Notes: Hepatic function was assessed pre-operatively and on the first and sixth postoperative days in 40 healthy patients who underwent prolonged maxillofacial surgery with isoflurane or halothane anaesthesia. No major changes were observed in hepatic enzymes or bilirubin. One-stage prothrombin time and Factor VII concentrations decreased on the first postoperative day and this change-was more pronounced in the halothane group. The results support the use of isoflurane rather than halothane for prolonged anaesthesia in respect of the synthesising function of the liver.

Notes: Abstract The coupled cluster equations first proposed by Coester and Kümmel and developed by Kümmel, Lührmann, and Zabolitsky are derived explicitly from the variational principle for the ground state energy (the “true” energy) using a new set of simple formulas relating density matrices (equal time limits of Green functions) to the coupled cluster functions. In this respect a simplification appears to be achieved by working with a normalized ground state wave function. The further transformation of the variational equations into the standard forms given by the previous authors differs mainly in its pedagogical aspects from ideas found in the existing literature.

Notes: Abstract The ability of PAF-acether (platelet activating factor, 1-alkyl-2-acetyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine) to induce neutrophil migration was tested in the peritoneal cavities of rats and guinea-pigs and in rat skin air pouches. PAF-acether, at doses of 2 and 5 μg per animal, did not promote significant neutrophil migration. The ability of PAF-acether antagonists to inhibit carrageenin induced neutrophil migration in rat abdominal cavities was also investigated. Carrageenin is a substance described to cause the release of endogenous PAF-acether. Neutrophil migration was not affected by PAF-antagonists. These observations challenge the possible role of PAF-acether as a neutrophil chemotactic factorin vivo.

Notes: Abstract “V” shaped widening of the predens space (PDS) in flexion can be a worrisome finding in trauma patients, possibly representing injury to the transverse ligament. These patients may also show widening of the C-1/C-2 interspinous distance. We think this appearance is usually due to increased flexion mobility at the atlantoaxial level with developmental elongation or laxity of the cranial end of the transverse ligament and/or the posterior ligamentous complex. Tearing of only the cranial end of the transverse ligament must be extremely rare, if it occurs at all; there is no reported proven case. Tearing of only posterior ligaments seems possible and should be evaluated clinically.

Notes: Abstract We have established unique restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) patterns characteristic of homozygous typing cells (HTCs) for HLA-DR-1 through HLA-DR-8 haplotypes. These RFLP patterns were found to segregate in family members and correlate 100% with HLA-DR antibody phenotyping. The RFLP patterns were used to type chronic myelocytic leukemic cells which have a Philadelphia translocation from 23 randomly selected Caucasoid patients. The results show an alternative method for the determination of the HLA-DR types without using live cells and to study disease association with the HLA-DR region.

Notes: Abstract In recent years, the method for unitarizing nonunitary Dyson boson realizations of shellmodel algebras has been both generalized and substantially simplified through the introduction of overtly group-theoretical methods. In this paper, these methods are applied to the boson-odd-particle realization of the algebra SO(2v+1) forv single-particle levels, adapted to the group chain SO(2v+ l)⊃SO(2v)⊃U(v), which Marshalek first derived by brute force summation of a Taylor expansion and later Okubo by a largely algebraic technique.

Notes: The azeotropic 80:20 styrene-acrylonitrile mixture was polymerized in 190nm- and 300nm-diameter monodisperse polystyrene seed latexes by batch, batch-with-equilibrium-swelling, and semi-continuous polymerization. Polystyrene seed latexes were used to determine the degree of grafting of the substrate as well as the styrene-acrylonitrile copolymer. The Arrhenius plot of log (polymerization rate) of the seeded batch copolymerizations with reciprocal temperature comprised two linear regions with a sharp inflection point at 65°C. Specific volume measurements showed that the Tg of the monomer-swollen styrene-acrylonitrile copolymer was also 65°C. The final latex comprised the original seed particles grown to a larger size and, in some cases, a new crop of particles formed during the polymerization. The critical factor determining the formation of new particles was the surface area of the seed latex: at or above 226 m2/dl, new particles were not formed; at or below 179 m2/dl, a new crop of particles was nucleated, the number increasing with decreasing surface area. The degree of grafting of the polystyrene seed substrate was greater for the smaller particle size seed latex, and increased exponentially with increasing seed surface area. The amount of grafted styrene-acrylonitrile copolymer determined the stability of the grafted particles in acetone, a good solvent for the copolymer. Dynamic mechanical spectroscopy showed that the continuous phase was either the polystyrene substrate (Tg 104°C) or the styrene-acrylonitrile copolymer phase (Tg 120°C) except where the degree of grafting was high, in which case, the Tg was intermediate between the two values. Electron microscopy of thin film sections stained with ruthenium tetroxide confirmed which phase was continuous and showed interpenetrating networks for those systems of intermediate Tg.
