Notes: The optical gains in AlGaInP/GaInP strained quantum wells using valence band structures by the second-order k⋅p method, with and without spin-orbit split-off (SO) band effect have been calculated. It was easy to overestimate the optical gain without considering the SO-band effect, because a small spin-orbit splitting energy for GaInP makes higher nonparabolicity of the valence bands. The SO-band effect is particularly significant under tensile strain, since the SO band makes the effective mass very large due to the large interaction between the SO and light hole bands. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A free-electron laser (FEL) based on the proposed Tohoku Light Source storage ring is discussed. In the first stage the FEL is made to operate in the visible region with a relative low beam energy to avoid the complication of mirrors. Then, with a higher beam energy, the FEL can produce radiation of wavelengths in the UV or VUV region. Some simulation results of the storage-ring FEL with wavelengths of ∼200 nm are presented.

Notes: Abstract Herbivorous voles, Microtus arvalis, have characteristics similar to herbivores in that their hepatic glycolytic enzyme activities are relatively low. The effects of a single low dose (100 mg/kg body weight) of streptozotocin (STZ) in voles were studied and the difference in sensitivity to or toxicity of STZ in voles and C57BL/6 mice was compared. In voles which received STZ, the cumulative incidence of glycosuria reached 53% by 4 weeks after administration. The diabetic voles showed marked increas in their blood glucose and plasma free fatty acid concentrations and a significant decrease in plasma immunoreactive insulin concentrations. Their hepatic hexokinase, glucokinase, glutathione peroxidase and glutamate dehydrogenase activities decreased significantly and lesions were widely observed in the liver, kidney and pancreas. The activities of glutathione peroxidase, a scavenger of H2O2, decreased significantly in their liver and pancreas. These changes were not observed in C57BL/6 mice which received STZ. The higher sensitivity to and toxicity of STZ in voles than in mice are considered to be caused by the characteristically low activities of glycolytic enzymes and glutathione peroxidase in the tissues of voles. Voles may be a good model for studying the mechanisms of cytotoxicity by STZ in herbivorous animals.

Notes: Summary Although early parental loss and perceived rearing have both been the target of intensive research, they have rarely been linked. This study examined the effects of parental loss on the perceived parenting of the remaining caregiver. The effect of early (before age 16) experience of the father's or mother's death or separation from them for 12 months or longer on the rearing behaviour of the remaining parent was studied retrospectively among 1,329 pregnant women. Women who had experienced either death of or separation from the father reported having received less care from the mother. However, experiences of loss of the mother did not show significant effects on the perceived rearing behaviour of the father. The number of siblings was correlated with reduced paternal and maternal care and with reduced maternal overprotection. Our hypothesis that early parental loss experience would have a negative influence on parental rearing behaviour was proved only for the effects of the paternal loss. Search for other determinants may be warranted.

Notes: Summary Among a total of 1,329 pregnant women, neither early loss experience by death or by separation before the age of 16 was related to any of the three depressive symptom constellations derived from Zung's Self-rating Depression Scale – Dysphoric Mood, Cognitive Disturbance, and Poor Concentration. Paternal and maternal low care and overprotection scores of the Parental Bonding Instrument, a measure of perceived rearing, had main effects on the Cognitive Disturbance and Poor Concentration scores, with significant interaction of the two predictors; Dysphoric Mood was also linked to maternal overprotection. These findings suggest that perceived parenting is a predictor of two specific symptom constellations of antenatal depression.

Notes: Abstract: The lifetime of the ((11/2)−) state at 267keV in 125Cs was measured. A Ge detector with the transistor reset preamplifier(TRP Ge) was used to measure delayed γ-rays under an intense prompt background. The B(M2) value deduced from the lifetime was found to be consistent with the Weisskopf estimate.

Notes: Abstract: The high spin states of 143Gd have been studied via the 111Cd(35Cl,1p2n) reaction at 170 MeV. One dipole cascade has been newly found and two dipole cascades have been extended to higher spin states. A relatively long E2 cascade consisting of irregular transition energies has been found, which has only weak connections to the other dipole and quadrupole cascades. This resembles the ones recently found in 142,143,144Eu and 144Gd. The dipole and quadrupole cascades have been found to appear by turns in an energy increment of about 0.2 MeV above the yrast line.

Notes: Abstract High-spin states of148Tb were studied by inbeam γ-ray spectroscopic techniques using141Pr(13C,6n)148Tb and27Al(130Te,9n)148Tb reactions. The level scheme of148Tb was established up to the excitation energy of 11.8MeV. The excitation energy of the high-spin isomer reported previously was revised to be 8.620MeV. The excited states below the isomer could be understood as resulted from the weak couplings of πh11/2 and νf7/2 to those of147Gd and147Tb, respectively.

Notes: Abstract: High spin states in 180Ir have been studied via 154 Sm(31P,5nγ)180Ir reaction through excitation functions, X-γ and γ-γ-t coincidence measurements. Three rotational bands are identified including a doubly decoupled band, a semi-decoupled one, and a coupled structure up to (26+). The quasiparticle configurations associated with these bands are suggested according to in-band B(M1)/B(E2) ratios and band structures of neighboring odd-odd nuclei. Signature inversion in the semidecoupled band is discussed relying on systematics.
