    Notes: A pressure resistant polycrystalline chemical vapor deposition (CVD) diamond disk for a microwave window is used for a vacuum and a tritium confinement boundary in fusion applications. A pressure test of a CVD diamond window disk (2.25 mm in thickness and 100 mm in diameter) was carried out. It was demonstrated that the diamond window tolerated 1.0 MPa (10 atm) in the plenum. The displacement of the window center for both the growth and the nucleation side on the unpressurized side is 40±1 and 41±1 μm, respectively, at the pressure of 1.0 MPa, and these values agree well with those calculated. No damage in the disk and the braze, and no vacuum leakage in the assembly was observed. This result demonstrates that the diamond window assembly could tolerate up to 1.45 MPa. It was experimentally proved that the diamond window satisfied the safety requirement of 0.5 MPa resistance for the vacuum and the tritium confinement boundary of an International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor. The design prospect for the diamond window of the electron cyclotron heating and current drive system is also discussed, based on the stress analysis using the ABAQUS code. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Self-incompatibility in Brassicaceae plants is sporophytically controlled by a single multi-allelic locus (S locus), which contains at least three highly polymorphic genes expressed in the stigma (SLG and SRK) and in the pollen (SCR/SP11). Using polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) analysis with SXG-specific primer pairs, the S haplotypes of F1 hybrid and open-pollinated commercial cultivars of Brassica rapa were identified. The number of S haplotypes detected in the F1 hybrid cultivars of Chinese cabbage, komatsuna, pak-choi, turnip, open-pollinated cultivars of Chinese cabbage and turnip were 9, 9, 4, 11, 13 and 12, respectively. Nine of them had different PCR-RFLP profiles from those of the S-tester lines that determined the SLG sequences. Four SLG sequences in the F1 hybrid cultivars were determined and named S53, S54, S55 and S56, respectively. It is demonstrated that the PCR-RFLP analysis using specific primer pairs of SLG and SRK is useful for identification of the S haplotypes, in both, S homozygous and S heterozygous plants of B. rapa. The possibility of using this method routinely in breeding programmes, and in the evaluation of F1 hybrid seed purity, is discussed.

    Notes: Abstract. We calculate the effective potential for the WLPNGB in a world with a circular latticized extra dimension. The mass of the Wilson line pseudo-Nambu-Goldstone boson (WLPNGB) is calculated from the one-loop quantum effect of scalar fields at zero and finite temperature. We show that a series expansion by the modified Bessel functions is useful to calculate the one-loop effective potentials.

    Notes: Abstract  Twelve nodulation mutants (seven non-nodulating and five supernodulating) of soybean [Glycine max (L.) Mirr.] were screened for arbuscular mycorrhizal colonization in the presence of either Glomus etunicatum Becker and Gerdemann or Gigaspora margarita Becker and Hall. The cultivars showed variation in colonization parameters. The two supernodulating mutants En6500 and NOD1–3 had higher frequencies of colonization with 2.5–4.5 times higher arbuscular abundance than the respective wild types. The enhanced mycorrhization resulted in significant enhancement of P uptake by En6500. The non-nodulating mutants showed decreases in mycorrhizal parameters. Mutants En1282 and Harosoy–exhibited aborted infection after formation of typical appressorium-like structures at some sites. However, none of these had the non-mycorrhizal phenotype. Growth and nutrient-uptake parameters should be considered while studying plant mutants for mycorrhization.

    Notes: Abstract Objective: To investigate whether metabolic interactions exist between hexane (HEX) and other solvents when co-exposed at the levels below occupational exposure limits. Methods: Workers, 219 men in ten workshops in total, volunteered to participate in the study. They were occupationally exposed to mixtures of HEX and one or more of toluene (TOL), ethyl acetate (EA) and acetone (ACE). Time-weighted average intensity of vapor exposures was monitored by diffusive personal sampling. `Free'- and `total'-2,5-hexanedione (HD) levels in the end-of-shift urine samples were determined by gas chromatography (GC) before and after acid hydrolysis of urine, respectively, and expressed as observed (HDob) or after correction for creatinine concentration (HDcr) or urine specific gravity (HDsg). Possible interaction was examined by multiple regression analysis (MRA), taking either free- or total-HD as a dependent variable, and the four solvent concentrations as independent variables. Results: In most cases, exposure intensity did not exceed the current occupational exposure limits even when additiveness was assumed. In addition that HEX was the most influential independent variable in all cases as expected, the MRA showed that, in cases of free-HD, ACE was also influential to HDob although weakly, but not to HDcr or HDsg. With regard to total-HD, ACE was weakly influential to HDob and HDsg, and EA also weakly to HDcr. The effect of ACE on free- or total-HD was not detected, however, when 22 men exposed only to HEX and ACE were subjected to the same analysis. Similarly, the effect of EA on total-HD was not observed among the remaining 197 men exposed to HEX, TOL and EA only. Conclusions: When the exposures were below occupational exposure limits, the free-HD levels in urine after HEX exposure will not be modified by co-exposures to TOL, EA or ACE.

    Notes: Abstract  Several simple methods of DNA preparation from plant tissues were evaluated for PCR-RFLP analyses of SLG and SRK alleles, which can be used for the identification of S haplotypes of breeding lines in broccoli and cabbage (Brassica oleracea L.) and in purity tests of F1 hybrid seeds. On the five methods tested, the NaI method was found to be the most suitable for the amplification of the SLG and SRK alleles. This method enables the use of a single seed as testing material. Using this method, we identified S haplotypes of 31 broccoli and 31 cabbage cultivars. Ninety-four percent of the cultivars of broccoli and 97% of those of cabbage were-single cross F1 hybrids. Nine and 15 S haplotypes were found in broccoli and cabbage, respectively. The small number of S haplotypes in broccoli suggests the importance of incorporating new S haplotypes in the breeding program.

    Notes: Abstract INAA, RNAA and IPAA were employed to determine upto 26 trace elements in 32 spices of 18 species and 16 pulses of 8 species originating from different localities. The results are compared with each other and the reported values. The concentration levels, their variations and the correlations of the analysed elements in these samples were also investigated. The variability of concentrations among the samples of different origin are small. The levels and ranges of the concentration are highly variable which are found to be characteristic to each element. High elemental correlations exist in some sets of elements, reflecting characteristics of chemical nature of elements and/or of their physiological functions.
