Anti-ulcer and sedative effects of tranquillosedatives viz. benzodiazepines (diazepam, oxazepam and nitrazepam), barbiturate (phenobarbitone), phenothiazines (chlorpromazine, trifluoperazine and thioridazine) and butyrophenone (haloperidol) were compared in albino rats.2. Ulceration of the glandular stomach was induced by 2 h restraint at 4°C. Sedation was measured using the rotarod test.3. These tranquillosedatives showed dose dependent anti-ulcer and sedative effects. The relative potency and therapeutic index (ratio between rotarod ED50 and anti-ulcer ED50) of each drug were determined. Diazepam showed the highest therapeutic index (1.88).4. Diazepam significantly reduced the volume of gastric secretion, raised its pH and prevented the gastric ulcer formation in pylorus ligated rats but failed to prevent the acute duodenal ulceration induced by intramuscular injection of histamine or carbachol in guinea-pigs and rats, respectively.5. These observations suggest that benzodiazepines (diazepam) are more suitable anti-ulcer agents compared to barbiturate, phenothiazines and butyrophenone. The anti-ulcer effect of diazepam is possibly due to a combination of sedative, anti-anxiety and antisecretory actions.

    Notes: 1. The role of putative neurotransmitters was investigated in morphine-induced Straub reaction (SR) in albino mice.2. Apomorphine (15 mg/kg) was also effective in inducing SR. However, in a smaller dose (0.2 mg/kg) it blocked SR induced by morphine.3. Morphine-induced SR was potentiated by tranylcypromine, reserpine (acute effect), imipramine and l-dopa and blocked by reserpine (chronic effect), α-methyldopa, pimozide, chlorpromazine, haloperidol and metoclopramide. Prazosin and clonidine partially blocked morphine SR in high doses.4. Propranolol, yohimbine, cyproheptadine and atropine were ineffective in blocking morphine SR.5. The results indicate that morphine SR is mediated through release of DA in the CNS which excites central D2 receptors. Activation of central α1-adrenoceptors might also play a minor role.

    Notes: A mathematical model is developed for trap-modulated, steady-state, hopping transport of space-charge-limited carriers, injected into linear low-density polyethylene, doped with oxidized low-density polyethylene. Poole field lowering of the trap depth is also included. The hopping sites are carbonyl groups provided by the dopant, lying in the amorphous regions of the sample. We assume band-tail or band conduction, i.e., little or no energy barrier to transport within the crystalline regions, and deep traps located at the crystalline-amorphous matrix boundaries. Two adjustable parameters, the hopping and trap site separations, are used to give good agreement with the experimental current-applied field characteristics in the temperature range 50–85 °C for fields less than 4×105 V/cm, and hopping site concentrations of 2×1019/cm3 and 4×1019/cm3. For the latter concentration, (corresponding to a separation of about 28 A(ring)) at temperatures (35–60 °C) that are too low to thermally detrap injected carriers (that are trapped before reaching the steady state), conduction takes place by hopping in the amorphous regions over an energy barrier of 0.30 eV. At elevated temperatures (60–85 °C), detrapping contributes to the steady-state current. The activation energy in this latter temperature range is 1.17 eV (at 2×105 V/cm). The final current, field, and temperature equation shows that the hopping and trap energies are additive on a semilog plot of I/T vs 1/T. Thus, the field-lowered trap depth is 0.87 eV. This result agrees well with a previously determined crystalline-amorphous trap depth in virgin linear low-density polyethylene.

    Notes: Summary An assay system for the measurement of the rate of Calcium Oxalate Monohydrate (COM) seed crystal growth in a metastable solution of calcium chloride and sodium oxalate containing traces of 14C-oxalic acid was used to assess the inhibitory activity of pyrophosphate (10−5 M-10−4 M), citrate (10−4 M-10−3 M) and urines of normal and pyridoxine deficient rats. Both pyrophosphate and citrate were strong inhibitors of COM crystal growth and caused a 50% decrease in crystal growth rate at 1.50×10−5 M and 2.85×10−4 M respectively. Normal rat urine strongly inhibited the COM crystal growth, while pyridoxine deficient animals showed a significant (p〈 0.01) decrease in mean inhibitory activity as compared to pair-fed controls. A lowered urinary inhibitory potential accompanied with hyperoxaluria and hypercalciuria, which is known to be associated with pyridoxine deficiency, may be a contributory risk of calcium oxalate crystallization and stone formation.

    Notes: Abstract An analytical study is performed to examine the heat transfer characteristics on the flow of a viscous, incompressible rarefied gas in a parallel plate channel under the action of transverse magnetic field when (i) suction velocity normal to the plate is constant, (ii) the second plate oscillates in time about a constant non-zero mean, (iii) fluid is subjected to a constant heat source of absorption type. Apprximate solutions for velocity, temperature, phase, and amplitude of skin-friction and rate of heat transfer are evaluated. Mean temperature profiles, phase and amplitude of rate of heat transfer at both plates are discussed graphically followed by a quantitative discussion. Mean rate of heat transfer is tabulated in Table I.
