Notes: Summary The use of mathematical models in haematology is shown by some examples concerning stem cell kinetics, erythropoiesis and thrombopoiesis. At first, model assumptions are formulated which include the biological knowledge and some regulatory hypotheses. Then, the reaction of the model on stimulation and suppression is calculated. Finally, by comparison with experimental or clincal data one can evaluate how far the model assumptions are sufficient to understand the measurements. Thus one can exclude wrong hypotheses and identify the important regulatory influences.

Notes: Abstract Tin doped indium oxide (ITO) films deposited by e-beam evaporation were investigated using grazing incidence x-ray diffractometry (GIXRD). With increasing doping concentration the x-ray peak positions are shifted to lower angles and the line profiles become broader. Rietveld refinements show that tin in small concentrations occupies regular In sites. Line profile analysis reveals that higher tin concentrations cause an increasing of lattice defects, as grain boundaries and microstrains. The results of the structural investigations correlate with resistivity measurements.

Notes: Summary In 27 to 35% of all cases a five-year cure can be achieved with radical procedures for bronchial carcinomas with or without metastases to the regional lymph nodes, i. e., in stage I and II. In women, where it is sometimes 45%, it is considerably more favourable. - "Out-cell" carcinomas generally have a poorer prognosis, however, some examiners observed five-year cures in 5–15% of their cases. The author would like to emphasize the difficulty of comparing the results on the basis of histological classification. - Well defined solitary tumors of the lung with a diameter of up to 4 cm are survived, after radical operations, for 5 years by approx. 50% of the cases. Modern technique permits pneumonectomy and resection procedures with good results in patients over 65 and in selected cases these procedures can also be extended to higher age groups. Improved surgical results can only be achieved by recognizing suspected patients at an early stage, making a diagnosis and bringing the patient immediately to surgery. Most of all new therapeutic methods must be made available to us. With the use of modern methods for diagnosis and function studies a certain amount can definitely still be gained. Prophylaxis could contribute to a significantly better situation in 10 to 20 years. And the moral: Stop smoking!

Notes: Abstract The influence of low energy ion bombardment on TiNx film growth and film properties was investigated. The discharge was characterized using Langmuir probe technique as well as energy resolved mass spectrometry with a plasma monitor (Hiden HAL 301 S/EQP). The deposited films were investigated by means of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Increasing the N2 gas flow as well as increasing the negative substrate voltage at constant gas flow effect an increase of the N/Ti ratio in the films determined by XPS. The influence of the energy flux to the surface due to ion bombardment was mainly recognized in the substructure of the films. In addition, pure Ti films were modified by nitrogen ion bombardment after deposition using an ion gun. An increase of the N/Ti ratio was observed with increasing ion energy. Finally saturation is reached.
