Notizen: The effective magnetic moment was measured as a function of Fe island size during the initial stages of Fe growth on CaF2/Si(111) in an ultrahigh vacuum scanning electron microscope equipped with an in situ SMOKE analysis chamber. This substrate was selected for its wide bandgap, chemical inertness, viability of integration into an Si based technology and the availability of nanopatterning using electron beams for producing devices. Fe grown at room temperature initially nucleates into a monodisperse distribution of 3-D islands at very high nucleation densities (8×1012/cm2). Increased Fe coverages lead to 2-D island growth. A room temperature superparamagnetic to ferromagnetic phase transition occurs as a function of Fe island radius. Mean field and Monte Carlo calculations illustrate that three distinct magnetic phases exist as a function of island diameter. Ferromagnetic order is present at room temperature when r(approximately-greater-than)3 nm, superparamagnetism is favored when 2 nm 〈 r 〈3 nm, and a frustrated random antiferromagnetic phase exists when r〈2 nm. Further depositions of Ag on superparamagnetic Fe island arrays produce Ag islands which couple the covered Fe island moments in-plane, implying that the Ag mediates the magnetic exchange between individual Fe islands within an Ag island. Implications for 2-D giant magnetoresistance devices will be discussed. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: Fe, Co, and Ag particles grown on various CaF2 substrates have been studied using ultrahigh vacuum scanning electron microscopy with nanometer resolution. Fe and Co show a very high nucleation density which is remarkably independent of deposition temperature in the range 20〈T〈300 °C, on both bulk CaF2(111), and on thin CaF2(111) films grown on Si(111). This feature is characteristic of nucleation at defect sites with a high trapping energy. An atomistic nucleation model has been extended to cover this case. The comparison with experiment requires adsorption, pair binding, and defect trapping energies all to be around 1 eV. The trapping sites occupy 1% of the surface, and are thought to be chemical (F-vacancy, oxide, or hydroxide) in nature. In contrast, the growth of Ag on the same substrates shows a more usual nucleation and growth pattern, though the growth of Ag on Fe islands shows interesting features which are discussed. A self-similar coalescence model is tested using the data obtained. The agreement is excellent for Ag, while Co and Fe show the expected deviations due to limited surface diffusion around the islands. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: A calibration scheme based on ion-current measurement has been implemented for an electron-beam transition metal deposition source. Repeatable and practical means of positioning the source (tip), measuring the ion current, and determining the flux rate are given. Intrinsic variations in the structural parameters of the source and thermal effects which can modify the observed deposition rate were examined and compensated for. A stable regime where ion-beam current is directly proportional (±5%) to the growth rate has been determined. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: A simple, low cost 3 GHz bandwidth preamplifier suitable for pulse-counting applications utilizing chevron microchannel plate (MCP) detectors has been built with monolithic microwave integrated circuit (MMIC) amplifiers in multiple stages. Its bandwidth matches the rise time of MCP output pulses (〈300 ps), thereby maintaining leading edge timing information. The use of MMICs made this device inexpensive and easy to construct. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: The recent development of scanning electron microscopy with polarization analysis (SEMPA) has made the direct measurement of magnetic structures with submicron spatial resolution possible.1,2 Because the secondary electron spin polarization is proportional to the magnetization in the area probed by the incident electron beam, the magnetization is measured directly, independent of topographic contrast. Topographic images are measured simultaneously, however, permitting comparisons between magnetic and structural properties. In addition the use of multiple, orthogonal detectors permits measurement of the magnetization magnitude and direction. We have recently used this technique to look at various Fe-rich amorphous ferromagnetic alloys. In particular SEMPA was used to examine the rotation of the magnetization within domain walls and to study changes in magnetic microstructure due to Ar ion bombardment and annealing.

Notizen: Iron grown on room-temperature CaF2/Si(111) substrates form two-dimensional arrays of nanometer-sized superparamagnetic islands. Deposition of Ag on the Fe/CaF2/Si(111) produced a superparamagnetic response where the effective moment was proportional to the number of Fe islands covered by an average-sized Ag island. The nonmagnetic Ag overlayer mediates a long-range exchange between neighboring Fe islands within an individual Ag island. Monte Carlo methods are used to examine ordering in two dimensions and to set minimum interisland coupling strengths. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: Germanium surface segregation in Si/Ge/Si(100) heteroepitaxial structures has been studied by quantitative Auger electron spectroscopy (AES) and reflection high energy electron diffraction (RHEED). Ge segregation was measured for 1–4 ML Ge, for slow Si growth rates (3×10−4 nm/s) at moderate deposition temperature (520 °C). A layer growth model is used to infer segregation probabilities between 90% and 98%, increasing with Ge layer thickness, especially between 1 and 2 ML. Using this model, the Ge profile in the cap layer is calculated. Surface roughness is just noticeable at 4 ML, and is incorporated into the model in an illustrative manner. A two-state model is used to determine the segregation energy, 0.24±0.02 eV, for 2–3 ML. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: The REMEDIE system for reflection electron microscopy and electron diffraction at intermediate energies (0.5–20 keV) has been rebuilt with an improved imaging resolution of better than 10 nm, a convenient and versatile system for observation diffraction patterns and provision for specimen preparation and treatment suitable for surface structural studies. The current capabilities of the instrument are illustrated by results obtained from cleaved and annealed silicon (111) surfaces with or without thin deposited silver and gold layers.

Notizen: The recent joining of scanning electron microscopy and electron spin polarization analysis has greatly improved the ability to study magnetic microstructure.1,2 By measuring the spin polarization of secondary electrons, scanning electron microscopy with polarization analysis (SEMPA) can directly measure the magnitude and direction of the magnetization and direction of the magnetization in the region probed by the incident electron beam. This region is defined by the diameter of the incident electron beam (∼10 nm) and the escape depth of the secondaries (∼5 nm). In addition to the purely magnetic image SEMPA also simultaneously and independently measures the usual topographic image, thereby making comparisons between magnetic and topographic structures easier. We have successfully used SEMPA to study magnetic structures in Fe crystals, permalloy films, CoNi recording media, and metglasses. Examples from this work will be given in order to demonstrate the unique capabilities of SEMPA.

Notizen: Three types of mesoscopic magnetic microstructure have been formed using self-organization: linear arrays of nanometer diameter islands, nanometer width lines, and undulating, continuous films. These structures were produced by annealing NaCl (110) and (111) surfaces in situ to produce patterned templates with 10–100 nm periodicity. Growth parameters such as groove spacing, substrate temperature and total deposit thickness can be varied in order to define specific mesoscopic magnetic structures. The microstructural evolution during growth is discussed in the context of nucleation and coalescence kinetics. The resulting magnetic properties are described, and their connection to the underlying microstructure elucidated. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.
