Notes: Summary Ultrastructural investigations were carried out on the cerebral neocortex in two cases of progressive supranuclear palsy. In both cases, characteristic 15-nm-wide straight tubules were observed in the neurons. The numbers of cells containing the straight tubules and of tubules in individual cells were small. However, the occurrence of the tubules strongly suggests that the cerebral neocortex is also exposed to the disease process in progressive supranuclear palsy.

Notes: Summary Immunohistochemical studies of monoamme neurons werè performed to evaluate toxic effects of 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP) on young adult mice and compare them with chose of their offspring. Mice, 9–11 weeks old (C57BL/6J), injected subcutaneously with a large dose of MPTP (17 mg/kg per day) during pregnancy on Day 9 and 12 of gestation (G9 and G12) miscarried and were examined at 13 weeks of age. Conversely, mice treated during pregnancy with sequential low dose of MPTP (2.8 mg/kg per day at G9–G17 for 8 days) successfully delivered their babies and were examined at the age of 15 weeks. Baby mice were examined at 1 and 6 weeks of age. The tyrosine hydroxylase-, aromatic l-amino acid decarboxylase-and dopamine (DA)-immunoreactive density of caudoputamen was reduced in 13-week-old mice treated with high dose of MPTP but not in the 15-week-old mothers exposed to a low dose of MPTP as compared to their respective controls. The DA-immunoreactive density of the caudoputamen was the only staining that was reduced in both 1- and 6-week-old baby mice. In conclusion, these results demonstrate that MPTP injected to pregnant mice causes a DA depletion in the striatum of their offspring indicating a transplacental effect of MPTP. The findings also indicate that fetal brain is more susceptible to MPTP toxicity than the brain of young pregnant mice.

Notes: Summary To investigate the functional relationship between astrocytes and Ca2+-ATPase of cerebral capillary endothelial cells (capillary Ca2+-ATPase), cold lesions were produced and the cytochemical reaction (CR) for Ca2+-ATPase activity and morphological changes of astrocytes were chronologically studied. Under normal conditions, CR for capillary Ca2+-ATPase activity was mild. However, at 20 min after the operation, astrocytic end-feet embracing the capillaries were swollen, and CR was moderate. Deposits of slightly coarsened reaction product (RP) appeared and accumulated on the abluminal surface. CR became stronger as edema fluid accumulated. At 4, 7 and 15 days, detachment of the astrocytic processes from the capillary wall was observed and in the uncovered capillaries, CR was intense, especially on the abluminal surface. It could be thus possible that the enzyme was related to the blood-brain barrier (BBB). At 2 months, reactive astrocytes has recovered lesionresistant capillaries. CR was mild and its associated deposits were coarser, the number decreasing on both surfaces. The nature and localization of the deposits of RP in the scar were different from those under normal conditions, possibly due to the functional differences between normal and reactive astrocytes in the BBB. CR was mild in association with astrocytes embracing the capillary wall and was intense without astrocytes. Therefore, it might be possible that astrocytes exerted certain effects on capillary Ca2+-ATPase activity in relation to BBB function.

Notes: Summary A monoclonal antibody (Am-3) was produced against senile plaques in the brain of a patient with Alzheimer's disease. Am-3 was reactive with senile plaques of typical, primitive and diffuse type not only in the brain used as immunogen, but also those in the brain of 15 out of 25 autopsy cases of the aged people. Moreover, Am-3 was also reactive with granular materials of various sizes scattered in the 1st, 3rd and 4th layers of the cerebral cortices of the cases with severe dementia. Am-3 was also reactive with vessel wall of the congophilic angiopathy. By immunoelectron microscopic examination, Am-3 was positive with amyloid fibril in the core and crown of senile plaques, and in the congophilic angiopathy.

Notes: Summary We studied five cases of central nervous system neuronal tumor, one gangliocytoma and four gangliogliomas, both ultrastructurally and immuno-histochemically, using antibodies to neuroendocrine markers including tyrosine hydroxylase (TH), serotonin (5HT), somatostatin (SOM), met-enkephalin (MEK), leu-enkephalin (LEK), substance P (SP), gastrin, vasopressin, oxytocin, vasoactive intestinal polypeptide, adrenocorticotropic hormone and calcitonin. In all cases, the presence of dense-core vesicles (60–250 nm) in the neuronal elements was the characteristic ultrastructural finding. Synapses were observed in two cases. Immunohistochemically, variable numbers of neuronal cells showed positive staining for SOM in five cases, TH, MEK and LEK in three cases, and 5HT and SP in one case each. The others were negative. Positive immunoreactivity for multiple markers was shown in all cases. SOM, TH, 5HT and SP were present in the small- to medium-sized cells, while MEK and LEK were almost exclusively confined to the large cells. Our study clearly indicated that these tumors contained neuronal cells which were not homogeneous with regard to neuroendocrine markers.

Notes: Summary Ca2+-ATPase activity on the astrocyte plasma membrane was investigated ultracytochemically, using the lead salt technique. Normal astrocytes showed a weak cytochemical reaction for Ca2+-ATPase activity, deposits of the reaction product being small. At 7 and 15 days after cold lesioning, reactive astrocytes apparently in the process of repair of the edematous lesion were observed; these demonstrated an intense cytochemical reaction for Ca2+-ATPase activity in their plasma membranes facing the extracellular fluid, with reaction product accumulation. At 2 months, the lesion had progressed to glial scars containing sporadic microcysts. The reactive astrocytes surrounding the microcysts demonstrated a moderate cytochemical reaction for Ca2+-ATPase activity in their free plasma membranes, whereas those arranged in a cell-to-cell pattern showed little reaction product in their plasma membranes. In conclusion, a more intense cytochemical reaction was always observed in the free plasma membrane of reactive astrocytes.

Notes: A thin Y-Ba-Cu-O film was formed by the organometallic chemical vapor deposition (OMCVD) method. The substrates used were (100) and (110) SrTiO3. After forming Y-Ba-Cu-O at 800 °C, it was cooled at a rate of 100 °C/min in O2 under 1 atm. This film was c-axis oriented, with its (001) surface grown in parallel to the (100) surface of SrTiO3 and Tc =88 K. The (110) surface of Y-Ba-Cu-O was grown in parallel to the substrate crystal and Tc =84 K on the (110) surface of SrTiO3. After forming, these films were quenched in air from 800 °C to room temperature. The change in resistance of the quenched sample with temperature was metallic, Tonset =75 K, and Tc =60 K.

Notes: Seventy cases (47M, 23F) of primary extranodal non-Hodgkin's lymphoma of the oral region were studied to determine tumor characteristics. The most frequent disease sites were the palate (21 cases), gingiva (17 cases) and parotid gland (13 cases). Each lymphoma was classified according to the criteria of the Working Formulation for Clinical Usage. Only 5.7% of cases were follicular lymphomas while diffuse lymphomas had a high incidence. Histologic subtypes included small lymphocytic (1%), small cleaved cell (7%), mixed small and large cell (20%), large cell (43%), large cell, immunoblastic (17%), lymphoblastic (9%) and small non-cleaved cell lymphoma (3%). Immunologic study utilizing the avidin-biotinylated horseradish peroxidase complex (ABC) technique demonstrated the presence of intracytoplasmic monoclonal immunoglobulin in 24 (34%) of the suggested B-cell lymphoma cases; 20 tumors (28%) were classified as T-cell lymphoma based on a positive reaction for mouse monoclonal antibody (UCHL-1) to T-cell related membrane antigen; 11 tumors (16%) contained intracytoplasmic al-antitrypsin, suggesting true histiocytic lymphoma; 15 tumors (22%) did not contain immunoglobulin, UCHL-1 or α1-antitrypsin positive cells and showed no definite characteristics.

Notes: Summary The cochlear blood flow of normal adult guinea pigs was measured by a laser Doppler flowmeter. The validity of this flowmeter was ascertained by its specificity for blood flow and its sensitivity to blood flow changes. Angiotensin II was infused into the animals and asphyxia was induced. The responses of the cochlear blood flow showed a close correlation with those of the systolic blood pressure. These results suggest a passive aspect in the physiology of cochlear blood circulation. On the other hand, there was a negative correlation between the responses of auricular skin blood flow and those of systolic blood pressure to a certain dose range of angiotensin II. To clarify the specific details of inner ear blood flow, further studies of the hemodynamics of the inner ear blood circulation should be continued under various experimental conditions.
