Notes:
Summary 24 patients with hepatic dysfunction (11 cirrhotics, 12 fatty livers, 1 patient with liver metastases) and 12 normal controls were studied. Disappearance curves after intravenous injection of 5 mg bromsulphthalein (BSP)/kg body weight were compared with determinations of relative storage capacity (S) and transport maximum (Tm) (by infusion technique). Infusion was started 60 minutes after the single injection of the dye. Results were as follows: 1. The disappearance constantk 1 is significantly reduced for both groups of patients with liver diseases (cirrhotics,p〈0.001; fatty livers,p〈0.005) compared to normal subjects. A considerable part of the cirrhoses and fatty livers was found to be within the lower range of standard variation (2 S. D.) of normals. 2. The disappearance constantk 2 was significantly diminished only in the cirrhotic patients (p〈0.001). 3. Statistically all the subjects studied (n=36) showed a significant correlation betweenk 2 and BSP-Tm (r=0.856;p〈0.001) in contrast tok 1 and S (r=0.372;p〉0.10). 4. The 45-minutes dye retention, used as isolated value of the disappearance curve, does not correspond tok 1 (r=−0.226;p〉0.20), however is significantly related tok 2 (r=−0.646;p〈0.01) and Tm (r=−0.720;p〈0.001). Determination of the disappearance constantk 2 and the dye retention after 45 minutes (〉1.0 mg per cent) is suggested to be a quantitative parameter of hepato-biliary BSP-excretion compared to the more complex measurement of Tm.
