Notes: Summary The main neurovascular structures related to the medial wall of the orbit were studied in 70 orbits after injection of the orbital arterial bed with latex dye. The position, anatomical relations and variations of the ophthalmic and ethmoidal arteries and trochlear and nasociliary nerves are described. Some differences were noted in comparison to classical anatomical descriptions, notably regarding the position of the ophthalmic artery which was commonly found to lie medial to the obliquus superior muscle distal to the point where it crosses under the muscle. An important surgical landmark, the lateral orifice of the anterior ethmoidal canal which lodges the anterior ethmoidal artery, was noted and its position described.

Notes: Abstract We recently reported that M-1 mouse cortical collecting duct cells show nonselective cation (NSC) channel activity (Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. USA 89:10262–10266, 1992). In this study, we further characterize the M-1 NSC channel using single-channel current recordings in excised inside-out patches. The M-1 NSC channel does not discriminate between Na+, K+, Rb+, Cs+, and Li+. It has a linear I-V relation with a conductance of 22.7±0.5 pS (n=78) at room temperature. The Pcation/ Panion ratio is about 60 and there is no measurable conductance for NMDG, Ca2+, Ba2+, and Mn2+. Cytoplasmic calcium activates the M-1 NSC channel at a threshold of 10−6 m and depolarization increases channel activity (NP o ). Cytoplasmic application of adenine nucleotides inhibits the M-1 NSC channel. At doses of 10−4 m and 10−3 m, ATP reduces NP o by 23% and 69%, respectively. Furthermore, since ADP (10−3 m) reduces NP o by 93%, the inhibitory effect of adenine nucleotides is not dependent on the presence of a γ-phosphoryl group and therefore does not involve protein phosphorylation. The channel is not significantly affected by 8-Br-cGMP (10−4 m) or by cGMP-dependent protein kinase (10−7 m) in the presence of 8-Br-cGMP (10−5 m) and ATP (10−4 m). The NSC channel is not sensitive to amiloride (10−4 m cytoplasmic and/or extracellular) but flufenamic acid (10−4 m) produces a voltage-dependent block, reducing NP o by 35% at depolarizing voltages and by 80% at hyperpolarizing voltages. We conclude that the NSC channel of M-1 mouse cortical collecting duct cells belongs to an emerging family of calcium-activated and nucleotide-sensitive nonselective cation channels. It does not contribute to amiloride-sensitive sodium absorption and is unlikely to be a major route for calcium entry. The channel is normally quiescent but may be activated under special physiological conditions, e.g., during volume regulation.

Notes: Abstract An analysis is made of the hydrodynamic characteristics of the propagation of thermal polymerization waves in liquid media without hardening of the final polymer product. The process is described mathematically using a system of equations for the dynamics and the heat and mass transfer in a reacting liquid medium, written in the Boussinesq approximation and assuming the simplest overall polymerization reaction.

Notes: Two sets of accessions were sampled, tram a natural population of Hordeum spontaneum at Shelomi, Israel, viz.: 100 ears along a transect at intervals of 1—1.5 m and 10 ring clusters of 10 ears each, circling each 10th plant of the transect. Single ear progenies were tested for banding patterns of 5 allozyme loci; in addition, hordein sanding; and field reaction against powdery mildew has been determined. 56 allozyme genotypes and 13 hordein patterns were determined. Most of the progenies showed susceptible to moderately susceptible infection types and high frequencies of low infection grade (slow mildewing). For all characters spatial grouping was found in plants derived from neighbouring transect parents. This was even more pronounced in the ring clusters. Reactions to mildew infection appeared to be closely correlated with hordein banding. In addition, accessions showing hypersensitive reactions carried excessive frequencies of a certain allele of the Est-1 locus.

Notes: Coupling efficiency of infrared radiation to electron intersubband transition in quantum well infrared photodetector by a two-dimensional (2D) grooved grating is examined. A resonant enhancement of the coupling efficiency at a certain optimal groove depth is predicted and confirmed experimentally. It is argued that a detector with a properly designed ordered cross grating performs better than a detector with optimized 2D random grating. In a detector with ordered grating a quantum efficiency of 75% is obtained with a doping level of only 3.5×1017 cm−3 in each quantum well and dark current density of 0.34 mA/cm2 at 78 K. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract The hydrodynamic stability of the steady spherical front of a reaction accompanied by a strong increase in viscosity taking place in a radial, centrally symmetric flow of condensed reaction medium is considered. The flow is assumed to be bounded by two permeable concentric spherical surfaces. The stability is investigated in the linear approximation with respect to small perturbations. A relation is obtained for the dependence of the perturbation growth rate on the parameters of the problem: the viscosity ratio of the medium at the front, the ratio of the boundary surface radii to the radius of the front, and the dimensionless hydrodynamic resistances of the boundary surfaces. It is shown that the front is stable over almost the entire physical region of variation of the parameters and that instability occurs only in the case of a low hydrodynamic resistance of the outer boundary surface as the front approaches.

Notes: Abstract A patient with cyclic neutropenia suffered full-thickness loss of her right abdominal wall and thigh muscles from clostridial myonecrosis. No port of entry was definitely identified. The sepsis and myonecrotic process were controlled by resuscitative measures, extensive multisession debribement, and hyperbaric treatment.

Notes: Abstract A finite element solution is given for the coupled heat and mass transfer taking place when a vapour with considerable heat of absorption is absorbed into a laminar film flow. Convection and diffusion parallel and perpendicular to the direction of flow are taken into account. Temperature and mass fraction profiles across the film are given as well as results in film flow direction for several values of the Peclet number. Comparison with a solution based on one-dimensional flow and diffusion perpendicular to the flow, shows that deviations from this case by our two-dimensional solution increase for decreasing Peclet number.

Notes: Abstract The upper-convected Maxwell model of an elastic liquid is solved by means of the finite element method, using a penalty function approach. It is shown that the algorithm produces oscillations in the stresses in the presence of geometrical discontinuities, for increasing Deborah number De. The cause of this problem is explored and an indication of how to solve this problem is given. The complete set of equations appears to be of the mixed hyperbolic-elliptic type.

Notes: Abstract The classical staggered scheme for the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations is generalized from Cartesian grids to general boundary-fitted structured grids. The resulting discretization is coordinate-invariant. The unknowns are the pressure and the contravariant volume flux components. The grid can be strongly nonuniform and nonorthogonal. The smoothness properties of the coordinate mapping are carefully taken into account. As a result, the accuracy on rough grids is found to be at least as good as for typical finite element and nonstaggered finite volume schemes. Extension to compressible flows results in a scheme with Mach-uniform accuracy and efficiency for Mach numbers ranging from M = 0 to M 〉 1. Accurate discretization of two-equation turbulence models is also possible.
