Notes: Summary Chlamydocin, a potent cytostatic agent against cultured mammalian cells, and HC-toxin, a host-specific phytotoxin, are cyclic tetrapeptides containing the same epoxide α-amino acid. We show here that these compounds have reciprocal biological activity; HC-toxin is cytostatic against cultured mastocytoma cells, and chlamydocin has host-specific toxin activity against maize. Chlamydocin and another related cyclic peptide, Cyl-2, are less host-specific than HC-toxin because maize tolerant to HC-toxin is more sensitive to chlamydocin and Cyl-2.

Notes: Both amyloses and amylopectins from sago starches with low (280 BU, low-v) and high (735 BU, high-v) viscosities on amylography differed in molecular structures. The low-v amylopectin (average chain length, c.I., 22) was a smaller molecule with a slightly higher amount of long chains than the high-v amylopectin (c.I., 22). The number-and weight-average degrees of polymerization of the low-v amylose were 2490 and 5090, respectively, which were half those of the high-v amylose. The low-v amylose had a lower molar fraction of branched molecules with a shorter inner chain length than the high-v amylose, but both branched molecules had a similar number (17–19) of chains on the average. Both starch granules had the same crystalline type (Ca) and amylose content (24%).

Notes: We report the first demonstration of an InGaAs/InP multiple quantum well Fabry–Perot étalon modulator. The obtained on-off contrast is 5:1 at −16 V applied voltage for 1540 nm wavelength light. The absorption coefficient of the multiple quantum well around 1540 nm increases from 1000 to 6300 cm−1 as the applied voltage increases from 0 to −16 V, and the relative refractive index change is up to −0.9%.

Notes: Abstract: Morphological and biochemical studies were performed on the CNS of neurologically affected NCTR Balb/C mouse. Histological and electron microscopic techniques demonstrated severe myelin deficiency in the affected brains. Neither the presence of lipid-containing macrophages nor reactive gliosis was apparent. Analysis of myelin-associated lipids and proteins revealed prominent depletion of galactocerebroside, sulfatide, and proteolipid proteins. In contrast to the scarcity of myelin specific constituents a marked accumulation of GM2 and GM3 gangliosides and several neutral glycolipids, i.e., glucocerebroside, lactosylceramide, gangliotriaosylceramide, and gangliotetraosylceramide were found in affected CNS. These abnormalities were already apparent in 12-day-old pups as well as in 65-day-old mice. A significant deficit in the proportion of long-chain fatty acids (C24), notable in both normal and α-hydroxy acids of cerebrosides from affected white matter, was measured. The lack of reactive gliosis, the observed depletion of galactocerebroside and sulfatide at the early age of 12 days, and the relative decrease in long-chain fatty acids in affected CNS strongly suggest a defect in myelinogenesis in this mutant rather than a secondary process of myelin breakdown.

Notes: Aims:  To determine the expression of Mcl-1 in testicular germ cell tumours in order to clarify the role of this anti-apoptotic factor in these tumours. Various members of the Bcl-2 family have been implicated in the apoptotic mechanisms regulating germ cell apoptosis. Mcl-1 is an anti-apoptotic Bcl-2 family member and has recently been reported to be related to the progression of malignancy; however, the involvement of Mcl-1 in the development of germ cell tumours is still unknown. Methods and results:  Mcl-1 expression in testicular germ cell tumours was investigated by immunohistochemistry and reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). By immunohistochemistry, overexpression of Mcl-1 was present in all germ cell tumours that were studied, including embryonal carcinoma and yolk sac tumour, as well as choriocarcinoma and teratoma. In teratomas, Mcl-1 was widely distributed in the epithelial, myogenic, neural and mesenchymal components. RT-PCR analysis after microdissection revealed high levels of Mcl-1 mRNA in all tumour variants compared with non-neoplastic germ cells. Conclusion:  Overexpression of anti-apoptotic Mcl-1 may function to enhance the viability of testicular germ cells, thereby leading to tumorigenesis.

Notes: A class of light-cone integrals typical to one-loop calculations in the two-component formalism is considered. For the particular cases considered, convergence is verified though the results cannot be expressed as a finite sum of elementary functions.

Notes: LO phonon-overdamped plasmon coupled modes in n-type epitaxial films of β-SiC have been measured in the carrier concentration range from 6.9×1016 to 2×1018 cm−3. The carrier concentrations and damping constants are determined by line-shape fitting of the coupled modes and compared with the values derived from Hall measurements. The concentrations obtained from the two methods agree fairly well. The Faust–Henry coefficient determined from the fitting is 0.35. The line-shape analysis of the coupled mode has shown that the dominant scattering mechanisms in β-SiC are deformation-potential and electro-optic mechanisms.

Notes: An histopathological, ultrastructural and immunohistochemical study of localized amyloidosis in the floor of mouth of a 58-year-old male in good health is reported. The lesion was composed of nodular deposits of amyloid surrounded by libroblastic or histiocytic cells, and metaplastic ossification was seen in some deposits. Ultrastructural findings disclosed typical amyloid fibrils with felt-like structure. Closely connected with the amyloid deposits were cells with active histiocytic or fibroblastic appearance. Their cytoplasm contained amyloid fibrils. At the outermost area of the amyloid deposits, bundles of amyloid fibrils projected from these cells into amyloid deposits. Amyloid protein of the present case did not react to any antisera using anti-AA, anti-A lambda, anti-A kappa and anti-prealbumin antisera. It can be assumed that histiocytes or fibroblasts play an important role in local amyloid formation, however, the nature of amyloid fibril protein in the present case is unknown.

Notes: An exceedingly rare case of ameloblastoma. plexiform type, which contained numerous hyaline bodies was reported. Hyaline bodies occurred within the parenchyma, and showed similar histochemical reactions to those of hyaline bodies in odontogenic cysts. Ultrastructurally, hyaline bodies found in the present case of ameloblastoma were composed of a peripheral electron-dense area and central electron-lucent area. Well-developed endoplasmic reticulum containing electron-lucent and homogeneous substance were seen in the epithelial cells adjacent to hyaline bodies. Furthermore, electron-dense spherical granules, with or without limiting membrane, were scattered in the cytoplasm of epithelial cells. It is thought that hyaline bodies in the present case of ameloblastoma are particular products formed by odontogenic epithelial cells.
