Notes: Abstract Giant cell tumor (GCT) of bone was first established as a distinct clinicopathological radiographic entity in 1940 when Jaffe distinguished it from other lesions containing giant cells. GCT is rare in patients under 15 years of age. We report a case of GCT in a 10-year-old boy whose X-ray films showed osteolysis suggesting a malignant bone tumor. We believe this to be the youngest patient with giant cell bone tumor ever reported in the Japanese literature.

Notes: Abstract. A laparoscopic splenectomy using a hanger wall-lifting procedure is herein described. The patient is placed in the right lateral position. The left lower chest and left abdominal wall are then lifted by three wires in two directions, left laterally and vertical to the abdominal wall. The view of the operative field thus obtained is excellent. The lifting wires and bars do not hinder the movement of the forceps, since the angles of the instruments to approach the spleen are different from those of the wires. A laparoscopic splenectomy using this wall-lifting procedure avoids the usual complications associated with pneumoperitoneum while still being technically comparable to a procedure with pneumoperitoneum.

Notes: Abstract Despite recent progress in diagnostics for hepatocellular carcinoma, the rate of resectability remains low, mainly because of the advancement of the underlying liver disease. We report a case of a 54-year-old man with a hepatocellular carcinoma and poor liver function that was treated successfully with a laparoscopic hepatic resection. Laparoscopic hepatic resection is considered to be feasible with the aid of an ultrasonic dissector and a microwave coagulator; however, close attention should be paid to the development of air embolism and hepatic vein injury.

Notes: Abstract. Effects of serotonin (5-HT) on cerebral cortical neurons were examined by patch clamp techniques. 5-HT produced a variety of responses such as outward (19/73 patches/neurons), slow inward (15/73 patches/neurons), fast inward (8/73 patches/neurons), and mixed currents (initially fast inward deflection followed by an outward response: 2/73 patches/neurons), with a latency of 12 sec, 15 sec, 0 sec, and 0 sec respectively, at a holding potential of −60 mV in whole-cell patches. The fast inward currents were again evoked by a selective 5-HT3 receptor agonist, 1-(m-chlorophenyl)-biguanide hydrochloride (CPBG). In the cell-attached patch clamp configuration, 5-HT inside the patch pipette elicited single channel currents with slope conductances of 42 pS and 132 pS (4/42 patches/neurons). CPBG inside the patch pipette evoked inward single channel currents with a lower slope conductance of 41 pS (3/23 patches/neurons). In contrast, application of 5-HT or a 5-HT2 receptor agonist, α-methyl-5-hydroxytryptamine-maleate, outside the patch pipette induced outward single channel currents with a major slope conductance of 140 pS (8/30 patches/neurons) or 135 pS (6/20 patches/neurons), respectively. These results indicate that the outward and fast inward currents may be mediated respectively by the 5-HT2 receptor, which is coupled to a G-protein, and by the 5-HT3 receptor, which contains the non-selective cation channel, and that the mixed type may be caused by both the 5-HT2 and 5-HT3 receptors.

Notes: Abstract We have found clear anisotropy in the ab plane with fourfold symmetry of the resistive superconducting transition under magnetic fields for single-crystal Pb2Sr2Y0.62Ca0,38Cu3O8, which is regarded as anisotropy of the upper critical field Hc2. This is not only qualitatively but also quantitatively similar to that formerly observed in La1.86Sr0.14CuO4. The observed fourfold symmetry is explained as being mainly due to the anisotropy of the superconducting energy gap owing to $$d_{x^2 - y^2 }$$ pairing. Hc2, one of the bulk properties, supports $$d_{x^2 - y^2 }$$ pairing in the high-Tc superconductivity.

Notes: Abstract The so-called 1/8 effect, namely, the anomalous suppression of superconductivity at the hole concentration per Cu in the CuO 2 plane, p, ∼ 1/8 has been investigated in the partially Zn-substituted Bi-2212 and Y-123 phases by measuring the Hall effect and the muon spin relaxation ( μSR ). The Hall angle has been found to exhibit large enhancement at p ∼ 1/8 in Bi 2 Sr 2 Ca 1−x Y x (Cu 1−y Zn y ) 2 O 8+δ with y=0.025. In YBa 2 Cu 3−2y Zn 2y O 7−δ with y=0.025, anomalous enhancement of the muon spin depolarization has been observed at p ∼ 1/8, indicating that the magnetic correlation between Cu spins is enhanced at p ∼ 1/8. These results support the stripe model and the proposition that the 1/8 effect is common to all high-T c cuprates with the CuO 2 plane.

Notes: Abstract The local magnetic induction is measured in the quasi-two dimensional organic superconductor κ-(BEDT-TTF) 2 Cu(NCS) 2 by using a micro Hall probe. The small step is observed on the temperature dependence of the local magnetic induction. This result implies the existence of the first-order phase transition of the vortex system in this organic superconductor as is already reported in high-T c oxide and other organic superconductors.
