    Notizen: To study the size effects in ferroelectric thin film, we measured the optical transmittance and Raman spectra in BaTiO3 thin films deposited by the rf-magnetron sputtering technique on fused quartz and (111) Si substrates. A variation in the energy gap and Raman peaks with film thickness and grain size was observed and the possible origin was analyzed. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: Differential scanning calorimetry and dynamic differential scanning calorimetry were used to analyze the relaxation process of Fe(CuNb)SiB amorphous alloys. The Curie temperature (TC) evolution of the amorphous phase during relaxation as a function of heating rate, time and pre-annealing temperature were measured. Two distinct relaxation processes are observed, consequent with topological and chemical short range order changes. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: The extent of partial erasure across a written track is measured experimentally on a spin-stand. Using the combined track profiling-1D/3D method of measuring partial erasure, it is found that partial erasure, or intertransition percolation, does not occur uniformly across the track. The portion of transition near the track edges actually percolates at lower densities than the center portion of the track as recording density increases. The overall partial erasure of the track is mainly attributed to the reduction in signal strength near the track edges, results from the reduced head field gradient near the edges of the head poles. This distribution of partial erasure across the track becomes highly asymmetric at large skew angles, especially in narrow track recording systems. Intertransition percolation becomes more severe on the side of the track that has a wider erase band. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: A systematic investigation of the structure and magnetic properties of novel compounds Tb3(Fe1−xVx)29 (x=0.033, 0.044, 0.056, and 0.061) has been performed. The lattice parameters and Curie temperatures are obtained. The saturation magnetization of Tb3(Fe1−xVx)29 decreases but the anisotropy field increases linearly with increasing V concentration at 4.2 K and room temperature. The spin reorientations of the easy magnetization direction of Tb3(Fe1−xVx)29 occur at around 160 K. A first order magnetization process of Tb3(Fe1−xVx)29 is observed with magnetic field in the range between 2.0 and 1.6 T at room temperature. The saturation magnetization of Tb3Fe29−yVy with a low V concentration at 4.2 K can be roughly calculated based on a combination of that of the Tb2Fe17 and TbFe12−yVy units in a ratio of 1:1. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: Granular NiFe/Ag multilayer film exhibits low saturation field and large giant magnetoresistance (GMR) effect, suited as low-field sensor materials.1 However, observed Barkhausen noise in the GMR measurements in these films have been limiting their practical applications.2 Here, we report a micromagnetic modeling study, focusing on the correlation between the micromagnetic properties and film microstructure. It is found that the spatial randomness of intergranular exchange coupling, likely to occur in the film due to its granular microstructure, can cause Barkhausen jumps in GMR response. Figure 1 shows calculated GMR value of a patterned NiFe/Ag/NiFe trilayer with a size of 1.28 μm×1.11 μm, as a function of external fields, applied along its hard axis direction. The Barkhausen jumps can be clearly identified along the GMR response due to its μm size domain switching. In addition to the spatial nonuniformity, effects of various intergranular and interlayer Heisenberg and non-Heisenberg exchange couplings are systematically studied. Figure 2 shows the calculated GMR response for a patterned planar isotropic trilayer film with an interlayer biquadratic exchange coupling. The triangular shape of the GMR response is the characteristics of the biquadratic interlayer exchange coupling. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: To determine the phenotypic expression of cementoblasts responsible for acellular cementum, an immunohistochemical study was performed using a polyclonal antibody raised against the aminoterminal peptide of rat osteocalcin (OC). Maxillary first molars of Wistar male rats aged 2 and 3 wk were used for observations. Serial sections of decalcified paraffin embedded specimens were stained either with hematoxylin and eosin or with the anti-OC antibody. In 2-wk-old rats, apical roots were lined with the epithelial root sheath. A thin layer of acellular cementum was seen at most of the root surface, but was not seen near to root apex. In 3-wk-old rats, cellular cementum began to be formed at root apex, and acellular cementum became more thick than in 2-wk-old rats. Acellular and cellular cementum were lined with the fibroblast-like cells. Osteocalcin staining was detected in cells lining root surface in both 2- and 3-wk-old rats. Almost all cells lining cellular cementum were positive for OC. In contrast OC positive cells lining acellular cementum and root surface devoid of cementum appeared at a specific site of the root. The cells at the interradicular area of root surface were positive but the cells at the outer area (the opposite side of the interradicular area) were negative for OC. Osteoblasts and odontoblasts were positive with the antibody. The present results suggest that the OC expression of cementoblasts forming acellular cementum is similar to that of cells forming cellular cementum as well as osteoblasts and odontoblasts, and has a role for calcification of acellular cementum.

    Notizen: Abstract Crop production on red soils in China is largely limited by the low availability of phosphorus, which is frequently attributed to the adsorption of phosphate by variable-charge minerals including Fe and Al oxides and kaolinite. Isotopic tracing analysis and soil incubation were carried out to investigate the desorption and microbial transformation of applied specifically sorbed P in two pH-contrasting light-textured soils. A rapid release of P from the added mineral-P surface complex in the two tested soils was observed. Most of the released P was recovered in a 0.5MNaHCO3 extract and in soil microbial biomass. Microbial biomass-32P was detected at early stages of incubation and reached up to 10–30% of the added 32P. Approximately 50–70% of the added complex 32P, varying between minerals and soils, was extractable in the 0.5MNaHCO3 at 75 days after incubation for the acid soil but up to 120 days for the neutral soil. Microbial biomass-P plus 0.5MNaHCO3-extractable 32P accounted for more than 60–80% of total added complex-32P, implying high desorption and transformation of the specifically sorbed P in the two soils. There was more inorganic 32P than organic 32P in the NaHCO3 extract, suggesting that chemical release of specifically sorbed P was dominant. Ligand exchange and chemical desorption due to a change in environmental conditions such as pH and ionic strength are likely the major mechanisms responsible for the chemical release of specifically sorbed 32P in the tested soils.

    Notizen: Abstract Screening of an apple genomic library with (GA)15 and (GT)15 probes demonstrated that these repeats are abundant, occurring about every 120 and 190 kb, respectively. Microsatellites isolated from a small insert library enriched for (GA) repeats contained numbers of repeats ranging from 7 to 39. Primers to these microsatellite loci were able to direct the amplification of the repeats in 21 different cultivars. The majority of markers were highly polymorphic, diploid, and showed simple Mendelian inheritance, although about 25% of markers generated complex banding patterns consistent with the amplification of more than one locus. As few as three microsatellite markers were sufficient to differentiate between all 21 cultivars.
