Notes: In 2 parotid adenolymphomas, the composition of lymphoid stroma was analysed, using Stereologic point-counting methods at the electron microscopic level. In the 2 lesions, the stroma was almost identical with respect to organization and composition. Most areas of the stroma showed accumulation of mixed cell populations. On average, the latter were comprised of 5.1 % fibroblastic/relicular cells, 2.7% macro-phages, 68.9% small and 18.8% medium/large lymphocytes, 0.5% blastforming T-lymphocytes, 2.3% blastforming 13-lymphocylcs, and 1.6% plasma cells. Polymorphonuclear leukocytes and mast cells were extremely rare. Areas corresponding to the mantle zone of lymphoid follicles were found to contain 83.0% small and 15.8% medium/large lymphocytes. The present data seem to be in accordance with the speculation that the lymphoid stroma of adenolymphoma represents an immune reaction.

Notes: Abstract Recently we had the opportunity 10 examine and follow up over a period of 2 years an unusual case of Papillon-Lefèvre syndrome (PLS). A 10 year old boy exhibited all symptoms typical of PLS except periodontitis and premature loss of deciduous teeth. The present report aimed at studying the functional capacity of his neutiophilic granulocytes. It integrates clinical observations, histopathological findings and results of in vitro tests, The bioptic material examined included one gingival biopsy, extracted teeth, suppurative material discharged from periodontal pockets, pus emanating from a mucosal abscess, and peripheral blood leucocytes. The neutrophils were sampled on two separate occasions in two independent laboratories and tested for a variety of functions, i.e. motility, random and directional locomotion (chemotaxis), phagocytosis, membrane potential depolarization, oxygen consumption, NBT reduction, and intracellular killing of bacteria and fungi. Findings and test data indicated that in this case of PLS, neutrophilic granulocytes behaved normally with respect to all these functions including margination in blood vessels, emigration, phagocytosis of a broad range of bacteria, degranulation of lysosomes, and intracellular destruction. The data imply that factors other than neutrophil defects may be responsible for rapidly destructive periodontitis in cases where PLS is not associated with an increased susceptibility to infection.

Notes: Abstract In conventional television systems, picture scanning in vertical and temporal directions is usually very defective with regard to the sampling theorem. In this paper some deficiencies such as aliasing, line-structure distortion, line flickering, and large-area flickering are investigated with regard to their dependence on the inter-lacedpicture-scanning process. The three-dimensional reconstruction filtering of the sampled picture is especially analyzed with respect of the viewer's perception. Furthermore, it will be shown that in connection with a new concept of picture scanning published earlier [1], [2], a flat-field reproduction without any 25/30-Hz flicker can be achieved by vertical filtering only. This is true even though the final reproduction by the monitor is performed with interlace. The vertical filtering can then be optimized in the sense of maximum picture sharpness and resolution with negligible ringing as well. Practical results are given in this paper.

Notes: Abstract A configuration mixing calculation has been performed for Ne20 using basis states which are energetically the lowest lying solutions of the Hartree Fock equations. Very good agreement with the results obtained from an exact shell model diagonalization has been achieved with relatively few basis states for the lower lying states in the eigenvalue spectrum.

Notes: Abstract The electron capture by protons into excitedn=3 states as function of the distance from the surface is calculated in OBK-approximation. The target electrons are treated as free electron gas bounded by a step potential. Electron loss processes are considered by weighting the density matrix with a survival probability for different capture depths. The result is used to determine the Stokes parameters of the emitted light. Comparison is made with polarization measurements of HeI (n=3) states after beam foil excitation.

Notes: Abstract The excited-projectile state density matrix is derived from the impact-parameter version of the Oppenheimer-Brinkman-Kramers approximation for a one electron-capture process from localized target states. The result is used to determine the Stokes parameters of the emitted light. General conditions for the production of atomic orientation are investigated and the connection to a recently published classical model is established. Large values of atomic orientation and alignment are found for capture into a hydrogenic 2p state of the projectile. A simple model for the beam-tilted-foil interaction yields a sinβ dependence of the circular polarization on the tilt angleβ. Model calculations for beam-surface scattering show good agreement with experimental data for the relative Stokes parameters.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary The investigation of the heavy metal concentrations of a sedimentary core from the northern part of the Attersee (Austria) revealed a bipartition of the core: a lower part (below 20 cm depth within the sediment) with generally low metal concentrations and an upper (above 20 cm depth) section, in which Cd, Zn and Pb begin to rise until a 5.6-fold (Cd), 3.1-fold (Zn) and 1.9-fold (Pb) increase is attained in the uppermost 6-4 cm layers within the sediment.210Pb and137Cs dating designate 1870–1880 as the initial stage of heavy metal pollution originating from anthropogenic sources and 1960–65 as the stage of maximum enrichment. The highest metal concentrations are in the same range as concentrations described from sediments from 7 lakes in Upper Bavaria with a similar setting (recreational areas with little or no industry). Domestic sewage and rural runoff in connection with the immission of atmospheric dust enriched in heavy metals which result mainly from coal combustion are believed to be the major metal sources. The overall low P-concentrations in the lake sediments do not vary with depth; they indicate that present oligotrophic conditions of the lake have persisted for centuries.
