Notes: Accumulating evidence points to an important role of intraneuronal Aβ as a trigger of the pathological cascade of events leading to neurodegeneration and eventually to Alzheimer's disease (AD) with its typical clinical symptoms, like memory impairment and change in personality. In the present article, we review recent findings on intracellular monomeric and oligomeric β-amyloid (Aβ) generation and its pathological function in cell culture, transgenic AD mouse models and post mortem brain tissue of AD and Down syndrome patients, as well as its interaction with oxidative stress and its relevance in apoptotic cell death. Based on these results, a modified Aβ hypothesis is formulated, that integrates biochemical, neuropathological and genetic observations with AD-typical neuron loss and plaque formation.

Notes: The relation between heart rate variability (HRV) and outcome of head-up tilt testing (HUT) in patients with neurally mediated syncope (NMS) was studied in 30 patients with presumed NMS (33 ± 13 years) and in 11 age-matched controls. After 15 minutes of baseline supine observation, patients were tilted to 60± for 45 minutes or until syncope occurred. HRV parameters included RR intervals, standard deviation of normal-to-normal RR intervals (SDNN), and root mean square successive differences (RMSSD). HRV analysis was performed during 5-minute intervals in the supine position immediately after onset of HUT and before syncope or after 30–35 minutes of tilt in patients without syncope. Syncope occurred after a mean tilt duration of 32 minutes in 14 (47%) of 30 patients with presumed NMS, whereas all controls had an uneventful HUT. In the supine position, RR intervals and RMSSD were comparable among HUT-positive patients, HUT-negative patients, and controls (RR intervals: 799 ± 92, 854 ± 137, and 818 ± 128 ms, P = NS; RMSSD: 43 ± 40, 36 ± 34, and 53 ± 42 ms, P = NS). Baseline SDNN was also comparable in HUT-positive patients versus HUT-negative patients with presumed NMS (50 ± 26 vs 52 ± 20 ms, P = NS). Within 5 minutes preceding syncope or after 30–35 minutes of tilt, RR intervals and RMSSD were shorter in HUT-positive patients compared to HUT-negative patients, or to controls (RR intervals: 606 ± 86 vs 710 ± 117 and 739 ± 123 ms, P 〈 0.05; RMSSD: 12 ± 5 vs 23 ± 19 and 40 ± 32 ms, P 〈 0.05). Thus, HRV analysis in the baseline supine position was not a predictor of HUT outcome in patients with suspected NMS. Syncope during HUT seemed to be preceded by increased sympathetic activity manifested by an increase in heart rate and by a decreased parasympathetic tone manifested by a decrease in RMSSD measured for 5 minutes before the event, in comparison with HUT-negative patients and with controls.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary The purpose of the study was to investigate the physiological assessment of a lacto-ovo-vegetarian diet, in comparison to a usual mixed diet and to analyse the effect of a lacto-ovo-vegetarian diet on nutritional status and blood parameters. Following an initial study, 34 resp. 33 subjects, three of them male took part in two investigation periods each lasting three weeks. During the first period (N) the subjects ingested the normal mixed diet, while in the second period (L) they were fed a lacto-ovo-vegetarian diet. The female subjects were aged 52.6±14.3 years, the male subjects 47.7±12.7 years. In both periods food supply ensued from the central kitchen of a nunnery. While preparing the meals, the food intake and the amount of nutrients was assessed with precise weighing methods. Also, the individual food consumption of the total subjects was estimated using food records. The nutritional physiological evaluation was based on the daily consumption of energy and nutrients to assess the nutrient supply, by means of the recommended dietary allowances of the German Nutrition Society. At the beginning of period N and both at the beginning and the end of period L, blood tests of the following parameters were performed: serum glucose, uric acid, and potassium, total protein, total cholesterol, HDL-, LDL-, VLDL-cholesterol, triglycerides, serum ferritin, serum iron, iron binding capacity, hemoglobin, s-GOT, s-GPT, thiamine, riboflavine, ascorbic acid. Measurements of body weight and height, body composition, skinfold thickness, circumferences, body surface, relative weight, blood pressure and sitting pulse rate completed the investigations. Furthermore, meal frequency and the daily individual energy requirement of the subjects were assessed by means of a diary of energy expenditure. On average, the daily energy consumption of women was 2020±611.3 kcal in period N, and 1970±592.4 kcal in period L. Consequently, there was a covering of energy requirements of 103% in period N and 99% in period L. Sources of energy consisted of 14% protein, 36,4% fat and 49,6% carbohydrates in period L, 13.6 % protein, 39.6% fat, 44.7% carbohydrates and 2.1% alcohol in period N.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary A field study about the nutritional status was made in school classes with boys 6 to 19 years old in different regions of Saudi-Arabia. It is reported about 341 pupils in regard to weight, height, skinfold-thickness, circumferences and other body-size measurements. In comparison with anthropometric measurements of comparable surveys in other countries, the Saudi-Arabian school boys were found to be smaller and leaner than boys from the USA, Europe, other Arabian countries and well-to-do Indian boys.
