Notes: Measurements of the electron energy distribution function (eedf) of a low-pressure inductively coupled plasma operated in a mixture of Ar and CF4 are reported. The measurement method was laser Thomson scattering. Extensive test were performed in order to verify that any perturbations caused by the laser did not affect the measurements. The eedf was measured for different concentrations of CF4 gas, and the results indicated that it was non-Maxwellian when even small amounts of CF4 gas were present. This dependence was attributed partially to the effect of electron-molecule vibrational excitation collisions. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Highly oriented lead–zirconium–titanate (PZT) thin films have been grown by reactive rf-magnetron sputtering using multielemental metallic targets. The effects of deposition parameters on the film composition and texture evolution have been established. The partial pressure of oxygen (O2) and the heating rates during postdeposition anneal have been identified as critical parameters for the growth of highly oriented (111) and (100) PZT films. In order to control the growth of (111) and (100) orientation it was important to understand the interplay between these two parameters. Texture evolution mechanisms for the growth of oriented films have been proposed based on the effect of O2/argon flow and heating rates on the crystallization kinetics. The effects of crystal orientation on the dielectric and ferroelectric properties of PZT films have also been investigated. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The aging characteristics of 〈001〉-oriented Pb(Zn1/3Nb2/3)O3–PbTiO3 (PZN-PT) and Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3–PbTiO3 (PMN-PT) single crystals have been studied under electrical and mechanical drive. A significant increase in hysteretic loss and decrease in piezoelectric constant were observed under continuous excitation. Systematic investigations of piezoelectric aging were then performed using a novel mechanical fatigue method. Piezocrystals were placed between two magnetostrictive plates and clamped. Periodic longitudinal compressive stresses were generated by applying magnetic fields. At both short and long times, the piezoelectric constant was found to decrease slowly. However, in an intermediate range, a pronounced decrease was observed over a narrow time range. The dynamics of aging have been shown to scale to a hierarchical relaxation process, typical of disordered systems such as random field and glassy states. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Electron energy distribution functions in low-pressure capacitively coupled radio-frequency argon discharges were measured using the technique of laser Thomson scattering. It was found that the distribution functions changed from a bi-Maxwellian at lower pressures to a single Maxwellian at higher pressures. These measurements provide independent confirmation of probe measurements made in similar discharges. The electron temperature and density of the cold group of electrons were measured with an accuracy of better than 10%. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Summary.  The complete nucleotide sequence of the hop latent virus (HpLV) genome was determined. The viral RNA genome is 8,612 nucleotides long, excluding the poly(A) tail, and contains six open reading frames (ORFs), which encode putative proteins of 224-kDa (ORF 1), 25-kDa (ORF 2), 11-kDa (ORF 3), 7-kDa (ORF 4), 34-kDa (ORF 5), and 12-kDa (ORF 6). ORF 5 encodes the coat protein as demonstrated by N-terminal sequencing of three proteolytic peptides derived from the virus particle. The genome organization of HpLV is similar to that of other species in the genus Carlavirus, and the overall sequence of HpLV is more similar to that of Potato virus M than to sequences of other carlaviruses reported to date. The amino acid sequences of the putative methyltransferase, RNA helicase, and RNA-dependent RNA polymerase encoded in ORF 1 and an ‘accessory’ helicase encoded in ORF 2 of the HpLV genome were compared with those of viruses in the ‘tymo’ lineage: the genera Carlavirus, Potexvirus, Allexivirus, Foveavirus, Trichovirus, Capillovirus, Vitivirus, and Tymovirus. The phylogenetic relationships among the viruses in these genera are discussed. This is the first molecular characterization of a carlavirus infecting hop plants.
