Notes: Summary Two simple invariant quantities for characterizing turbulent flow fields are introduced. The first one, analogous to conventional Reynolds shear stress, represents a point-maximum value of correlation between two orthogonal velocity fluctuations. The second one is to characterize local turbulence anisotropy. The applicability of these measures is supposed especially by the description of coupling between the coherent structures and the incoherent turbulence. Consequently, the (coherent) turbulence production is discussed.

Notes: Abstract An experimental investigation (LDA technique) of coherent structures in the turbulent plane near wake behind a pair of square cylinders in side-by-side arrangement is presented with particular emphasis put on the use of 2D invariant structural measures.

Description / Table of Contents: Abstract
Notes: Abstract The kinetics of the oxidative polycondensation of 2,6-xylenol have been studied as a function of cocatalyst (amine) and substrate (xylenol) concentration, and the partial pressure of oxygen. Under given conditions the reaction is of the first order with respect to each of the components. This indicates that molecular oxygen participates in the reaction cycle not only as a reoxidizing agent but also as an important ligand of the actual catalytic complex.

Notes: Summary A straightforward derivation shows that in two-dimensional vortical flows without the effect of unsteady irrotational straining there is a set of three diagnostic equations (i.e. not involving time derivatives) associated with the prognostic one for vorticity transport. These equations provide — apart from the primary diagnostic significance — a specific (topological, dynamical, geometrical) meaning treated in detail.

Notes: Summary The aim of this contribution is to introduce a new invariant quantity for the identification of critical saddle and centre points. Unlike (coherent) vorticity, this quantity is based on the rate-of-strain tensor. Here, the direct applicability of the second invariant of the rate-of-strain tensor is verified and its usefulness in determining saddle points is demonstrated.

Notes: Summary The problem of turbulent wall jets on bodies of revolution is investigated by means of a similarity analysis. The procedure aims to determine functional dependence of mean flow similarity scales (length and velocity scales) on a shape parameter. Discussion dealing with the applicability of the obtained results is carried out with reference to previously published ones cited in the literature.

Notes: Summary The similarity solution is presented for laminar wall jets on bodies of revolution for power-law fluids. The functional dependence of the length and velocity similarity scales on a shape parameter and a flow behaviour index is determined. Discussion dealing with flow invariance, modified Mangler's transformation and with previously published results is carried out.
