Notes: Polyimide was irradiated with a XeCl excimer laser (308 nm) and the ablated area and its surrounding were studied using transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and confocal Raman microscopy. Ring-like structures surrounding the ablated area were detected at all fluences. At fluences lower than 250 mJ/cm−2 the formation of conical structures was observed within the irradiated area. The width of the rings increases with fluence and only slightly with the number of pulses. The rings consist mainly of polycrystalline carbon with a relatively high bond angle disorder, with thickness decreasing radially from the crater edge. The thickness of the deposited carbon was determined from TEM analysis and calculated from the intensity ratios of Raman bands assigned to carbon and polyimide using a two layer model. Comparing the two results an estimate of the absorption coefficient of the deposited carbon could be obtained. On top of the cone structures carbon was detected with a higher degree of crystallinity and lower bond angle disorder as compared to the material deposited outside the crater. With energy dispersive x-ray analysis, calcium could be detected on top of the cones. Therefore, it can be assumed that the Ca impurities are causing the cone structures. The higher crystallinity of the carbon inside the irradiated area is probably due to a tempering-like process on top of the Ca compound which is heated upon laser irradiation or to a mixture of growth mechanisms similar to the ones suggested for the formation of carbon nanotubes on metal particles and carbon nanohorns without metal catalysis. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A ferroelectric-superconducting photodetector has been developed and characterized. An atomically ordered PbZrTiO3 (PZT) ferroelectric gate was grown over a c-oriented YBa2Cu3O7−x (YBCO) high Tc superconductor substrate by excimer laser deposition. Irradiation of the PZT gate with photons near the ferroelectric gap energy resulted in a measurable change of the drain-source photocurrent with the device at a temperature near Tc of the YBCO. The critical temperature of the YBCO base was shifted up to 4 K when the PZT gate was irradiated with photon flux of wavelength from 300 to 500 nm. A responsivity of 360 A/W was measured and an upper bound on response time to optical irradiation of 100 ns was determined. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The low-temperature photoresponse properties for a PbZrxTi1−xO3/YBa2Cu3O7−x thin-film heterostructure capacitor are reported. The fast optical readout effect measured for the device while the YBCO bottom electrode was superconducting indicates a fall time dependent on YBCO state. A simple equivalent circuit model confirmed that the temperature dependence of the YBCO electrode resistance is responsible for the variation of the fall time of the optical readout signal. Such heterostructures can be used to fabricate high power, radiation-hard optical sensors which cover the whole visible range. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract The purpose of the present study was to evaluate whether the high incidence of complications in scoliosis surgery in myelomeningocele (MMC) could be attributed to the surgical technique and whether improvements were possible. Between 1984 and 1996, 77 patients with MMC and scoliosis were treated surgically. The clinical and radiological follow-up ranged from 1 to 10 years with a mean follow-up of 3.6 years. The mean age at time of surgery was 12 years 8 months. The average preoperative scoliosis measured 90.20° and was corrected by 47%. The first four patients were stabilized with Harrington rods after anterior correction with a Zielke device (group 1). Twenty-five patients were operated only from posterior, using Cotrel-Dubousset (CD) instrumentation (group 2). In 13 patients an anterior release and discectomy was performed prior to CD posterior instrumentation (group 3). In 26 patients (group 4) this was combined with an anterior instrumentation. The 9 patients of group 5 had congenital vertebral malformations which made a special treatment necessary. Complications could be divided into hardware problems, such as implant failure, dislocation or pseudarthrosis, infections, anesthetic, and neurologic complications. Hardware problems were seen in 29% of all patients. More hardware problems were seen with the Harrington rod (75%) and after solitary posterior instrumentation (30%). The occurrence of pseudarthrosis was dependent on the surgical technique, the extent of posterior spondylodesis, and lumbosacral fusion. Patients with hardware problems had a mean loss of correction of 49% compared to 13% in the other patients. Depending on the different surgical techniques a loss of more than 30% was seen in 12–75% of the cases. Early postoperative shunt failure occurred in four cases; delayed failure – after more than 1 year – in three cases. One patient died within 1 day due to an acute hydrocephalus, another died after 21/2 years because of chronic shunt insufficiency with herniation. Wound problems were not dependent on the surgical technique, but on the extent of posterior spondylodesis and the lumbosacral fusion. Based on this analysis we believe our current practice of instrumented anterior and posterior fusion is justified. Further, we are very careful to check shunt function prior to acute correction of spinal deformity.

Notes: Abstract  During a period of 6 years (1990–1996), 154 patients with unilateral gonarthrosis underwent proximal tibial osteotomy using 3 different methods of external fixation: (1) closing wedge osteotomy and bilateral fixation; (2) closing wedge osteotomy with unilateral fixation, and (3) opening wedge osteotomy with unilateral fixation. The most common complications were pin-tract infection (25%), temporary nerve palsy (10%), and loss of alignment (17%). At least one complication developed in 33% of patients in this study, indicating that the use and technique of external fixation in proximal tibial osteotomy can be problematic.

Notes: Abstract We present a new technique to determine the complex-valued tensor components of the nonlinear surface susceptibility χ s (2) of isotropic adsorbate layers. It is based on a change of the state of the fundamental polarization by rotation of a quarter-wave plate. We verify the theoretical predictions by measurements on a Langmuir-Blodgett film of a highly nonlinear hemicyanine dye in total reflection geometry. The obtained second-harmonic rotation pattern is analyzed in Fourier components, which are related to the absolute value and relative phase of the tensor components of the surface susceptibility. We compare the obtained results with separate measurements in which a half-wave plate is used to rotate the fundamental polarization. Our results are confirmed by an additional interference experiment. The method presented here allows the single-valued determination of χ s (2) with measurements at only one angle of incidence, in contrast to the half-wave-plate technique.

Notes: Abstract The vapor pressure of several liquid metals was measured using a method based on the gas-controlled heat pipe. Small samples of the test material were placed in a tungsten tube and heated to temperatures above 2900 K. The vapor pressure was measured using a gas-buffered pressure transducer and the vapor temperature was inferred from the tube surface temperature, which was measured with an optical pyrometer. Most of the tests were terminated by the failure of the containment tube. The measured pressures agree well with those calculated by thermodynamic methods from data at lower temperatures.

Notes: Abstract Stainless steel substrates were hardfaced with laser melted Colmonoy applying a continuous wire injection technique using a CO2 laser. The microstructures of single pass laser clad deposits were examined and related to workpiece traverse velocity at constant laser output. Particular attention was paid to the effect of dilution of the cladding alloy due to convectional mixing with the partially melted substrate material. The solidification microstructure of the rapidly cooled cladded layer consisted predominantly of nickel rich cellular dendrites and interdendritic lamellar eutectic borides.
