    Notizen: Yttrium iron ferrite films of amorphous structure (as examined by x-ray diffraction), having ferromagnetic moment at room temperature, are successfully synthesized from an aqueous solution by a ferrite plating method in which the substrate is heated by Xe-lamp beams. The atomic ratio of Y/Fe in the films is adjusted to Y/Fe=0.6, as in Y3Fe5O12, by properly choosing the atomic ratio (Y/Fe=3.5) in the reaction solution. The magnetization of the films at room temperature is 10–40 emu/cc, several times smaller than that observed for crystalline YIG. It exhibited, however, a paramagnetic Mössbauer spectrum at room temperature, suggesting that the weak magnetization is ascribed to the magnetic impurity phase whose concentration is too small to be discerned by x-ray diffraction and Mössbauer measurements. The spectrum has an isomer shift of 0.22 mm/sec at 300 K and a hyperfine field splitting of 462 kOe at 12 K, indicating that the Fe ions are in a trivalent high spin state.

    Notizen: In situ observations of As atoms at step sites of vicinal Si (100) surfaces have been performed by coaxial impact-collision ion scattering spectroscopy. It is found that some As atoms remain at Si step sites even at a high substrate temperature of 780 °C under an As residual pressure, in spite of evaporation of As atoms from terrace sites. This result indicates that As atoms at step sites are energetically more stable than the As dimers on the terrace. Moreover, the angular profiles of the scattering intensity from As atoms at step sites suggest that there is atomic displacement of As atoms towards the Si substrate at the step sites. An atomic model of the As/Si system is proposed from the results of computer simulation for the scattering intensity profiles.

    Notizen: A force sensing microcantilever has been developed with sputtered ZnO thin film sandwiched electrodes. Typical cantilever dimensions are 150 μm long×50 μm wide×3.5 μm thick. The ZnO film with thickness of 1.0 μm has high resistivity ((approximately-greater-than)2.0×107 Ω m) and good piezoelectricity. By detecting the change of the resistance between the electrodes, the static deflection of the cantilever end can be sensed. The ac deflection of the cantilever can be measured with high sensitivity by using the piezoelectric effect. The cantilever in question is useful for scanning force microscopy both in static contact mode and in dynamic mode.

    Notizen: As the first step to the study of increasing biocompatibility of expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (EPTFE) membranes, cardiovascular patches of EPTFE substrates were coated with Fe3O4 layer, which is expected to accelerate proliferation of endothelial cells. The ferrite layers were formed by the thin liquid film ferrite plating method at T=75–90 °C and pH (in oxidizing solution)=6.9–7.4. At a fixed pH value, a single-phase Fe3O4 layer is obtained when T is higher than a threshold temperature, which increases with an increasing pH value; below the threshold temperature, the layer has an impurity phase of γ-FeOOH. The obtained Fe3O4 layers are polycrystalline with no preferred orientation, having magnetization and coercive force which agree with those reported for bulk samples.

    Notizen: Abstract To evaluate the usefulness of an MRI score for identifying tumour tissue characteristics, 41 histologically verified supratentorial astrocytic gliomas, including 13 low-grade astrocytomas (LGA) 14 anaplastic astrocytomas (AA) and 14 glioblastoma multiformes (GBM), were examined with a 0.5T superconductive MR imager. Nine MRI criteria were used: heterogeneity (HET), cyst formation or necrosis (CN), haemorrhage (HEM), crossing the midline (CM), oedema or mass effect (EM), border definition (BD), flow void (FV), degree (CE-D) and heterogeneity (CE-HET) of contrast enhancement; Gd-enhanced T1-weighted images were obtained in 32 cases (10 LGA, 10 AA, and 12 GBM). Each of the criteria was scored and analysed statistically. The mean values of LGA, AA and GBM were 0.45±0.31, 1.18±0.20, and 1.47±0.22, respectively. The MRI score increased with the pathological grades (P〈0.01–0.001). LGA had significantly lower values than AA in five (HET, CN, EM, BD, CE-D) of the nine criteria (55.6%) and lower values than GBM in all except HEM (88.9%). Three criteria (33.3%): HET, CN, and FV were significantly higher in GBM than AA. CE-D, HET, EM, CN, and CE-HET proved to be related to the pathological grade by a multiple regression analysis (P〈0.001).

    Notizen: Abstract A case of a 12-year-old girl with a multiple auto-immune disorder is reported. She showed Hashimoto thyroiditis which subsequently developed to hashitoxicosis and distal renal tubular acidosis at 5 years of age, pernicious anaemia at the age of 9 and severe encephalopathy at the age of 12. Laboratory studies revealed very high titres of anti-microsomal and anti-thyroglobulin antibodies and positive gastric parietal cell antibody. As to the encephalopathy, positive oligoclonal IgG bands and high values of IgG index and IgG synthesis ratio in CSF were observed with aggravation of her neurological symptoms. High-dose steroid therapy was effective toward the encephalopathy. Paediatricians should pay careful attention to patients with Hashimoto thyroiditis for association with other auto-immune disorders.

    Notizen: Summary The cell wall of a green alga,Oocystis apiculata, was visualized by electron microscopy after preparation of samples by rapid-freezing and deep-etching techniques. The extracellular spaces clearly showed a random network of dense fibrils of approximately 6.4 nm in diameter. The cell wall was composed of three distinct layers: an outer layer with a smooth appearance and many protuberances on its outermost surface; a middle layer with criss-crossed cellulose microfibrils of approximately 15–17 nm in diameter; and an inner layer with many pores between anastomosing fibers of 8–10 nm in diameter. Both the outer and the inner layer seemed to be composed of amorphous material. Cross-bridges of approximately 4.2 nm in diameter were visualized between adjacent microfibrils by the same techniques. The cross-bridges were easily distinguished from cellulose microfibrils by differences in their dimensions.

    Notizen: Abstract The incA gene of CoIE2 is involved in the copy number control and incompatibility. Two promoters were identified around the incA gene. Transcription of the mRNA for the essential plasmid-coded initiator protein (Rep) mainly starts at a site about 140 by upstream of the initiation codon of the Rep protein. The second transcript (RNA 1) of about 115 nucleotides with two stem-and-loop structures is entirely complementary to the 5′ untranslated region of the Rep mRNA. By using translational and transcriptional fusions of the rep gene of CoIE2 and the lacZ gene of Escherichia coli, the incA gene product was shown to regulate expression of the rep gene at a posttranscriptional step. The results also suggest that the target of the incA gene product is the 5′ untranslated region of the Rep mRNA. Deletion analyses reported here show that a region(s) about 17 to 70 by upstream of the initiation codon of the Rep protein and another region inside the coding frame are important for efficient production of the Rep protein. This suggests that some additional sequence elements other than the initiation codon and the Shine-Dalgarno region and/or a secondary structure of the Rep mRNA are required for efficient production of the Rep protein. These results show that RNA I is an antisense RNA for the Rep mRNA and imply that it might regulate expression of the rep gene at the initiation step of translation by sequestering such additional sequence elements and/or by disrupting RNA secondary structure. We propose that RNA I represents the incA gene product.
