Notes: Summary A case of acute interstitial nephritis (AIN) developing after cefaclor treatment is reported. Diagnosis was proofed by kidney biopsy and lymphocyte transformation test. The clinical course of the patient with non-oliguric renal failure was favourable. Four weeks after discontinuation of cefaclor treatment the renal function was completely restored and remained stable over the ten-month follow-up period. It is concluded that cefaclor can cause hyperallergic AIN and acute renal failure.

Notes: Summary A new possibility is shown to explain the deposits of fibrinoid material in the human placenta. The pepsin digested purified IgG-fragment (Fab′) 2G, given intravenously to pregnant women, causes a statistically significant increase of fibrinoid deposits in terminal villi, as compared with placentae from normal pregnancies and from EPH gestosis. As shown by the fluorescent antibody technique, reaction seems to take place in the villous epithelium. The deposition of fibrinoid might possibly be caused by disturbances resp. blockage of transport mechanisms across the placenta.

Notes: Abstract The long-term graft function after withdrawal of steroids from maintenance immunosuppression was analyzed in 98 kidney recipients (59 on cyclosporin monotherapy, 39 on cycloporin plus azathioprine) who had not developed an early rejection episode when prednisolone was discontinued. Seven years after steroid withdrawal the probability of an increase in serum creatinine (〉20% of baseline levels) was 51%. The increase in creatinine was associated with sclerosing arteriopathy as a marker of chronic rejection in 29 of 43 graft biopsies. The addition of azathioprine had no, effect on the stability of long-term graft function and did not influence the 7-year graft survival rate in this highly selected group of patients.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Zum Studium der unter ALS-Behandlung beschriebenen Nephritis wurden Ratten mit Kaninchenantirattenlymphocytenserum (ALS), Antilymphocytenglobulin (ALG) und als Kontrollen normalem Kaninchenserum (NS) und normalem Kaninchenglobulin (NIG) behandelt.
Notes: Summary In an aim to study the nephritogenic properties of anti-lymphocyte serum, rats were treated with rabbit antirat lymphocyte serum (ALS) and anti-lymphocyte globulin (ALG). Normal rabbit serum (NS) and rabbit gammaglobulin (NIG)-treated rats were used as controls. The ALS was obtained by immunization of rabbits with lymphocytes prepared from mesenterial lymph nodes. By immunofluorescent techniques only changes of serum type nephritis were demonstrated. These changes were more frequent and more pronounced in the ALS and ALG-treated animals than in the NS and NIG-treated control groups. Results of precipitating antibody studies were in agreement with the above findings. Signs of nephrotoxic nephritis (NTN) could not be found following treatment with this ALS preparation.

Notes: Abstract In renal graft recipients primarily treated with cyclosporin and low-dose methylprednisolone, withdrawal of the long-term steroid medication increases the likelihood of developing rejection episodes. In order to determine the predictive value of clinical parameters and routine prewithdrawal graft biopsies for the risk of rejection, the authors studied 141 kidney recipients from whom steroids were with-drawn 7–9 months after transplantation in a clinically stable situation. Both the quality of the HLA-match and the results of prospective graft biopsies were found to correlate significantly to the occurrence of acute rejection. In order to investigate the influence of additional azathioprine medication on the incidence of acute rejections in recipients not receiving steroids, immunosuppression was continued with cyclosporin monotherapy in 88 patients and with cyclosporin plus azathioprine in 53 patients. The risk of developing rejection episodes was significantly reduced from 48% after 1 year on monotherapy to 28% after the addition of azathioprine medication.

Notes: Abstract De novo glomerulonephritis (GN) in the graft is an uncommon complication of renal transplantation. We report a case ofde novo membrano-proliferative GN which occurred in a second cadaver allograft in a 42-year-old woman, who developed severe hypertension, nephrotic syndrome, and progressive renal failure. Our material and a review of the literature suggest an incidence ofde novo GN of about 0.5–2%. In contrast to most of the cases described by other authors, the membrano-proliferative type ofde novo GN in renal allografts seems to be very rare.

Notes: Summary Successful xenotransplantation of 5 different established tumor cell-lines was performed in the congenital thymusless mouse mutant “nude”. The tumors were one human carcinoma of the cervix (HeLa), one Burkitt's lymphoma as well as two Polyoma virus-induced tumors from rats and one spontaneous tumor from hamster. During an observation period of 21–28 days all cells formed rapidly growing tumors at the injection site. The critical cell dose varied in the different lines between 104 and 106 cells. Histological appearance of the neoplasias resembled that of the primary tumors. Two established lines from normal flbroblasts (3-T-3) and kidney (CV-1) failed to grow. Our results indicate that xenotransplantation in “nude” mice may serve as a simple in-vivo assay for testing the oncogenicity of tissue culture cells.
