observed. The effect of post-annealing the films is also presented.
