    Notes: Summary The effect of total asphyxia on dendritic development of the pyramidal cells in the mouse cerebrum was investigated using the Golgi-Cox method. Although neonatal asphyxia did not alter the number of basal dendrites arising from the cell bodies, the dendrites in the 20-day-old treated animals were significantly shorter than those in the controls. Even at 60 days, the number of longer dendrites in the treated mice was significantly less than that in the controls.

    Notes: Summary Changes occurring in serotonin neurons during hyperthermia-induced convulsions were examined by means of a modified immunohistochemical method. All mice (8–12 weeks of age) exposed to the temperature of 50°C had convulsions, showing a generalized tonic and/or clonic pattern. Immediately after the convulsions, the animals were perfused transcardially with a fixative. A significant reduction in serotonin immunoreactivity was observed in the neostratum (caudate-putamen complex) of the mice which had hyperthermia-induced seizures, while the serotonin immunoreactivity remained unchanged in the neocortex and paleostriatum. These results suggest that serotonin may be an important mediator in the mechanism of hyperthermia-induced convulsions or that the susceptibility of serotonin neurons to a convulsive state is greatest in the neostriatum.

    Notes: Summary Changes occurring in serotonin neurons during hyperthermia and hyperthermia-induced convulsions were examined by quantiative immunohistochemistry. A marked increase in serotonin immunoreactivity was observed at the rostral and intermediate levels of the neostriatum of mice kept at high temperatures with no convulsions, and a significant reduction in serotonin immunoreactivity was verified throughout the neostiatum of mice which had hyperthermia-induced seizures. These results suggest that serotonin neurons change significantly during thermal stress and seizures, and that regional analysis is essential for an understanding of the role of serotonin neurons.

    Notes: Summary The current-voltage curve of theChara membrane was obtained by applying a slow ramp de- and hyperpolarization by use of voltage clamp. By inhibiting the electrogenic pump with 50μm DCCD (dicyclohexylcarbodiimide), theI–V curve approached a steady state within 100 min, which gave thei d -V curve of the passive diffusion channel. Thei p -V curve of the electrogenic pump channel was obtained by subtracting the latter from the former. With the increase of external pH, thei d -V curve showed only a slight change, while thei p -V curve of the pump channel showed almost a parallel shift, in the hyperpolarizing direction, along the voltage axis in the pH range between 6.5 and 7.5. The sigmoidali p -V curve in this pH range could be simulated satisfactorily with the five-state model reported previously (U. Kishimoto, N. Kami-ike, Y. Takeuchi & T. Ohkawa,J. Membrane Biol. 80:175–183, 1984) as well as with a lumped two-state model presented in this report. The analysis based on these models suggests that the electrogenic pump of theChara membrane is mainly a 2H+/1ATP pump. The forward rate constant in the voltage-dependent step increased with the increase of external pH, while the backward one decreased. On the other hand, the forward rate constant in the voltage-independent step remained almost unchanged with the increase of external pH, while the backward one increased markedly. The pump conductance at the resting membrane potential showed either a slight increase or a decrease with the increase of external pH, depending on the sample. Nevertheless, the pump current showed generally a slight increase with the increase of external pH.

    Notes: Abstract We conducted a prospective, randomized, controlled trial comparing the efficacy of two doses of a reconstituted bovine surfactant (Surfactant TA) in premature infants requiring mechanical ventilation shortly after birth for respiratory distress syndrome. Forty-six infants weighing 1000–1499 g were randomized into two groups: a low-dose group (23 infants given a single dose of 60 mg surfactant lipid/kg) and a high-dose group (23 infants given a single dose of 120 mg/kg). The mean (SD) age at which surfactant was given was 5.5 (±1.2) h in the low-dose group and 6.0 (±1.5) h in the high dose group. Both treatments improved oxygenation (increased arterial-alvcolar PO2 ratio) with decreased mean airway pressure, the high-dose surfactant having a more beneficial effect in prolonging the response. Infants in the high-dose group had significantly less (P〈0.05) incidence of both intraventricular haemorrhage and bronchopulmonary dysplasia. This prospective trial documents that a greater benefit can be obtained by increasing the dose of surfactant (120 mg/kg) beyond 60 mg/kg in the treatment of premature infants with severe respiratory distress syndrome (RDS).

We report art allergic contact dermatitis due ID hexamethylenetetramine. With a positive patch test reaction to hexamethy-lenetetramine (1% pet.) but not to formaldehyde (2% aq.). We concluded that this case was an allergic contact dermatitis from hexamethylenetetramine itself.

    Notes: Depth profiles and annealing behaviors of hydrogen implanted into titanium samples at an energy of 10 keV per nucleon were measured in the implantation temperature and fluence ranges of 77–400 K and of 6.3×1016–3.3×1018 H/cm2, respectively. Trapping enthalpies are deduced from the annealing curves. It was found that the trapping mechanism of hydrogen implanted into Ti depends on both the temperature and the fluence at the implantation. When implanted at a temperature sufficiently higher than 273 K, hydrogen moves from the surface layer to an underlying bulk and precipitates as hydride irrespective of fluence. On the other hand, at a temperature around or below 273 K, the implanted hydrogen atoms are trapped by the vacancies at a low concentration of hydrogen. However, hydride formation is realized where the local atomic ratio of H/Ti becomes close to the stoichiometric value of TiH2.

    Notes: We immunohistochemically analyzed the immunological background of the pathogenesis of oral lichen planus (OLP). Abundant lymphocytes infiltrated OLP mucosal lesions, particularly in satellite cell necrosis (SCN) regions, and cytotoxic/suppressor T lymphocytes were predominant in seven of 10 OLP cases. Some carried IL-2 receptors, particularly in SCN. Keratinocytes of the mucosal lesions expressed both HLA-ABC and HLA-DR antigens. This suggests that activated cytotoxic/suppressor T lymphocytes may play a major role in cytotoxity to keratinocytes as effector cells in OLP. OKM1-, OKM5+, HLA-DR+ and IL-1+ cells, vascular endothelial cells and clusters of spindle-shaped or oval cells, which had the same surface characteristics as a monocyte macrophage subset, were abundant and, together with migrating lymphocytes, might play a role in the immune response in mucosal lesions of OLP.
