Notes: A network of deep seismic refraction profiles in Northern Germany consisting of parts of the European Geotraverse (EGT) and additional new Unes is interpreted. The most striking result is the proof of an approximately 10 km thick high-velocity layer in the lower crust. Its P-wave velocity of 6.9-7.5 km s−1 is typical for shield crusts or lower crust in extensional environments intruded by mafic magma. The layer is observed in an area of roughly 150 × 180 km north of the Elbe river and seems to continue north-east, at least up to the Caledonian deformation front at the southern edge of the Ringkøbing-Fyn High. It correlates spatially with an area of high positive gravity anomalies. Here, a Moho topography of several kilometres, which had already been postulated on the basis of gravity inversions and sporadic near-vertical PMP reflections, could be confirmed by the interpretation of seismic wide-angle records. The termination of the high-velocity lower crust at the Lower Elbe Lineament, which strikes parallel to the Teisseyre-Tornquist Zone, contributes to its definition as a major lineament in the context of central European tectonics.

Notes: We modified Dohr's method and were able to establish trends of crustal reflectivity distribution. Four main types of crustal reflectivity-depth histograms could be distinguished. Dohr's method was based on line drawings from which the total length of reflections was calculated for time-distance frames along the profile. In this paper we present a new method to derive such histograms automatically from the final stack tapes. This allows an objective comparison of deep reflection seismograms from different crustal units and from different research groups. It is shown that our energy histograms are consistent with earlier manually produced histograms and that the previous results can be reproduced. First applications to DEKORP and KTB data in Germany are presented.

Notes: Within the DEKORP project (DEKORP: Deutsches Kontinentales Reflexionsseismisches Programm) a joint deep seismic reflection venture with the BELCORP (Belgian Continental Reflection Seismic Programme) group of the Belgian Geological Survey was carried out in 1987 across the Rhenish Massif, a part of the mid-European Variscides. This orogenic belt developed in the Upper Devonian/Carboniferous. Mostly Devonian rocks crop out at the surface. The Rhenish Massif is bordered by two sedimentary troughs: the sub-Variscan Foredeep in the north and the Permo-Carboniferous Saar-Nahe Basin in the south. In the east-west direction it is subdivided by the axial depression of the Eifel Nord-Süd Zone. The aim of the survey which totals almost 220 km of seismic profiling, was to investigate the crustal structure of the western part of the Rhenish Massif and to compare it with the line DEKORP 2-N which crosses the eastern portion of the massif. The results indicate the presence of NW-vergent tectonics of various styles that can often be traced down to deep parts of the crust. Horizontal Variscan compression plays a dominant role in the northern part while post-Variscan extension seems to dominate in the Saar-Nahe Basin, although even there traces of Variscan compression seem to be preserved in the middle crust. Common characteristics of the pre-Palaeozoic basement, differences between the western and eastern parts of the Rhenish Massif, and the deep extension of the Aachen Thrust (Faille du Midi) have been clearly observed. This prominent thrust in the north with its characteristic ramp and flat structure has been followed over 100 km length down

Description / Table of Contents: Summary Aim: The quality of segmentation and three-dimensional reconstruction of anatomical structures in tomographic slices is often impaired by disturbances due to partial volume effects (PVE). The potential for artefact reduction by use of the morphological image processing operators (MO) erosion and dilation is investigated. Design: The CT examinations of 31 patients with pathological alterations in lung or brain were segmented using automatic region growing and the MO were applied in a different number of iterations. The processed regions were 3D-reconstructed (shaded surface display, MIP, volume rendering) and the occurrence of PVE-related artefacts using the signal-to-background ratio (SBR) prior to and after MO application was compared. Results: For all patients under review, the artefacts caused by PVE were significantly reduced by erosion (lung: mean SBRpre=1.67, SBRpost=4.83; brain: SBRpre=1.06, SBRpost=1.29) even with only a small number of iterations. Region dilation was applied to integrate further structures (e.g. at tumor borders) into a configurable neighbourhood for segmentation and quantitative analysis. Conclusions: The MO represent an efficient approach for the reduction of PVE artefacts in 3D-CT reconstructions and allow optimized visualization of individual objects.

Notes: Summary The purpose of this study was to assess the role of MR imaging and the paramagnetic contrast agent Gadolinium-DTPA(Gd-DTPA) in the diagnosis of pituitary macroadenomas. 44 macroadenomas were examined with MRI before and after intravenous application of Gd-DTPA. Gd-DTPA produced excellent enhancement of solid adenoma. The best contrast between adenoma and surrounding structures could be gained on post-Gd T1-weighted images. Post-Gd images were equivalent to pre-Gd images in the evaluation of supra-and infrasellar extensions of macroadenomas. Post-Gd images had advantages in the evaluation of cavernous sinus invasion by adenoma. The difference in degree of contrast enhancement between adenoma and cavernous sinus facilitated the exact evaluation of lateral extension by adenoma in 18 cases. Almost equal degree of enhancement of both structures impaired tumor-sinus contrast in 2 cases. In the other 24 cases the tumor filled the cavernous sinus completely. It is our opinion that Gd-DTPA can be used on a widespread basis because of its excellent capability to highlight and delineate pituitary adenomas.

Notes: Summary Insulin concentrations in peripheral venous blood and portal venous blood were measured in 18 patients after intraabdominal operations during 20 standardised glucose-infusion-tests (GIT). The conclusion is as follows: 1. In spite of similar preoperative situations and operative traumatisation the islets reactivity to a constant hyperglycemia and the glucose assimilation is individually very different. 2. Measurements of insulin concentrations in the portal venous blood in man show a significant correlation between the profile of the insulin concentration curve and thek-value; the measurement of the insulin concentrations in peripheral venous blood fails to demonstrate a significant difference. 3. In patients with a pathologic glucose assimilation it is not the insulin secretion that is delayed but the insulin regression (disappearance rate) in portal venous blood. 4. In patients with a normal glucose assimilation the insulin concentration curve in portal venous blood shows an oscillating course during the first 30 min. These oscillations registered for the first time in humans indicate an insulin-induced feedback mechanism of insulin secretion.
