Notes: Ion implantation of carbon in the AISI 52100 bearing steel yields a distinct reduction in friction and wear. This improvement is strongly dependent on the implanted fluence. The coefficient of friction decreases from 0.6 to 0.2 for doses 〉1×1018 cm−2 (energy 100 keV) and a wear reduction to nearly "zero wear'' was obtainable even under severe wear conditions. The counterpart (unimplanted AISI 52100 steel ball) shows a similar behavior, which demonstrates that the tribological system is totally changed. Mössbauer spectroscopy and x-ray diffraction revealed that hexagonal ε-carbide is formed on implantation. On the other hand, Rutherford backscattering spectrometry shows that for high doses a large fraction of the implanted carbon is not contained in this carbide.

Notes: The spontaneous muscular activity of the masseter and two non-masticatory muscles, and their activity under conditions of noise and flickering light, were recorded in 30 patients with mandibular dysfunction, and in 25 control subjects. The mood of the subjects during the investigation, and the possible presence of emotional disturbances was evaluated by means of questionnaires. The enhanced muscular activity of the masseter muscle differentiated patients from the control group, although it does not constitute a pathognomic sign. Unilaterality of complaints, and dysfunctions of differing intensity were not reflected in differential EMG findings. One-fifty of the patients exhibited neck muscle activity occurring simultaneously with the masseter activity. The effect of the applied stimuli on the muscular activity was not homogeneous, leading to activation in some cases and inhibition in others. Symptoms of anxiety could be observed in seven TMJ patients. Anxious patients showed higher levels of muscular activity and emotional irritability during the experiment than non-anxious patients.

Notes: Summary The introduction of the TPHA test in syphilis screening of blood units donated at the Heidelberg University blood bank resulted in an increase of positive test results from 0.16 percent to 0.64 percent at the first donation. Due to the high specificity of the TPHA and (FTA-Abs) test the number of doubtful and unspecific reaction results was significantly reduced. The result “TPHA and CMT reactive” indicates syphilis to be treated. From 1967–1978 this figure (0.06 %–0.07 %) has remained unaltered, indicating that the incidence of syphilis among blood donors has not increased. Using the TPHA test it was possible to detect blood donors with a history of syphilis, a group which could not be identified in the past. It is characterized by the reaction pattern “TPHA reactive, CMT not reactive” and is three times as frequent among our donors as the seroreactive group identified by CMT only. If fresh or unsufficiently treated cases of syphilis can be excluded, these results indicate that the individual has had a syphilis sometimes in the past. Application of the TPHA test in blood donor care reduces the risks of blood transfusion and improves the control of venereal diseases as required by law.
