    Notes: Abstract We describe a sustained trilineage haematopoietic response to intensified immunosuppressive therapy with anti-thymocyte globulin, cyclosporin A and recombinant human granulocyte colony-stimulating factor in a 4-year-old girl, who developed severe aplastic anaemia after orthotopic liver transplantation for fulminant liver failure induced by non A-E hepatitis. The outcome was successful and allows the following. Conclusion Intense immunosuppression in combination with haemopoetic growth factors and antimicrobial prophylaxis should be considered as first line therapy in severe aplastic anaemia after orthotopic liver trans plantation.

    Notes: Abstract Erythrocytes adhere to each other when suspended in supra-threshold concentrations of dextran of molecular mass of 40 kD or greater. The plasma membranes are parallel to each other over the entire length of the contact seam at the lower effective polymer concentrations. When cells are pretreated with the proteolytic enzyme pronase or the sialidase neuraminidase the membranes are not parallel but make contact at spatially periodic locations along the membrane surface. Pronase induced reduction of cell electrophoretic mobility rapidly reaches a limiting value. Nevertheless, prolonged pre-exposure to enzyme leads to a continuing reduction in contact separations. This result taken with the observation that, for equal loss of electrophoretic mobility, a shorter contact separation results from pronase rather than neuraminidase pre-treatment implies that a non-electrostatic consequence of pronase pre-treatment dominates membrane interaction in the experimental regimes examined here. The average lateral contact separation for different enzyme regimes lay in the range 3.3 pm to a limiting lower value of about 0.7 pm. There was a good correlation between the logarithm of a contact separation index (the approach of separation distance to its limiting value) against the logarithm of a derived index related to net attractive interaction for a wide range of experimental conditions. Treatments which increased attraction or decreased repulsion (e.g. increased dextrans concentration or enzyme pre-treatment) lead to shorter lateral contact separation. This result is qualitatively consistent with the predicted behaviour for the dominant wavelength arising from interfacial instability of a thin aqueous film between adjacent membranes.

    Notes: Although considerable evidence supports a role for excitatory amino acids in the pathogenesis of ischemic neuronal injury, few in vivo studies have examined the effect of increasing durations of ischemia on the extracellular concentrations of these agents. Recently, other neurotransmittiers (e.g., glycine and doparaine) have been implicated in the mechanism of ischemic neuronal injury. Accordingly, this study was undertaken to examine the patterns of changes of extracellular glutamate, aspartate, glycine concentrations in the hippocampus, and dopamine, serotonin, and dopamine metabolites in the caudate nucleus with varying durations (5, 10, or 15 minutes) of transient global cerebral ischemia as evidence to support their pathogenetic roles. Microdialysis was used to sample the brain's extracellular space before, during, and after the ischemic period. Glutamate and aspartate concentrations in the dialysate increased from baseline by 1-, 5-, and 13-fold and by 4-, 9-, and 31-fold, respectively, for the three ischemic durations. The concentrations returned to baseline rapidly after reperfusion. The peak concentrations of glutamate and aspartate were significantly higher with increasing ischemic duration. Dopamine concentrations increased by approximately 700-fold in response to all three ischemic durations and returned to baseline within 10 min of reperfusion. Glycine, in contrast, increased during ischemia by a mean of 4-fold, but remained elevated throughout the 80-min period of reperfusion. The final concentrations of glycine were significantly higher than baseline levels (p = 0.0002, Mann-Whitney test). That glutamate and aspartate concentrations in the hippocampus co-vary with the duration of global ischemia is taken as supportive evidence of their pathogenetic role in ischemic neuronal injury. The observation that dopamine concentrations increased independently of ischemic duration indicates a maximal release with only S min of ischemia and suggests that dopamine's role in the incremental injury seen with increasing ischemic duration is limited to prolonged high concentrations rather than increasing peak levels as seen with glutamate and aspartate. The sustained elevation of glycine concentrations after ischemia may explain the ability of excitatory amino acids to produce delayed toxicity in the reperfusion phase, as glycine has been shown to facilitate glutamate's activity at the N- methyl-D-aspartate receptor.

    Notes: Plants that have evolved to survive on metal-rich soils—metallophytes—have key values that must drive research of their unique properties and ultimately their conservation. The ability of metallophytes to tolerate extreme metal concentrations commends them for revegetation of mines and metal-contaminated sites. Metallophytes can also be exploited in environmental technologies, for example, phytostabilization, phytoremediation, and phytomining. Actions towards conserving metallophyte species are imperative, as metallophytes are increasingly under threat of extinction from mining activity. Although many hundreds of papers describe both the biology and applications of metallophytes, few have investigated the urgent need to conserve these unique species. This paper identifies the current state of metallophyte research, and advocates future research needs for the conservation of metallophyte biodiversity and the sustainable uses of metallophyte species in restoration, rehabilitation, contaminated site remediation, and other nascent phytotechnologies. Six fundamental questions are addressed: (1) Is enough known about the global status of metallophytes to ensure their conservation? (2) Are metallophytes threatened by the activities of the minerals industry, and can their potential for the restoration or rehabilitation of mined and disturbed land be realized? (3) What problems exist in gaining prior informed consent to access metallophyte genetic resources and how can the benefits arising from their uses be equitably shared? (4) What potential do metallophytes offer as a resource base for phytotechnologies? (5) Can genetic modification be used to “design” metallophytes to use in the remediation of contaminated land? (6) Does the prospect of using metallophytes in site remediation and restoration raise ethical issues?

    Notes: The Lechang lead/zinc mine is located in the north part of Guangdong Province, southern China. The tailings residue from the extraction of lead/zinc ores was permanently stored in tailings ponds, which required revegetation to reduce the environmental impact. A field study was, therefore, conducted to evaluate the effects of different ameliorants, including: (1) pig manure (PM); (2) mushroom compost (MC); (3) burnt coal residue (BC); (4) fly ash (FA); and (5) surface soil on the growth of Agropyron elongatum (tall wheat grass), Cynodon dactylon (Bermuda grass), Lolium multiflorum (Italian ryegrass), and Trifolium repens (clover) in the tailings residue. The results from the core profiles indicated that adding FA (10 cm) or BC (15 cm) as a barrier layer between the cover soil and the tailings could increase pH, compared to the treatment with soil only. C. dactylon grew well and had a high cover (90–100%) in all the treatment plots except the control plots without any amendment. A. elongatum and L. multiflorum had a higher cover when grown in plots covered with a barrier layer using FA or BC (both with surface soil), than those grown in plots covered with surface soil only. Treatment plots receiving a thicker soil cover (30 cm) had a better dry weight yield than those with a thinner soil cover (15 cm), regardless of the barrier layer. The results from this study indicate that the use of either 15 cm BC or 10 cm FA as a barrier layer with surface soil, or the use of 38 tonnes PM/ha and 6 cm MC, were effective for the revegetation of Pb/Zn mine tailings. C. dactylon was the best species among the four species used for revegetation.Key words: reclamation, Pb/Zn mine tailings, burnt coal, mushroom compost, fly ash, Bermuda grass, Italian ryegrass, clover.

    Notes: Abstract The preserved array of pressures in the eastern Dalradian indicates that considerable syn- to post-metamorphic differential uplift has occurred. This inferred differential uplift suggests that Buchan sillimanite zone rocks originally lay at higher structural levels than presently adjacent cooler kyanite zone rocks to the west. A number of features are believed to coincide with the western margin of the sillimanite zone. These are a maximum in temperature, sharp thermal features, a high strain zone, and a train of metabasites. These features are explained by invoking syn-metamorphic movement between the Buchan sillimanite zone and the kyanite zone to its west, involving some horizontal component of movement. It is suggested that the lateral, now eroded, equivalents of the Buchan area once provided part of the required tectonic thickening for other parts of the Dalradian. Areas surrounding the Buchan area suffered tectonic burial followed by metamorphism during uplift relative to the Buchan area.

    Notes: Nickel and Zn hyperaccumulation by Alyssum murale and Thlaspi caerulescens bear substantial energetic costs and should confer benefits to the plant. This research determined whether metal hyperaccumulation can increase osmotic adjustment and resistance to water stress (drought). Alyssum murale and Thlaspi caerulescens treated with low or high concentrations of Ni or Zn were exposed to moderate (−0·4 MPa) and severe (−1·0 MPa) water stresses using aqueous polyethylene glycol. In the absence of metals both water deficits inhibited shoot growth. Nickel and Zn hyperaccumulation did not ameliorate growth inhibition by either level of water stress. The water stress did not induce major changes in shoot metal concentrations of these constitutive hyperaccumulators. Moreover, metal hyperaccumulation had minimal effects on the osmolality of leaf-sap extracts, relative water content of the shoots, or rate of evapotranspiration. It is concluded that Ni or Zn hyperaccumulation does not augment whole-plant capacity for drought resistance in A. murale and T. caerulescens.
