    Notes: The ground state geometries of sulfur clusters S2 to S13 have been calculated using a parameter-free density functional (DF) method, combined with molecular dynamics (MD) and simulated annealing techniques. The results are in good agreement with available experimental data, and should provide reliable predictions where detailed measurements are lacking (n=3,4,5,9). The bonding trends are discussed in detail. The MD-DF approach is particularly valuable in larger clusters, where there are many local energy minima with comparable energies.

    Notes: Density functional calculations of the energy surfaces of infinite helical chains of selenium have been performed for a wide range of geometries using the parameter-free local density approximation. The results are compared with our earlier calculations for the sulfur helix S∞ for which the calculated ground state geometry is in good agreement with experiment. The energy surfaces of both molecules are flat over large regions of configuration space—consistent with the extreme flexibility of these molecules—and are characterized by a variety of local minima and saddle points. Stretching each molecule results in planar zig-zag and linear geometries with overlapping conduction bands. The energy differences between helical and planar minima are small (∼0.2 eV).

    Notes: Addition theorems for spherical wave solutions of the vector Helmholtz equation are discussed. The theorems allow one to expand a vector spherical wave about a given origin into spherical waves about a shifted origin. A simplified derivation of the results obtained earlier by Cruzan [O. R. Cruzan, Q. Appl. Math. 20, 33 (1962)] is presented.

    Notes: We report two patients in whom episodes of polymorphic light eruption were followed by recurrent erythema multiforme on exposed and nonexposed sites. Treating the polymorphic light eruption with prophylactic PUVA and/or oral prednisolone or cyclosporin prevented the development of erythema multiforme, suggesting that the two events are related. It is possible that erythema multiforme develops as a response to the same causative antigen as polymorphic light eruption.

    Notes: The estimation of soil carbon content is of pressing concern for soil protection and in mitigation strategies for global warming. This paper describes the methodology developed and the results obtained in a study aimed at estimating organic carbon contents (%) in topsoils across Europe. The information presented in map form provides policy-makers with estimates of current topsoil organic carbon contents for developing strategies for soil protection at regional level. Such baseline data are also of importance in global change modelling and may be used to estimate regional differences in soil organic carbon (SOC) stocks and projected changes therein, as required for example under the Kyoto Protocol to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, after having taken into account regional differences in bulk density.The study uses a novel approach combining a rule-based system with detailed thematic spatial data layers to arrive at a much-improved result over either method, using advanced methods for spatial data processing. The rule-based system is provided by the pedo-transfer rules, which were developed for use with the European Soil Database. The strong effects of vegetation and land use on SOC have been taken into account in the calculations, and the influence of temperature on organic carbon contents has been considered in the form of a heuristic function. Processing of all thematic data was performed on harmonized spatial data layers in raster format with a 1 km × 1 km grid spacing. This resolution is regarded as appropriate for planning effective soil protection measures at the European level. The approach is thought to be transferable to other regions of the world that are facing similar questions, provided adequate data are available for these regions. However, there will always be an element of uncertainty in estimating or determining the spatial distribution of organic carbon contents of soils.

    Notes: A novel time-of-flight detector system for He+ forward recoil spectrometry which improves the depth resolution to better than 35 nm has been used to investigate the form of the surface enrichment profile in a protonated (normal) polystyrene (PS)/deuterated polystyrene (d-PS) blend. The volume fraction φ of d-PS depends on the depth z as φ(z)=φ∞+(φ1−φ∞) exp(−z/ξ), where φ1 and φ∞ are the surface and bulk volume fractions of d-PS, respectively, and ξ is approximately the bulk correlation length, as predicted by theory.

    Notes: Photocurrent spectra of InxGa1−xAs/GaAs multiple quantum well structures grown by molecular beam epitaxy are studied in the presence of electric fields perpendicular to the heterointerface. Several Δn=0 allowed and Δn≠0 forbidden excitonic transitions are observed. Both negative and positive shifts of exciton transitions are found. Good agreement is found between the photocurrent observations and calculations using a multiband effective-mass approach, taking into account the strain-induced splitting.

    Notes: A variety of superlattices is predicted to exhibit high-speed carrier-activated light modulation. The proposal is based on the large, tunable, and very narrow absorption peak for transitions between the two lowest conduction subbands. The theory, which is demonstrated to be predictive, also suggests correspondingly large variations of the refractive index.

    Notes: Quantum well diodes with barriers formed by thin, short-period binary AlAs/GaAs superlattices were fabricated and found to have very high peak-to-valley current ratios. The effects of varying the AlAs and GaAs layers in the barriers are studied. The peak current density is found to decrease by orders of magnitude for monolayer increases in the AlAs layer thicknesses. Tunneling current peaks due to both resonance levels in the quantum well and resonance levels in the superlattice barriers are observed.
