Notes: Summary Ultrastructural studies on the skin of two patients affected by infantile neuroaxonal dystrophy (INAD) were performed to evaluate its diagnostic value and to discuss the etiology of INAD. While the majority of terminal axons around intradermal glands were dystophic consisting of tubulomembranous and tubulovesicular profiles sometimes accompanied by synaptic vesicles, there were only few dystophic axons inside intradermal nerve bundles. These observations suggest that the primary lesion of INAD is located in terminal and presynaptic axons. Therefore, terminal axons have to be investigated when a diagnostic skin biopsy is performed in INAD.

Notes: The CdSxSe1−x microcrystallites contained in colored filter glasses have been considered to be spherical. This letter demonstrates that in fact they are hexagonal columns, implying a wurtzite structure. Microcrystallite grain growth is observed in real time using an electron beam annealing method. Each grain is confirmed by energy dispersive spectrometry to be CdSxSe1−x. The grain size difference produces different optical transmission spectra due to quantum size effects. On the optical transmission spectrum of a sample with grains of 30 A(ring), a new absorption band appears. This band can be explained by size quantization of the valence band.

Notes: 1. The effects of arotinolol on changes in renin release in rat kidney cortical slices in response to isoproterenol (IP) or norepinephrine (NE), were studied in comparison with those of AC-623, a main metabolite of arotinolol, and other typical adrenoceptor antagonists.2. Arotinolol, at concentrations of 10−8 to 10−4 mol/l, inhibited the increasing effect of 10−6 mol/l IP on renin release, in a concentration-dependent manner. Similar results were observed with AC-623, propranolol or labetalol, although the inhibitory potencies of these agents were considerably lower than that of arotinolol.3. The blocking effect of arotinolol on the 10−5 mol/l NE-induced decrease in renin release was much less potent than seen with other α-adrenoceptor blocking agents such as prazosin, phenoxybenzamine and labetalol.4. These data suggest that the potent blocking effects of arotinolol and its metabolite on the increased renin release in response to β-adrenoceptor stimulation may contribute to the antihypertensive effect of this agent.

Notes: An indirect immunoperoxidase method was used to study the expression of tissue polypeptide antigen (TPA) and cancer antigen 125 (CA 125) in 47 benign and malignant ovarian tumours. Tissue polypeptide antigen and CA 125 antigen were expressed respectively in 22 (73%) and 16 (53%) of the 30 adenocarcinomas and in five (29%) and four (23%) of the 17 benign tumours. Co-expression of TPA and CA 125 antigen occurred in 12 (40%) malignant and four (23%) benign tumours. Ultrastructurally, TPA and CA 125 antigens were located at the cell surface and microvillous surfaces.Evaluation of combined TPA and CA 125 antigen results revealed a remarkable improvement in the positivity rate and a significant decrease (P〈0.05) in the negativity rate of ovarian carcinomas as compared with the result of each one separately. These findings provide complementary evidence for the previous results on the plasma levels of TPA and CA 125 antigen and suggest that specific combinations of tumour markers may be more effective for the diagnosis and monitoring of ovarian carcinomas, than the use of any single marker.

Notes: Variations in the number of silver-stained nucleolar organizer region-associated proteins (AgNORs) were studied in paraffin sections of 42 benign prostatic lesions, comprising four cases of granulomatous prostatitis, five of squamous or transitional metaplasia, eight of atypical and 25 of regular hyperplasia, and 37 of prostatic adenocarcinoma, with their metastases. There was a significant difference between the mean AgNOR counts of the benign and malignant prostatic lesions (1.58±0.26 v. 4.34±1.53; P〈0.01). The mean AgNOR counts significantly increased with increasing Gleason's grade (P〈0.01) and clinical stage (P〈0.05) of the tumours. AgNOR counting may contribute to the conventional diagnostic and prognostic indices of cancer of the prostate.

Notes: The microscopic structure and formation processes of porous Si layers (PSLs) have been studied by infrared absorption and Raman scattering. How the concentration of HF used during formation affects the vibrational spectra of PSLs has been examined. The IR spectra of as-anodized PSL in the Si-Hx vibration region are quite similar to those of Si(111) or (100) surfaces etched in HF solutions of pH∼2. The amount of dihydrogen adsorbed on the surface increases for lower HF concentrations relative to that of monohydrogen. Fluorine and oxygen are found on PSLs anodized for a long period. The size of the Si particle (or column) is a few nanometers for samples anodized with the solution of HF:H2O=1:1 as estimated from Raman data, and it decreases with a decrease in the HF concentration. No Si nanostructures are detected in the Raman data for the case of HF:H2O:ethanol=1:1:8. The HF concentration dependence of the IR spectra is explained in terms of the change in the size of columns or particles in the PSL. The Si—Si back bond for the surface Si atom terminated by dihydrogen is more stable against oxidation in air than the bond for the atom terminated by monohydrogen. The HF concentration dependence of the electrochemical process is discussed in connection with the relative contribution of electropolishing and pore formation processes. The relation between the photoluminescence intensity and the surface structure is also discussed.

Notes: Si and Zn are essentially mutually insoluble. We were able to detect Zn drops at a Si surface by using the refracted x-ray fluorescence method when the Si wafer was implanted with Zn ions at 50 keV up to doses of 1 × 1016 cm−2. The presence of the Zn drops at the Si surface was confirmed both by measuring surface roughness and Rutherford-backscattering spectroscopy spectra.

Notes: Cross sections of the patterns fabricated in (100) GaAs by 100-keV gallium focused ion beam have been studied using a scanning electron microscope (SEM). The probe size of the ion beam is 0.1–0.15 μm at the current of 100 pA. The etched depth becomes saturated at the high dose region (about 5.0×10−6 C/cm) because of the redeposition effect. The pattern profile becomes asymmetric if it is made up of several adjacent lines perpendicular to the beam scanning direction due to the redeposition effect and the increase of sputtering yield for each scan, which is caused by the change of ion beam incident angle. These effects can be eliminated by the use of multiwriting method.

Notes: It is demonstrated for the first time that photodarkening in colored filter glasses is associated with apparent growth of CdSxSe1−x microcrystallites. This is thought to be due to the attraction of impurity ions around the microcrystallites. Both a Q-switched Nd3+:YAG laser and a hybrid mode-locked dye laser are used as the light sources. Microcrystallite growth is directly observed by transmission electron microscopy and by field-emission scanning electron microscopy. Growth is also inferred from local changes in color and measured absorption spectra.
