Notes: Abstract The extraction of amphoteric aromatic amines from water samples is difficult because of their high polarity. For the enrichment of aminobenzoic acids and aminotoluenesulfonic acids with solid-phase extraction, graphitized carbon black (GCB) was investigated. With few exceptions, the 12 analytes studied were extracted with recoveries 〉 60% at neutral or basic pH, whereas at pH 3 low recoveries were obtained. Addition of salt caused a decrease of about 50% in recoveries, addition of standard humic acid a decrease of about 20%. The capacity of GCB cartridges was determined with the breakthrough volume for 4-aminobenzoic acid at different concentrations to be 0.5–1% (w/w).

Notes: Abstract In this paper, tests of an optimized membrane-stirrer geometry for bubble-free aeration of a plant cell suspension culture are described. Cell attachment and clogging of a previously described system [Piehl et al. (1988) Appl Microbiol Biotechnol 29:456–461] led to the development of a new stirrer. The volumetric oxygen transfer capacity has been measured in aqueous medium. The mass transfer coefficient, k l a, was 3.75 h−1 at 25 °C and at a stirrer speed of 34 rpm. The overall oxygen transfer capacity was investigated with a suspension culture of Aesculus hippocastanum. It was shown that the oxygen mass transfer was sufficient even at the maximum biomass of 10–12 g dry weight/l, which was obtained by using this system. Furthermore, special attention was given to medium components like C and N sources, to avoid growth limitation due to a shortage of nutrients.

Notes: Abstract Between July 1993 and September 1996, 107 consecutive febrile episodes in 83 neutropenic cancer patients with a median age of 41 years were randomized to treatment either with piperacillin/tazobactam 4.5 g every 8 h i.v. or ceftazidime 2 g every 8 h plus amikacin 15 mg/kg i.v. per day. In the case of fever 〉38° C 48 h after initiation of the antibiotic therapy, vancomycin 500 mg every 6 h i.v. was added. The study population was at serious risk of a poor outcome, since 67% of the patients had leukemia or lymphoma, 19% of the febrile events occurred after autologous bone marrow or blood stem cell transplantation, the median total duration of neutropenia was 16 days, and the median neutrophil count at study inclusion was 0.09 × 109/l. The two patient groups were comparable in terms of risk factors. Bacteremia was found in 37%, other microscopically documented infections in 16%, and clinically documented infections in 26% of the febrile episodes. Most (96) febrile episodes were evaluable for response. No significant difference was found between piperacillin/ tazobactam and ceftazidime plus amikacin in terms of success rate (81% versus 83%), empirical addition of vancomycin (42% versus 38%), median time to fever defervescence (3.3 versus 2.9 days) or median duration of antibiotic therapy (7.2 versus 7.4 days). No patient died from the infection. Both antibiotic regimens were well tolerated, the study treatment being stopped only in 1 patient because of toxicity (cutaneous allergy to piperacillin/tazobactam). On the basis of the 107 febrile events encountered, we conclude that piperacillin/tazobactam is a safe and effective monotherapy. To define the definitive value of piperacillin/ tazobactam as a monotherapy for febrile neutropenic patients a large randomized trial is warranted.

Description / Table of Contents: The applying of these blocking layers on the surface of the particle mat led to very low formaldehyde emission (0.02 to 0.05 ppm). The effectiveness of these layers was lower when they were placed between surface layer and middle layer. The lowest formaldehyde emission was reached with urea solutions which, in return, led to an insufficient bending strength and optimization will be necessary.

Notes: Abstract: Recombination of fully stripped U92+ ions with electrons has been investigated at the Experimental Storage Ring (ESR) in Darmstadt. Absolute recombination rate coefficients have been measured for relative energies from 0 to 33 eV. For energies greater than 20 meV the experimental result is well described by the theory for radiative recombination (RR). Below 20 meV the experimental rate increasingly exceeds the RR calculation as observed previously in the recombination of light bare ions as well as of Bi83+. This low-energy rate enhancement is shown to scale as Z2.6 for bare ions, where Z is the atomic number of the ion. The U92+ recombination rate enhancement is insensitive to changes of the electron density. Variation of the magnetic guiding field strength from 80 mT to 120 mT resulted in oscillations of the recombination rate at 0 eV. The oscillations are partly attributed to changes of the transverse electron temperature accompanying the change of the magnetic guiding field strength; partly they may be caused by uncompensated small changes of the interaction angle between the two beams.
