    Notes: Summary Serum factors may be responsible for reduced host-anti-tumor defence. Although there is still confusion about their origin, attempts have been made to immobilize serum components by Protein A columns as a therapeutic modality. In our study the in vitro adsorption of 90% of the IgG from cancer sera on “immobilized protein A” did not influence the inhibitory serum activity as measured in a mixed lymphocyte culture. Therefore, IgG or immune complexes do not seem to be the suppressive serum factor in patients with advanced colorectal carcinoma. There is evidence for leakage of small amounts of protein A from the columns which have immunostimulatory activity. Perhaps this may explain necrosis after a therapeutic immunoadsorption.

    Notes: Summary Serum α-tocopherol and retinol concentrations were followed in four heterozygous adults and one homozygous child with familial hypercholesterolemia being treated by regular low-density lipoprotein (LDL) apheresis. Approximately 50% of plasma α-tocopherol was eliminated during a single apheresis procedure in the heterozygous adults, while a complete elimination of this vitamin along with LDLs was observed in the homozygous child. Absolute losses of α-tocopherol amounted to 13.4–22.5 mg/apheresis and are equivalent to the recommended dietary intake for 1.5 to 2 days. Despite these losses, no changes were observed either in serum α-tocopherol levels or in the ratio of α-tocopherol/total serum lipids after 12 months regular apheresis treatment. Serum retinol concentrations only showed a small decrease on apheresis, there being apparently no specific elimination of this vitamin. The absolute losses ranged from 42–422 µg/apheresis and were, therefore, much lower than the recommended dietary intake of the equivalent of 1500 µg retinol/day. It is concluded that no extra supplementation of these vitamins is required during LDL-apheresis therapy, although it may be advisable to monitor vitamin E status in patients on long-term, intensive therapy.

    Abstract: Резюме Приводятся результаты исследования влияния Ar+-бомбаровки в процессе утончения кристаллов GaAs, имплантированных Si+. Используя трансмиссионную электронную микроскопию высокого разрешения, оцениваются эффекты, связанные с разупорядочением слоев при Ar+-бомбардировке.
    Notes: Summary The results obtained by cross-sectional technique applied to Si+-implanted GaAs crystals, thinned by Ar+-milling, are presented. The effects of the disordered layers produced by Ar+-milling have been estimated through high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM).

    Notes: An indexing program, TREOR, mainly based on trial-and-error methods is described. The program contains separate routines for cubic, tetragonal, hexagonal, orthorhombic, monoclinic and triclinic symmetries. Ten years usage has been analysed to improve the original program. For monoclinic indexing a specific short-axis test has been developed. The over-all success rate of the program has been found to be better than 90%, and considerably more for orthorhombic and higher symmetries.

Nach autologer Replantation läßt sich Milzgewebe szintigraphisch nachweisen. z. Bei der traumatischen Milzruptur ist die Splenosisincidenz sehr hoch. 3. Replantiertes Milzgewebe und Splenosis gewährleisten eine ausreichende Clearancefunktion. 4. Durch den Wegfall der Speicherfunktion der Milz erklärt sich eine Erhöhung der B-Lymphocyten und T-Suppressorzellen im peripheren Blut. 5. Die Replantation von Milzgewebe ist eine Alternative zur Milzerhaltung bei schweren Milzverletzungen.
    Notes: Summary A follow-up examination was performed on 41 patients who had had a traumatic rupture of the spleen (autologous replantation,n = 20; splenectomy,n = 21). In all replantation cases spleen tissue was demonstrated scintigraphically. After traumatic ruptures of the spleen, the incidence of splenosis was very high. There was good clearance function in all replantation and splenosis cases. The lack of the spleen's storage function is responsible for elevated B-lymphocyte and T-suppressor-cell levels in peripheral blood. In severe traumatic ruptures, the replantation of splenic tissue is an alternative procedure for preserving the spleen.

    Notes: Abstract Cross-sectional high resolution transmission electron microscopy has been used to obtain direct information on the in-depth radiation damage distribution of weakly damaged GaAs by Si-ion implantation. A comparison is made between the experimental data and the calculated (using TRIM computer simulations) deposited energy by nuclear stopping for the same conditions. In particular a diffusion zone, with 200–300 Å width, of high point defect concentration beyond the damage peak is detected. These point defects are interpreted as As interstitials. By direct observation, information concerning the damage- and radiation-enhanced diffusion in implanted III–V compound semiconductors is obtained.

    Notes: Summary Cultures of fetal aoudad sheep kidney (FAK), bovine embryonic lung (BEL), and African green monkey kidney (Vero) cells were compared for differential replication of alcelaphine herpesviruses. Cell-free virus appears more rapidly when infected cells are incubated at 33° C rather than at 37° C. Events in the replication and morphologic development of several alcelaphine herpesvirus isolates have been documented using light and electron microscopy. Techniques for indirect immunofluorescence and serum virus neutralization are described. When virus free of host-cell contaminants is desired for biochemical analysis, virus isolates are initially purified on sucrose gradients and then further purified by density gradient centrifugation in Percoll.
