    Notizen: Amorphous-like oxide films of the Bi2O3-Fe2O3-PbTiO3 ternary system prepared by rf-reactive sputtering exhibit ferromagnetism and ferroelectricity simultaneously well above room temperature. In this paper, we have investigated the relation between the film structure and the magnetic properties of the films by means of x-ray diffractometry, transmission electron microscopy, magnetization measurement with a vibrating-sample magnetometer, and Mössbauer spectroscopy. The film composition used in the study is 0.16Bi2O3-0.74Fe2O3-0.10PbTiO3, which attains the maximum magnetization in this ternary system. It is revealed that ferromagnetism originates from the amorphous part in the films.

    Notizen: In this paper, the magnetic properties of ferromagnetic oxide films of the ternary Fe2O3-Bi2O3-PbTiO0 system prepared by rf-reactive sputtering are presented. As-sputtered films deposited at a substrate temperature below 400 °C are amorphous and behave paramagnetically. Amorphous films like these whose composition corresponds to the perovskite solid solution of BiFeO3 -PbTiO3 become crystalline with a perovskite structure on annealing in air, but no distinct spontaneous magnetization appears. On the contrary, in certain compositions in the Fe2O3 -Bi2O3 -PbTiO3 system, the samples retain a glassy (or amorphouslike) state even when the samples were annealed at around 600 °C. Also a spontaneous magnetization appears at room temperature. The maximum room-temperature saturation magnetization 4πMs achieved in this system is 1.67 kG with the composition 0.74Fe2O3 -0.16Bi2O3 -0.10PbTiO3. Experiments imply that the amorphous state is essential for establishment of strong ferromagnetism in the sputtered oxide films. Mössbauer spectroscopy and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy were performed to examine the microscopic properties of the films that lead to ferromagnetism. The optical transmissivity and magneto-optical Faraday effect of the films are also discussed.

    Notizen: Summary The expression of epidermal growth factor (EGF) was examined on various human tissues by radioimmunoassay, immunohistochemistry and Northern blot analysis. Immunoreactive EGF was found in most of the human tissues by radioimmunoassay at various levels. Large quantities of EGF were detected in the kidney and thyroid gland. Immunohistochemically, EGF immunoreactivity was detected mainly in the epithelial cells of the lung, stomach, duodenum, pancreas, kidney, pituitary gland, thyroid gland, mammary gland, ovary, uterus and placenta. Weakly EGF-positive cells were also found in the adrenal gland. The results of EGF-immunostaining were not always consistent with the data from radioimmunoassay. We consider that the amount of EGF measured by radioimmunoassay reflects the density of EGF-positive cells in the tissues and the concentration of EGF in individual EGF-positive cells. Furthermore, EGF mRNA was expressed in the salivary gland, thyroid gland, mammary gland and kidney. It is thus evident that EGF is produced by a variety of human tissues. The kidney expressed exceptionally high levels of EGF mRNA which was about one-tenth of the expression in mouse submandibular gland, suggesting that most of EGF in the urine is produced and secreted by the epithelial cells of renal tubules.

    Notizen: Summary Cerebral blood flow (CBF) and cerebrovascular reserve capacity (CRC) were measured by stable xenon computerized tomography (Xe-CT) and acetazolamide test in 15 patients with cerebrovascular disease before and after extracranial-intracranial (EC-IC) bypass surgery for minor stroke, reversible ischemic neurological deficit or transient ischemic attack. All had angiographically shown occlusive lesions of the major arterial trunk. In the present series, global analysis showed that the bypass did not increase the resting rCBF, but did increase the rCRC. We divided the patients into four groups according to the preoperative resting rCBF and rCRC. All 3 patients with normal resting rCBF and reduced rCRC showed postoperative improvement of rCRC. Of 6 patients with reduced CBF and reduced CRC, three had postoperative increase in resting CBF and four had increased CRC. One of two patients with reduced CBF and normal CRC showed only an increase in CRC. We propose that reduced CRC or reduced CBF with reduced CRC are criteria for selection of candidates for bypass surgery. We conclude that Xe-CT with the Diamox test is a useful and simple method for evaluating cerebral hemodynamics. Preoperative grouping with a combination of preoperative resting cCBF and preoperative rCRC is useful for predicting the effect of EC-IC bypass surgery.

    Notizen: Summary Three cases of meningiomas which had abundant small vacuoles in the tumor tissue are reported. By electron microscopy, the tumor cells exhibited long and thin processes, the tips of which were united by desmosomes. The tumor tissue was revealed to have wide extracellular spaces which corresponded to the vacuoles observed by light microscopy. In previous literature, various terms have been used when referring to this meningioma, such as microcystic meningioma or vacuolated meningioma. Since the ultrastructure of the tumor showed similarity to that of normal arachnoid trabecular cells, we propose to call the tumor “arachnoid trabecular cell meningioma” denoting its morphological nature clearly.

    Notizen: Summary We described cytoplasmic inclusions in glial cells in 18 patients with olivopontocerebellar atrophy (OPCA) (multiple system atrophy, MSA). These glial inclusions showed intense argyrophilia with modified Bielschowsky's and Bodian's silver impregnation techniques, and were observed in the pons, cerebellar white matter, midbrain, medulla oblongata and basal ganglia, as well as cerebral white matter and spinal cord. None of the 54 control cases had glial argyrophilic inclusions. Immunohistochemically, these inclusions were intensely labeled by anti-ubiquitin antibody. Some of them reacted with an antibody to Rosenthal fiber (RF) protein. The cytoplasm of ubiquitinated inclusion-bearing glial cells was immunostained by anti-Leu-7 antibody, but not by anti-GFAP antibody. Ultrastructurally, the glial inclusions were composed primarily of approximately 24- to 40-nm fibrils, which were coated with osmiophilic granular material along their length in longitudinal section. These fibrils appeared as annuli in cross section. Often, a central granule approximately 5 nm in diameter was seen in the lucent lumen of a cross-sectioned fibril. The granule-coated fibrils were not seen in the glial filament-containing astrocytes. Electron microscopic examination of silver-impregnated specimens revealed that the granule-coated fibrils had strong affinity for silver. Immunoelectron microscopy using the indirect immunoperoxidase techniques with antibodies to ubiquitin and RF protein revealed that the electron-dense reaction products respective to both were located on constituents of glial inclusions. Our observation that Leu-7-positive glial cells, mainly oligodendroglial cells, had argyrophilic ubiquitinated inclusions may be of significance for the evaluation of the pathology of OPCA(MSA).

    Notizen: Abstract Using a volume-compensation technique, a portable device has been designed for the indirect measurement of beat-to-beat arterial pressure and its waveforms in the basal phalanx of fingers of ambulatory subjects. The device consists of (1) a transmission infra-red photoelectric plethysmograph (TIPP) to detect the variation of arterial volume, (2) a pneumatic cuff with an actuator, (3) a servosystem to control the cuff pressure, and (4) a stereo cassette tape recorder. Arterial pressure was determined from the cuff pressure which was controlled by the servosystem so as to maintain the arterial volume constant at the ‘vascular unloading’ state. This device is equipped with a compensator for any hydrostatic pressure difference between the heart and finger. Thus, the blood pressure at heart level can be obtained for any finger height. The total weight of the device was 1·6kg. Blood pressure changes during walking, jogging, jumping, and exercises such as side-stepping, Master's two-step test and car driving, have been successfully recorded.

    Notizen: The mass spectrum of mercury/cesium complex clusters (Hg)nCs+ is observed up to m/z=118 000 (n = 590). Singly charged clusters are produced by Cs+ ion bombardment. The presence of an alkali metal in the ionization process yields cluster ions of the form (Hg)nX+. The clusters are analysed using the grand-scale mass spectrometer, GEMMY, at Osaka University. The mass resolution of the instrument is high enough to resolve each cluster up to m/z=70 000. From the pattern of cluster distribution, the structrues of the large clusters can be studied. The number of Hg groups in metastable decay increases with the cluster size n. The ion intensities of the mercury/cesium clusters are much stronger than that from CsI (used for mass calibration). The mass spectrum of the clusters can therefore easily be utilized for direct mass calibration up to m/z=70 000.

    Notizen: Abstract The dissociation patterns of doubly charged noble metal clusters (M) n ++ to two singly charged clusters, (M) m Emphasis〉1/+ and (M) m Emphasis〉2/+ have been investigated using a double focusing mass spectrometer. They are compared with the dissociation patterns from singly charged clusters. The dissociation probabilities to (M) 3 + and (M) 9 + were large and the odd-even alternations were observed in both patterns.

    Notizen: Abstract Manganese cluster ions Mn k + (k≲60) have been produced by 7 keV Xe ion bombardment and analyzed by a double-focusing mass spectrometer. Discontinuous variations of intensity are found atk=5, 14, 16, 29, 34, 45 and 54. Most of these magic numbers coincide with or differ by only one from those observed in Ar k + . The similarity in magic numbers between Mn k + and Ar k + indicates that the bonding nature in the charged Mn clusters is similar to that in the charged Ar clusters; The polarization force between a positive ion in the center of a cluster and surrounding neutral atoms is dominant binding force.
