Notes: 6.5% Si steel is widely known as an excellent soft magnetic material because its magnetostriction is nearly zero. The ac magnetic properties and magnetostriction of 6.5% Si steel sheet were evaluated and compared with those of conventional 3% Si steel sheet. From these data, this sheet is considered to be one of the best core materials available for audio frequency transformers. Toroidal and laminated-type transformers were made from both 6.5% steel sheet and grain-oriented Si steel sheet and the iron losses and noise were investigated. The results indicate that it is possible to operate at high induction, which suggests that this size of a transformer can be reduced by using 6.5% Si steel sheet.

Notes: The electronic states of a range of Fe-Si alloys were investigated by x-ray and ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy. Previous work has shown that in Fe-Si alloys, the 6.5-wt % Si-Fe alloy has the optimum soft magnetic properties because of its zero magnetostriction. The binding energy (BE) of the Fe 2p, Fe 3s, Fe 3p, and Si 2p levels and the Fe 3d valence-band structures of Fe-Si alloys were measured over the range from 0 to 7 wt % Si. The BE of the Fe 3s and Fe 3p levels and the Fe 3d valence band of Fe-Si alloys showed small shifts of the peaks toward higher BEs than pure Fe. These peak shifts are related to the change in density of Fe 3d states with the addition of Si: the decrease in the density of states near the Fermi energy, the decrease in the energy difference between the majority and minority spin bands, and the increase in the number of electrons with minority spin. The results of the photoelectron spectroscopic analyses agree with the observed decrease in saturation magnetization from 2.15 T for pure Fe to 1.80 T for 6.5-wt % Si-Fe.

Notes: A large-diameter uniform plasma is produced by electron cyclotron resonance heating with a slotted Lisitano coil of 9 cm in diameter by locating the resonance apart from the Lisitano coil. Although the plasma production with a Lisitano coil has been performed extensively by placing the resonance near the Lisitano coil, the influence of the resonance location has not received as much attention. When the resonance is located further than 8 cm from the Lisitano coil, the uniform plasma of ∼40 cm in diameter at densities of ∼1.2×1011 cm−3 is produced over the vacuum chamber with an inner radius of 46 cm. The microwave is propagated in the whole space between the resonance and the Lisitano coil, and spatial electric-field distributions of the microwave play an important role on forming the radially uniform plasma.

Notes: Abstract To evaluate the ability of arterial ketone body ratio (AKBR; acetoacetate/3-hydroxybutyrate) to predict graft prognosis after liver transplantation, the diagnostic value as a predictive index was compared between AKBR and conventional liver function tests using receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis. The ROC curves were determined for AKBR, GOT, GPT, total bilirubin, serum lactate level, and prothrombin time, all of which were measured on the 1st and 2nd postoperative days in 88 cases of liver transplantation. Comparisons of the areas under the ROC curves between AKBR and other tests revealed the significant superiority of AKBR to other tests in predicting graft death within 1 month after transplantation. The present study suggests that AKBR can be used as an accurate index to predict graft prognosis after liver transplantation.

Notes: Abstract This study investigated whether prostaglandin E1 (PGE1) could reduce hepatic injury to the liver graft caused by harvesting and 24-h preservation in University of Wisconsin (UW) solution in a canine model. The PGE1-treated group was intravenously administered 0.5 μg/kg per minute of PGE1 for 30 min before harvesting, as well as a concentration of 1 mg/l PGE1 in the washout and UW solutions. In both the PGE1-treated and the control group, all recipients survived for 1 week or more after transplantation. Arterial ketone body ratio (AKBR) remained over 1.0 in the early postoperative period. The PGE1 group showed significant reductions in guanase, GOT, and LDH during the early postoperative period compared to the untreated control group. Histological examination disclosed partial mitochondrial swelling, hepatocyte vacuolation, and necrosis in the control group, while such abnormalities were rarely seen in the PGE1 group. These results suggest that PGE1 can effectively reduce hepatic injury to liver grafts preserved in UW solution prior to transplantation.

Notes: Abstract The temperature dependence of the amount of martensitic transformation in Cu-1.5-mass% Fe has been examined by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and magnetic measurements. It was found that the temperature dependence of the amount of deformation-induced martensite for smaller (〈 160 nm) Fe particles exhibits a maximum at a transition temperature. The transition temperature increases as the mean transformable-particle size increases. The evolution of the transition has been explained by incorporating the effect of paramagnetic to anti-ferromagnetic transitions in the γ-phase into thermodynamic considerations.

Notes: Abstract The proton irradiation control system was developed for cancer radiotherapy at the Proton Medical Research Center, with the extension of a beam line connected to a synchrotron at the High Energy Physics Laboratory. The initial energy of the 500 MeV proton beam supplied by the accelerator is degraded down to 243 MeV after passing through a graphited rod. In the control system, a proton beam is scattered to form a large field, its Bragg peak width is spread out, and its energy is degraded to the optimum value with a range covering tumour depth. The characteristics of the devices required for these procedures have been investigated from the viewpoint of the relationship between dose rate and field flatness, taking the setting-up geometry of these devices into consideration.
