Notes: We have developed an instrument for real-time observation of silicon carbide (SiC) crystal during the sublimation growth process by x-ray topography. It is constructed by combining an x-ray goniometer and a crystal-growth chamber. The vertical goniometer consists of three circles, an α circle for the x-ray source, a β circle for the detector, and a cursive-phi circle for the azimuthal rotation of the sample. The growing crystal boule is set at the center of the goniometer glued on a crucible lid. Transmission topographs are taken using an asymmetric (101¯1) reflection with the scattering angle 2θB=β−α from the (0001)-oriented boule. A rotating-anode 18 kW generator with a molybdenum target is employed as the x-ray source. Topographs are observed by a direct imaging system using a charge-coupled device camera. Incident and scattered x-ray beams pass through beryllium windows mounted on the bottom and top flanges of the crystal-growth chamber, respectively. The crucibles are also designed for in situ measurements so that the x-ray beam path is separated from the source materials. The in situ topographs demonstrated the movement of micropipes and other defects during the crystal growth. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Evidence is presented of a lateral variation in differential stress during metamorphism along a regional metamorphic belt on the basis of the proportion of microboudinaged piemontite grains (p) in a quartz matrix in metacherts. It is proposed that p is a practical indicator of relative differential stress. Analysis of 123 metacherts from the 800 km long Sambagawa metamorphic belt, Japan, reveals that p-values range from 〈 0.01 to 0.7 in this region. Most samples from Wakayama in the mid-belt area have p-values of 0.4–0.6, whereas those from western Shikoku have p-values of 〈 0.1. This difference cannot be explained by variations in metamorphic temperature, and is instead attributed to a regional, lateral variation in differential stress during metamorphism.

Notes: The results of electron spin resonance measurements at high frequencies are reported on the antiferromagnet FeI2 with strong uniaxial anisotropy. We have found new signals whose g value is 16.5 together with the signal with g=7.0 reported before [Fert et al., Solid State Commun. 26, 693 (1978)]. We interpret these electric spin resonance signals as originating from single-ion four magnon and two magnon bound states, respectively. Some of the exchange interaction constants are determined from the analysis of the results. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We have investigated the effects of B and C on the ordering of L10-CoPt films and confirmed the following quite different role between B and C in CoPt. A small amount of B considerably decreases the temperature for ordering and is interstitially incorporated into L10-CoPt along its c axis due to the large negative heat of solutions with Co and Pt. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analyses have revealed that B atoms combine with Co and Pt. In contrast, C is not incorporated into the CoPt lattice due to its positive heat of solution, resulting in no decrease in the ordering temperature. The present results reveal that CoPt films containing a small amount of B are promising for high density recording media. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Heteroepitaxy of high-quality InSb films was performed directly on GaAs surfaces by using molecular beam epitaxy. Despite the 14.6% lattice mismatch, two-dimensionally grown InSb on GaAs(111)A substrates were obtained from the initial stage, but not on (001) substrates. A conductive layer was formed from the early stage of the growth on the (111)A surface, and the mobilities and carrier concentrations of InSb on (111)A substrates suggested a low defect density due to confinement of the dislocations to the interface. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Background: Enhanced gastric mucosal chemokine activity has been demonstrated in patients with Helicobacter pylori infection. However, little is known about the mechanisms involved in this phenomenon. Aim: To examine whether in vivo chemokine activity is similar to in vitro response of gastric epithelial cells infected by H. pylori. Patients and Methods: Antral biopsy specimens were obtained from patients with H. pylori infection for organ culture, isolation of H. pylori and histological examination. Results: In organ cultures of mucosal tissues, the levels of interleukin-8 and growth-related gene product α were elevated in patients with peptic ulcer disease compared with those with erosive gastritis or endoscopically normal mucosa. However, there were no significant differences in in vitro cultures of MKN45 or KATO III cells that were infected with H. pylori isolated from these same patients. These in vivo and in vitroα-chemokine levels showed no significant association with the presence of cagA gene and CagA protein, ureB genotype, or binding capacity to MKN45 or KATO III cells in individual H. pylori isolates. In contrast, in vivo mucosal α-chemokine activity correlated with H. pylori colonization density. Conclusion: Mucosal chemokine profiles and inflammatory responses in H. pylori infection may be associated more closely with host factors, including those determining bacterial adhesiveness, than with differences in H. pylori strains.

Notes: Abstract Itraconazole (ITCZ), a triazole antifungal agent, was studied for its effects on the morphology and function of L929 fibroblasts. L929 fibroblasts were cultured for 20 h with ITCZ or one of several other triazoles (fluconazole, ketoconazole, and hydroxy-itraconazole [ITCZ-OH]) at the concentration of 0.5 μg/ml. Among these agents, only ITCZ and its metabolite ITCZ-OH markedly elongated the cells bidirectionally. Scanning electron microscopy studies showed that the surface of the elongated cells was smoother than that of the untreated cells. The viability of L929 cells cultured with 0.5 μg/ml of ITCZ for 20 h was not lowered. However, after treatment with 0.0375% sodium deoxycholate (DOC) solution, the viability of the cells treated with ITCZ, as evaluated by the 3-(4,5-dimethyl-2thiazoyl)-2,5-diphenyl-2H-tetrazolium bromide (MTT) proliferation assay or the release of lactic dehydrogenase from cytoplasm, was decreased. When L929 cells were cultured in the presence of a combination of ITCZ and vincristine, their growth was synergistically inhibited. This synergism was also observed when ITCZ was replaced by ITCZ-OH, but not by the other azoles. These findings suggest that the exposure of L929 fibroblasts to low ITCZ concentrations affects the physiological nature of their cell membrane.

Notes: Abstract The therapeutic efficacy of orally administered fluconazole (FLCZ) and itraconazole (ITCZ) in a guinea pig model of dermatophytosis was compared, using the infection intensity of local skin tissue as an index. After Trichophyton mentagrophytes infections had been established in the test animals, the antifungal agents were administered once per day for 14 days. FLCZ had a dose-dependent therapeutic effect and significantly ameliorated infections at doses of 10 and 20 mg/kg per day (both P 〈 0.01) compared with the untreated control group. The pathogen could not be cultured from previously infected skin tissue from 11% of the animals treated with FLCZ at 10 mg/kg per day, and from 20% of the animals treated with FLCZ at 20 mg/kg per day. The therapeutic efficacy of FLCZ was approximately equal to that of ITCZ administered at the same doses. These results suggest that FLCZ may be a useful treatment for dermatophytosis.

Notes: Abstract Background. We conducted an experimental study, using a combination of coarse crystal cisplatin and radiotherapy for bone tumors, to evaluate the possibility of the clinical application of chemical embolus therapy in the field of orthopedic surgery. Methods. Experimental femoral bone tumors were produced, in rabbits, using VX2 carcinoma. The rabbits were allocated to five groups: untreated control, embolus, chemical embolus, irradiation alone, and chemical embolus and irradiation combination. These therapies were evaluated comparatively, in terms of local antitumor effects (including body weight, X-ray findings, angiography, and histopathology) and in terms of inhibition of pulmonary metastasis. Results. Local antitumor effects, as evaluated by all parameters, except for body weight, were significantly greater for the chemical and irradiation combination group than for the chemical embolus, irradiation alone, untreated control, and embolus groups. There was no significant difference in the inhibition of pulmonary metastasis among the chemical embolus and irradiation combination, chemical embolus, and irradiation alone groups. Conclusion. These findings demonstrated the synergistic effect of the combination of chemical embolus therapy and radiotherapy. In this study, however, no significant difference was found between the chemical embolus therapy alone and the combination therapy groups in the inhibitory effect on pulmonary tumor metastasis, suggesting the need to conduct combination therapy repeatedly in the clinical setting.

Notes: Abstract A homogeneous liquid-liquid extraction method for 36 metal ions with diethyldithiocarbamate was studied. As a result, 11 metal ions were extracted as metal-chelates. Under the experimental conditions, the maximum concentration factor was 500 (i.e., 0.1 mL of sedimented liquid phase was produced from 50 mL of aqueous phase). Moreover, the proposed method was utilized as a preconcentration method for X-ray fluorescence analysis of these metals. The recovery of each metal was ca. 97–100%. All calibration curves were linear over the range of 5.0 × 10–7 mol L–1 to 1.0 × 10–5 mol L–1. The detection limits were at the ¶10–8 mol L–1 levels and the relative standard deviations were below 5% (5 determinations). When the proposed method was used for the determination of contaminants in a synthetic sample (Al-based alloy model) and of components in an Au-Pd alloy, the results were satisfactory.
